I picked this up recently thinking "Yay! Another Neal Stephenson Novel!" My favorite Author! Yay!
...or so I thought. Mr. Stephenson's novels are always technically complex, but are usually written in a whimsical style that keeps you laughing. For some reason, he left that style at home in favor of creating a whole new language of speculative terms that mathematicians growing up in another world would use to refer to mathematical theories that in our world are named after their discoverers. This is the first NS novel that I have to recommend against buying unless you are a die hard NS fan, and have already bought every other NS book. This one just does not rate the quality that all his other fiction rates. Yuck, Yuck, Yuck, Yuck. It's like he finally had a mathgasm, and it's just fugly. |
