Good action flick? Anything in it that I could use to talk my wife into going?

So it's based off Firefly? I thought that was just another earth based scifi series, full of mystery and x-files type stuff? I ah, don't have cable, so I don't get the good channels anymore.

It's a great movie and yes its based off of Firefly the Tv series that was cancelled after one season but I hope to god it comes back because it was really good but I love most of Joss Whedon's works.

It has good action scenes... lets just say the girl named River is bread to be a lethal weapon and she kicks some major ass... The humor is great just because its not a abrasive humor its just very suttle... All original Cast is in the Movie from Firefly.. You dont have ot be a fan of Firefly or even know what Firefly is to understand this movie.

And to Answer your question Kanyli.. Just say theres a girl that kicks everyone's ass... Whenever its a girl who is the asskicker it seems to make my girlfriend want to see it more then say when its a guy.

Moglor, you might want to edit your first post a bit.. even if it's really not all that much of a surprise, some might consider it a spoiler. Should probably include a warning at the beginning of the post.

Planning to see Serenity tomorrow. Firefly was a good show handled terribly by Fox (for example, they didn't bother showing the pilot as a...pilot). Fox wanted a Buffy clone, Joss wanted to tell a new kind of story...long story short, it didn't work out.

The Firefly DvD includes all aired and unaired shows and a few extras...it's worth getting if you like a decent, smart and witty sci-fi flick. Think of a cross between Stagecoach (the old John Wayne flick) and the anime Cowboy Bebop, add Joss Whedon style dialogue, and you have Firefly. Good stuff.

Great premise. Great story. Great dialogue. Just...

The casting continues to be the problem.

Biggest casting mistake: The Bonafide Concubine. Just not hot enough. It's sad but true that for sci fi to work properly, a leading lady just has to be droolworthy. If they used the chick from the pirate episode (where they saved the girl who ended up sabataging the ship) instead, the series might have survived. (She might not have had the acting chops, however).

Casting misfires: I like the captain. It's just he can't quite sell the sudden attitude changes of when he's being a badass captain vs being the heart of gold guy. He's too obviously a heart of gold guy. Ben Bowder does this much better in farscape, and his character wasn't nearly as hardcore as the dialogue for this captain suggest he should be.
The doctor, on the other hand, has the opposite problem, there's not even the little bit of charisma to latch on to understand the engineer's crush on him.
The pilot was just annoying. Reminded me too much of Hercules's sidekick (was it the same actor? hellifiknow).
Casting hits: River. Creepy as all hell, and sells the psychotic. The engineer. Cute as all hell, and sells the hardware talk. The black chick, competent, sells the quiet commando.
Casting home runs: Jayne, who is pretty much the reason to watch the show, because every other actor is more interesting when they interact with him.

The Pilot is not the hercules sidekick guy and he doesnt even look or act anywhere NEAR who you say he is... not to mention hes british, you might remember him in Knights Tale with Heath Ledger.

I only need to reply to your comment just because of the fact that the whole idea the leading Lady has to be a model is just sad and is why tv this day in age is all about finding the hottest people you can and show them having sex... and btw if you really think she is bad.. then you are wayyyyyyy to freaking picky in RL i bet.

Very good movie other than the fact that they mix in random Chinese symbols and hiragana/katakana. If you look carefully in the movie, you will notice an odd mix of Asian culture: chopsticks holder, dimsum, scrolled calligraphy and paintings, tea cups, noticeable influences from Sun Tzu and Bushido, and of course the random Chinese symbols they throw in.

Anyway, the characters on the ship's name is 寧靜 (traditional) or 宁静 (simplified). It means "calm" or "peace." In Mandarin Chinese, it is pronounced ning2jing4, or in 注音符號,ㄋㄧㄥˊㄐㄧㄥˋ. The Japanese pronunciation is open up to interpretation because 寧 is not a character used in Modern Japanese.

It makes sense, because from what I hear, the United States and China are super powers in the future...

Joss Whedon in the Box Set for the TV shot (which i highly recommend) gives reasons for the mixed culture. He goes into how China, Japan lead the way along with the US in space colinization and that the cultures mixed. He also joke that it was a easy way to "cuss" on cable and not get hit up by the FCC
