The initial epic quests were exactly that; epic. Long and involved, requiring rare drops from rare creatures. They were, and for some, still are, the high point of EQ achievement, diligently camping their solo or single-group mobs, then cultivating friendships and enlisting aid of guild and mercenary for the larger targets.

The addition of the beastlord class, two full expansions after the introduction of the epic, forced EQ developers to create a comparable quest for the class. Whereas the initial epics were well thought out, infused with lore and history (and in the case of mage and shadow knight, outright malice) the beast epic was thrown together in the time it took to ride the elevator from the lobby to the SOE office. The weapons are basically the ranger epics and the quest can be done in a day with one group if all mobs are up.

Facing criticisms from the EQ community on their slack attitude towards new epic quests, game developers put a great deal of effort into creating a unique and challenging quest for the Berserker epic.

The quest begins in Burning Woods. Find a barbarian named Ograff McMangle at loc pos1300, pos 1150.

You say, “Hail, Ograff McMangle.”

Ograff McMangle says, “Hello, veteran of the scars. I can see you’re a proud fighter with fire in your eyes and wrath in your muscles. I’ve been waiting here in this blasted land for a warrior to come along worthy of my tale and my weapon, for you see, I am tired of the wars, and wish to pass on my legacy, return to Halas and there live out my days with a warm fire and a tankard full of ale. Do you think you’re [worthy of my weapon]?”

You say, “I am worthy of your weapon.”

Ograff McMangle says, “Well so you may say, but words are just that and actions are more telling. If you are truly worthy, you will be willing to undertake a dangerous task. Are you willing to [prove yourself]?”

You say, “I will prove myself.”

Ograff McMangle says, “Good enough for me. I can’t remember the quest anyway. Here you go. Have fun with it.”

You have gained experience!
You have received an item!

After handing out the epic, Ograff McMangle despawns and respawns 14 seconds later in central Neriak for no logical reason.

but didn't see anything mentioned about the epic.
