We lost the Olympic vote today, boo.

Because it's South America's turn and more so...because Brazil has to have it's moment. Just like Beijing. A big HEY we have made it so to speak.

Its all part of the new order of regional powers.

Madrid will probably lose, just due to that. Brazil has a lot of work to do, but an Olympic hosting win will assure that the right steps are taken to assure they are ready. If Atlanta can host a games, Rio certainly can and Spain is not that much better off than Rio. Not being part of the Euro zone should also assure that things can get done cheaper, so Rio certainly has an advantage.

Sorry, Chi-Town. The Olympics are not meant to be an exclusive club anymore.

Also, look for Mumbai to host a games soon.

Oh. I forgot to add. Brazil has a major new oil field. China is Brazil's top trading partner. Brazil is also a member of BRIC, a trading bloc of Brazil, Russia, India and China.

Means Brazil has unlimited funding to make this happen and all the right pieces are on the table. You think China is not going to hook Rio up with investment to make these games happen? Hell to the no. The IOC knows this. Follow the money. Chicago never had a chance.

Just a sample:

To be honest, I'll personally prefer somewhere outside the US , if nothing else it would be one new country I'll get to visit. But the influx of infrastructure, venues, and prestige is something Chicago could certainly use.

Oh well, maybe we'll have a DC/Baltimore 2020 Olympics instead.

The positive to RIO is it will still be in a time zone where I can watch the events live instead of tape delayed or in the middle of the night.

Based on my experience living downtown during the Atlanta Olympics, they aren't missing anything by not getting it. I wouldn't wish that mess on anyone.

Conservative celebrations over us not getting this are pretty bizarre.

The Olympics in Salt Lake City were awesome. Very well done and just a ton of fun for all those I knew who volunteered.

This can either be good for the people living in slums there, or it could be an increase of what some have called the "death squads" that have been accused of removing "undesirables" from the area at night.

There will be a lot of money spent on cleaning up and hiring for the related construction and concessions and so forth. This could be just the kind of event Brazil needs to show it is more than a resort. It does have a lot going on that much of the world is unaware of, with the focus being on the beaches and bikinis.

Heh, just watched the "Daily Show" from last night, and Stewart was talking about the Olympics bidding, and he cut to a clip of Glen Beck talking about how Vancouver lost "a billion dollars" hosting the games. Jon Stewart then asked, rhetorically, would those be the Vancouver Games that start next year???????

Brazil has some very nice spots (and is a world of difference when compared with Paraguay for example). When I visited the Yguazú Falls Park I felt like I was at Disney World.

Well, the Olympic committee are obviously all racists. I mean the combined forces of Oprah and Obama weren't enough to sway the vote. Clearly, the color of their skin was the deciding factor.
