well, i tried putting together this computer i was given, an athalon 1ghz, it required a vid card, ram and a hd, i took those pieces out of my p3 computer and plugged them into the athalon PC and everytime i tried to run the winxp boot program from the cdrom drive but it kept giving me HD detection errors, same thing occured when i attempted to fdisk using a windows 98 boot disk, i was checking the cables connected to my hd and the motherboard and well, the ribbon cable tore like a piece of paper. I got everything out of the motherboard but i have to find a ribbon cable now that fits this perticular motherboard, the IDE cable from the other PCs in my house don't fit. So then i decided to try and hook back up my P3 computer, i connected everything abck together and when i turend on the PC i got a loud beeping, i figured it was the RAM so i turned shit off and moved the RAM chips, then as the cdomputer was booting up i realized that the vid card wasn't fully in, i pushed it in a bit more and then the entire system went dead and now it wont load up anymore, 0 power going to it. In conclusion, i have 0 PCs working now, my current resort is to try and take the power supply from the 1ghz and try and put it into the P3 and see if that will work, cause i know i either blew the power supply or i shortted the motherboard, i'm hoping its the power supply. Going to buy a IDE controller also this weekend and see if i can get the 1ghz working with one. So you all probably wont see me on for a while till i get this shit back together, this is just a quick post i made from work.
PS: yes i know, fuck paragraphs. |

No need to worry Lark ... I am boxing up my TI-99/4A and shipping it out to you today. I am even going to include my "Hunt the Wumpus" and "Tunnels of Doom" cartridges.
Enjoy! /hug Morbok Ogre Warrior |

Back in the days of the 486, motherboard makers were doing some funky IDE cables...but I haven't seen a proprietary IDE cable in 5 years. 1ghz Athlons are only about 3 years old. How does another IDE cable "not fit"?

woot thanx moro! just what i always wanted =p. and the cable "does not fit" because it does just that, not fit. The ide slot in the motherboard is pins on both sides with a slot down the middle for a metal piece to fit in, the rest of the IDE cables i have are all female types, with no metal pieces to fit and the holes being larger, a lot larger, then the pins in the piece in the motherboard.
