I'm a bit of a SEC homer, but these two look like they are going to be ugly to me:
Auburn vs Wisconsin.
Wisconsin has a bad defense, particularlly against the run. Auburn can run. By halftime this game will probably cover (haven't seen the line yet) and become a rout.
Georgia vs West Va.
W Va is going to try to make a statement. The problem is the statement will be "Yes, the big east is as weak as we thought". UGA, playing in Atlanta (might as well just call it a home game) will stifle WVa's spread offense and roll over em in another rout.

Don't sell Barry Alverez short. This is going to be a big game for those guys as it is his last game. I'd expect to see their A game. Will it be good enough for the Win? I don't think so, but I doubt this will be a rout.

Blearchie is proving something I read in the Sporting News a month ago, West Virginia is the most underrated team in the country. Rich Rodriguez is a great coach, and West Virginia's young talent is almost limitless. The only horrible thing about this is that the Sugar Bowl might as well be a home game for Georgia.

And West Virginia would have more representation, fan-wise, in New Orleans?
Athens is 8 hours driving from New Orleans, I imagine Morgantown is at least 13. UGA also has a much larger fan base nationwide, and I can only imagine those numbers are higher among southern states.

West Virginia travels their fans better than you could imagine. Doing so in the Georgia Dome will be tough, but if you look at their fan representation at the Gator Bowl over the last couple of years you would be surprised. Morgantown is a town of 25,000 people not including students, and they sell 70,000 tickets to every game. There's nothing else to do in West Virginia heh. My parents live in Indiana (my father is a WVU grad, and my mother is VP of the WVU alumni association in Indiana), and they've travelled to the last two WVU bowl games. How would WVU be represented in New Orleans? They might actually have half the stadium, you'd be surprised.
What West Virginia doesn't have is great TV ratings nationwide, but they do have fans that travel very well. Is the Big East a horrible conference? Yes. Is the Big 12 a horrible conference this year? Yes, but no one holds that against Texas. The only team WVU has lost too all year was Va. Tech when they were the number 3 team in the country(Va Tech only lost to Miami... oops forgot about their conferance championship game). Georgia lost to Florida(who lost 3 games, one to South Carolina) and Auburn (which may be the best team in the SEC).
Yes I'm a homer for WVU. I do think the people that think they are going to get blown out are seriously underestimating them. Beware, if the Big East doesn't lose their automatic BCS bid, they could be national title contenders each of the next 2 years.

Georgia is going to stop West Virginia, just like Texas is gonna stomp USC. There, I said it.

No shit? We were discussing IF the bowl happened to be where it was supposed to be this year in NO and not basically a home game for UGA.

Atlanta is about what? 45 mins down 78 from Athens? This is a home game for UGA even though it isn't listed as such.

Look's like USC will be bringing 2 hiesman winners to field this year.
good luck with that Texas.

You could show up with 22 heisman winners and lose. It is who shows up to play that will win the game.

I think theres an implicit "heisman winners show up to play" argument somewhere in there.

ROFL!! Very good point! :)
If Young plays like he did against A&M, Texas will have problems. If not, I think they have enough offense and more defense than USC and will pull it off.

Until they get to the NFL
Due to my age, memory is not quite what it used to be.....
....was Herschel Walker a Heisman trophy winner?
karmon shadowstalker
12-12-2005, 05:44 PM
yes, he was. However, he played USFL ball after Georgia.
He also tore it up his first year in the NFL - thats what facilitated the 3 1st round picks from Minnesota. And we all know who those picks were used on.

My point was that the majority of recent Heisman winners (since 1989) have been busts in the NFL.
2004 Leinart -- Jury's still out on him.
2003 Jason White -- Undrafted, already out of football.
2002 Carson Palmer -- Looks like he'll give Manning a run for his money as best qb in the NFL shortly.
2001 Eric Crouch -- They tried to convert him to a reciever, already out of football
2000 Chris Wenke -- Has more interceptions than TD's, firmly planted behind Delhomme on the depth chart
1999 Ron Dayne -- now with the Broncos, sucked in NYC. 3rd string back in Denver
1998 Ricky Williams -- Effective now when his heart's in it. We all know his story, was great for a couple years.
1997 Charles Woodson -- Only defensive heisman in it's history. Been a good CB for the Raiders, though moody.
1996 Danny Wuerffel -- Need I say any more?
1995 Eddie George -- Was a durable and effective back for the Titans, out of the league now
1994 Rashaan Salaam -- Had 1000+ yards his rookie year, then had 600 more for the rest of his career. Tried to make a comeback in 2003 and failed.
1993 Charlie Ward -- Never played a down in the NFL, was a mediocre NBA player with the Knicks
1992 Gino Toretta -- Never amounted to anything in the NFL
1991 Desmond Howard -- Was an effective return man, nothing more.
1990 Ty Detmer -- Had more interceptions in his career than TD's. His brother has had a longer career as a backup than him.
1989 Andre Ware -- Was a complete lost cause for the Lions.
So that's 4 good players out of the past 16 Heisman trophy winners, with the jury being out on 1 still. I'll still stand by my comment.
Why do I go back to 1989 and stop there? The prior 8 all had great careers with the exception of Mike Rozier. Barry Sanders, Tim Brown, Vinny Testeverde, Bo Jackson, Doug Flutie, Mike Rozier, Herschel Walker, and Marcus Allen. The Heisman has seemed like almost a curse though since 1990.

The heisman has become a political campaign thing anymore. It's pretty sad when you consider what the award means and what some of the award winners in years past have done.
That being said, this year's winner might really be something if he proves to be durable in the NFL ranks.
He also tore it up his first year in the NFL - thats what facilitated the 3 1st round picks from Minnesota.
Walker was the poster child for the way you can trade 1 player to build a superbowl team. I think alot of GMs learned from that move.

Trading, not trading for ;) After they got Deuce and Ricky decided to go smoke dope and strand the fins last year, that was looking like one of the better moves ever :p

This one really defined overrated. He got a try out with the Chiefs this year and was told to try the arena league :p While I like Trent Green, if you can't even make the roster in the number 3 spot yo him, you might want to just pack it in ;)

I think what he was talking about was when Ditka traded away an entire draft for the 5th spot when he saw Ricky Williams was available. That was over kill. At the time I thought it was a good move :)
