agreed. Its good to see someone in this era play the way he has. It's still very weird to hear that he has passed records held by players like Gehrig and Mantle...

The only weird part of that is that it took as long as it did to beat their records. Huge advancements in medicine (arthroscopic or laser surgery, prevalence of MRI machines, Tommy John surgery, etc.), nutrition, personal training, the easing up on the schedule (the seasons used to have on average 40+ double headers per season, now you're lucky if you see one), video analysis as well as field side handheld computers, the Japanese and Hispanic influence to the game (find a MLB team without a Dominican on it now a days, for example) and even the change from ash to maple bats have all changed the landscape so much its a wonder some of the old records have lasted as long as they have. Are there any other professional sports that compare in that regard?

Tennis has quite a few long-standing records, like the grand slam, youngest career grand slam, and most consecutive majors. All the advances in medicine, equipment, etc only matter so much since you're facing off against someone who benefits equally from that stuff.
