I haven't been involved in EQ for a while now (besides playing one Project 1999 for a while). From what I hear it's virtually a F2P already with SOE's new schemes. Still, I might hop in and see if my druid is still alive some time. |

Just cancelled my two accounts on the Fippy progression server when I bought SW:TOR last week.

Its a curious choice. They can't expect to get new players this way - they must assume they can make more money from the existing players through the cash shops?

No. You don't get the bells and whistles for free. Limited AA's and expansion access for Free accounts. The more you pay the more you get, up until normal subscription price. To get people a taste and if they like, they pay full price to continue on to the big game.

Last time I spoke to Wildkarrde he was of the opinion botters were running rampant. Well, now they can do it a lot more cheaply. Macroquest could practically play the game for you back in the day, with the intervening decade of Glide-clone development and MakeABot kits that let you stick a Lua interpreter into basically anything ... what could go wrong.
Still the writing has to have been on the wall for a while. In a day when people expect to get suckered in with endless free promotions, it's little surprise that anything but the newest, shiniest kid on the block can't compete for elusive and fickle subscribers with sticker-shock.
