Child 44 by Tom Rob Smith One of my favorite HBO movies was 'Citizen X', about a serial killer in Communist Russia. Because of that, I kept slipping into comparison mode between that movie and this book but they are not the same story, and the book is just as well written as that movie was scripted. This is not a fast paced book; the dreary, fearful, misery-filled day to day lives of the Russian people in the post-war 50's did not lend themselves to a fast, light read. Smith does a great job of capturing the despair and fierce pride of the people of the era, as well as the mindset of those in charge, and the people whose job it was to keeping them in charge. For anyone that enjoys a deductive mind at work, the main character here should be interesting. And, for anyone who only knows America in the 50's via "Leave It To Beaver" and "Father Knows Best", and other television programs and movies this book gives an education to what our opponent in the early Cold War years was experiencing. All in all, a good book. Not a cheerful 'leave ya with a smile on your face' book, but a good book. |
