McCain gave this huge bit about how we can't cut taxes because we have to sacrifice in war and he didn't feel we'd sacrificed enough.

Hastert told him if he wanted to see sacrifice he should head to the military hospital and see what has been sacrificed.

Did anyone see the interview with John Mc Cain (and Jospeh Biden) on Meet the Press last Sunday btw, with regards to the Iraqi conflict? He spoke about the prison abuse scandal, the need to get the international community involved in order to stabilize and give legitimacy to our efforts there (but doubted that the current administration would do so), and factions and the growing unrest over there. He sounded like he had a very solid grasp on the reality of the mess we've gotten into over over there, and I couldn't help but thinking: Why the hell isn't the Bush administration listening to this guy?

I lean solidly to the left on most issues (social liberal, fiscal moderate), but would have voted McCain in 2000, had he won the nomination because I like his pragmatism. With regard to the tax cut issue cited in the argument, I'd like to ask Mr. Hastert how the closing of VA hospitals due to lack of funding (which is going on right now under the guise of 'restructuring') is going to help out those brave men and women who have sacrificed...

Uh, Crist0, did you miss the part where McCain was a POW for 5 years?

What exactly did Hastert sacrifice? He has no basis to even begin arguing that position. Instead of putting words in *their* - the soldiers - mouths, especially about sacrifice, he should ask them how they feel about it, then ask himself what he has sacrificed.

Anyway, Hastert is definitely an ass and a moron besides.

I first heard about this and was like what the hell was Hastert thinking... But then I find the real context of the interview, without all the crap buildup the reporter felt he had to add:

Reporter: "McCain's observation was never before when we've been at war have we been worrying about cutting taxes and his question was, 'Where's the sacrifice?'"

Hastert responds: ""If you want to see the sacrifice, John McCain ought to visit our young men and women at Walter Reed and Bethesda. There's the sacrifice in this country. We're trying to make sure they have the ability to fight this war, that they have the wherewithal to be able to do it. And, at the same time, we have to react to keep this country strong."

/shrug

I don't see that Hastert was degrading McCain's service.

Hastert could be a jerk, but not without the nudging of some asshat AP reporter trying score with cute journalism.

First of all THIS ISNT OUT OF CONTEXT. Hastert, who got out of military service (ok too fat was a differnt Rep Congressman), decided to lecture McCain on sacrifice. For that, he is Asshat.

Your entire point is a joke.

He didn't get out of service, he was rejected for health reasons. That means he went as far as going in to get the physical, which isn't "getting out" of anything.

Also, people don't get rejected for being fat, do you really think the military doesn't know how to get people into shape? People who are already serving can be discharged for being out of shape and failing their PT tests, but that's hardly the same thing.

He didn't lecture McCain about jack shit. It's not lecturing to respond to an idiotic question like "'Where's the sacrifice?" by pointing to where the sacrifice is. That isn't lecturing, McCain himself knew he had FUCKED UP with what he said and backtracked to make it not about sacrifice in war but about taxes.

It's also funny how he calls it "our" party. His party is on the other side of the aisle, and everyone knows it.

So, the "Asshat Award" goes to you for being a moron and making things up and rewording what people said in an effort to make a republican look bad. A few more "Awards" like this and you'll be well on the way to filling your buddy Michael Moore's shoes.
