So, I've recommended the Black Company novels by Glen Cook for a while now, but they've been out of print or hard to find or most likely, found out of order....
Well, no longer, TOR is printing compilations of Black company novels, with the best part being they are in the damned order you should read them. The first time I read them out of order as I could find them. Kinda sucked. Chronicles of the Black Company The Books of the South: Tales of the Black Company Cover the first six books, in the order you should read them. What, you've never heard of the Black Company? I recommend them for the same reason I recommend George Martin: enough with the boy who finds he has a destiny/power that he must train/discover to save the world. The Black Company are competent Mercenaries from the very beginning. They kick ass and take names. And... They get stuck with a contract working for the THE BAD GUYS. Quell the rebellion type stuff. Oh, and if you want to know why five billion rogues in various MMORPGs are all named Raven, this is your Series, though it's not like he's the main character even. With any luck the glittering stone compilation will get made any my Black Company Compilation will be complete. |
