Yeah, you have to expect the increase for all of the extra bandwidth tons of 3G iPhones are going to eat up.

Info is "officially" coming in, so bare with me as i add to this thread :P
You have to be eligible for an upgrade to get the 3G iphone. If you bought a 2g iphone, you are automatically eligible. There is no "noncontract" pricing available atm, so that could change (a way to thwart the hackers and people sending them overseas)
Workplace discounts will be eligible for 3G iphones unlike the 2g ones. (if you work for a company PM me and i will look up potential discounts, Malse/San if you dont have it let me check for you)

Wait a minute are you saying new customers to AT&T can't get the new iphone and only people who have the old one?
Cados Evilsbane
06-10-2008, 02:28 PM
Nope, he's just saying that there's a provision for current 2G iPhone owners to upgrade without having to mess-up an existing contract.
New subscribers can get the new 3G model for a subsidized price with 2-yr contract ($199 for 8-gig model and $299 for 16-gig model).

no no no , existing customers have to be eligible for an upgrade to be able to get the $199/$299 pricing. New customers get the $199/$299 (or adding a line to an existing AT&T account)
OR if you have a 2g iphone you are automatically eligible.

The funny thing is that everyone was whining about the lack of a 3G iPhone when the US basically had no 3G network infrastructure... (http://www.tuaw.com/2008/06/10/list-of-cities-that-are-in-atandts-3g-coverage/)
The death star--erm, I mean AT&T--has been building up its 3G coverage for the last year and a half. But still looks really empty to me. At least our European and Asian friends (don't know about Canada, Mexico, or South/Central Americas) can enjoy the fruits of 3G thanks to its tribandness, but it will take some time before the US cell phone market catches up.
The benefit for current iPhone owners? You can sign a new contract and pay the subsidized price even if you have years left on your contract. What is the sweet deal, you might ask? Whatever time you had on your contract when you do get a new iPhone 3G is wiped and you start with a fresh 2-year contract with the devil.

Odd, the AT&T reps around here say late August we'll see the activation of 3g towers. Of course Harrisburg appears to already have it according to that map.
EDIT: In fact on Monday had a multi-state outage for like 4hrs. The consipiracy theory was they were trying to do something with 3g and foobard it. Voice, data, were affected in PA, NJ, and Delaware.
Here's the company wide distro we got on it:
AT&T is currently experiencing problems with cell phone service. This problem covers PA, NJ and DE. It appears to only be affecting phone calls. Data appears to be working, albeit slower than normal.
We'll keep you updated as we know more.
Fun stuff for us since we rely heavily on AT&T for our pagers, blackberries, and other phones.

Grey, do you know if the new 3G BlackBerry is also coming out next month (http://www.engadgetmobile.com/2008/05/16/blackberry-bold-release-dates-pricing-leaks-out/)? Everytime I seriously consider the iPhone, I try to "type" on the keyboard and abandon the idea for awhile.

3G GSM UMTS / HSDPA / HSUPA devices operate in the UMTS frequency bands 800/850/1900/2100 or 850/1700/1900/2100 MHz:
2100 (downlink) / 1900 (uplink) for Europe, Africa, Australia, Asia (including South Korea and Japan) and Brazil (usually referred simply as UMTS2100
1900 for North and South America
2100 (downlink) / 1700 (uplink) for T-Mobile USA alone (usually referred simply as UMTS1700
900 for Australia (Optus and Vodafone Australia in rural areas) and in countries that currently use GSM900 in the future
850 for North and South America, Australia (NextG)
800 for Japan (NTT DoCoMo in rural areas)
By the way, iPhone 3G will not be worth the unlocking effort if you plan to use the phone only in the United States for its 3G features. You won't be able to use it with T-Mobile since the band they are using for 3G is the oddball 1700 MHz uplink / 2100 MHz downlink radio. In fact T-Mobile USA is the only cell phone provider in the world to use this oddball band.
If you live in the Americas (Canada/Mexico, South & Central America), you will be able to use the iPhone's 3G radio since the iPhone is tri-band (850/1900/2100). In fact, you'll be able to use the iPhone in almost every country that supports GSM UMTS 3G.
Beyond the fact that it can't even be used with T-Mobile, T-Mobile USA doesn't have great 3G coverage in comparison to AT&T's coverage. I don't know why people are still trying to buy iPhone 3G and unlock it for use with T-Mobile USA--you just won't be able to use the 3G functions. There are only two GSM/SIM-card based wireless vendors in the US, and T-Mobile's incompatibility with the supported bands cuts it out.

San,
The Bold we werew told late august, but dunno. I did play with one and its the best blackberry so far.
Fil,
If only voice went down they werent working on Data. The 3g data actualy works on cdma2000 technology and is completely seperate. 3g coverage is expanding pretty rapidly, in the sense 2 years ago there was none.
As far as unlocking it, we are activating it in store, so you have to sign a contract to even get the thing, so the cost and extra time involved wont be worth unlocking.
Rybit
06-12-2008, 09:15 PM
I'm just hoping that now they'll provide unlock codes after 3 months of good account status because I travel a lot and I'd still like to use the same phone in China and Hong Kong. It seems that they should do so now, since you have to sign a contract to even get the phone. Especially since they're touting the phone internationally.
I have the first generation iPhone so I hope it'll be painless to upgrade my account.
Greystone Thorngage
06-12-2008, 11:26 PM
it should be painless, but as far as unlocking, Apple isnt keen on the idea.
Cados Evilsbane
06-13-2008, 12:31 AM
I'm sure it won't be long before some sort of unlocking mechanism comes into play, if only for the purpose of just being able to use it internationally. Rybit's right, it is absolutely awesome to be able to just switch out the SIM card and use the same phone in a country you tend to travel to a lot.
I also wonder if this model will have built-in voice dialing? If not I'm sure some third-party program will come along anyway, if it's not available already even.
Kanyli
06-13-2008, 10:10 AM
Why is that anyhow? I would think that with an item like the iPhone Apple could dominate cell phones if they took it to every carrier.
Greystone Thorngage
06-13-2008, 11:47 AM
Apple wants a slice of the pie from the monthly revenue. For any company to agree to that, they want exclusive selling rights to it. AT&T has 5 years of iphone before every american carrier will have it. At that point Apple wont be getting the % they want.
Rybit
06-13-2008, 01:06 PM
The funny thing, though, is that AT&T in the US doesn't have any competitors in the 3G front. Even if T-Mobile were to build up their network, the iPhone doesn't support the same frequency/band as T-Mobile.
AT&T won't have any competitors in the US even if the phone were unlocked, I think....
Greystone Thorngage
06-13-2008, 01:31 PM
They could make it work on T-Mobile, and technically, its not too hard to switch out hardware and make CDMA versions for Verizon/Sprint. Look at the RAZR, it was AT&T only 2 years later everyone has it.
Rybit
06-13-2008, 02:00 PM
They won't go with CDMA, though. They're selling the same iPhone in Japan as they are in the United States. The only difference, of course, is localization, but you can switch your iPhone to any language. They're even including a SIM remover in every iPhone, including Japan and their provider, Softbank.
Apple doesn't like to produce custom versions of their products. They like to sell the same product everywhere if they can. The benefit of a GSM version that supports only three standard bands (Americas: 850 & 1900, Europe: 2100, and Asia/Oceania: 2100) is that they don't have to do much to convert the product from a US iPhone to a Japanese iPhone.
I think CDMA will be out of the question because Apple never builds a product for just one vendor. They like to keep the same product flowing all over the world.
It will stay SIM-based, but I don't know if the Infineon chip they are using is capable of a fourth band to just support T-Mobile's weird band. T-Mobile would be a threat to AT&T if they were on the standard North America band.
Sanchek

Okay with the new iPhone being released in just a few days I have some questions to anyone who may know about this stuff (Greystone, anyone).
1.) Will it probably be possible to add voice-dialing soon to the iPhone 3G via a program? I understand that tons of programs will be developed by independent providers via iTunes and I wonder if voice dialing (that runs seamless with Bluetooth) will be available.
I'm disappointed that voice dialing isn't a native iPhone feature. Most phones can already do that today (even cheap ones). It is very important to me as I would use this feature with my hands-free phone system in my car, especially with that new 'hands-free required while driving law' here in the US (that is a real law, right? =).
2.) With ATT as my carrier will it hurt to unlock/jailbreak the iPhone 3G for additional features? Can I not just turn it back to its default mode should the need arise?
3.) As a new non-business subscriber of ATT (I'm still debating whether or not to do it), can I pay a fee to have some options to "customize" a phone number? I won't be transferring my Verizon number as it's on a shared/business plan that really doesn't affect me financially, and the contract still has forever anyways. I'm kind of weird about what my phone number is (an OCD thing I guess), and I'd like this if possible.
Any info is appreciated!

1.) ATM no, an applet may comeout soon but nothing yet.
2.) I wouldnt recommend unlocking it, they took some extra precautions this time around to rpevent it.
3.) You can typically pick the area code and first 3, very rarely can you get the last 4. Depends on your area.

The phone is activated in the store so i need to work it out with my boss how its all going to work with the peeps here that want one. I will know more tomorrow.
Cados Evilsbane
07-07-2008, 05:08 PM
That sucks about the voice dial :/ What about multimedia messaging? Did they at least get that right this time with the new model?
Okay, so is the customization of the area code + first three a free service for new subscribers or is it a paid extra feature? The first three numbers after the area code are probably what I care most about anyway.
Thanks for the info btw.

Aye, I meant to post that we checked on this last week and were told we had to be in the store and have certain forms of ID.
This past weekend we switched to cheapy AT&T phones just so our numbers and account were already with AT&T. I have off Friday and we plan to hop in line and wait for our store to open its' doors at 8am. We have bribed a sales rep with coffee and donuts and he assures us we'll get our phones if we come thru. The store we are going to only has about 120 iphones for sale Friday. They are only letting 15 people in the store at a time.
Oh yeah, we're getting the pool next year b/c I need to do some tree removal so that means we're getting iphones Friday :D

Well we got ours. We were first in line b/c we're nerds and were there hours before the store opened. When we left the line was still out the mall doors and into the parking lot. We had some glitch from where we had switched to AT&T last week so it took like almost 2hrs to get everything done. There were so many people activating that the delay was like 15min. No one was crazy, no one was rude, we all had a good time in line chatting. It was organized, 15 folks in the store at any given time. It was like business as usual with nothing crazy except the lag time on the network causing the sales folks headaches.
Even while we were there FedEx delivered more, no one wants white either! Everyone getting 16s was getting black myself included. Now I'm charging it and downloading apps. I just can't wait for 3g :)
I hate that there is no insurance on the iphone but I did get the extended warranty just incase. Fun gadget but damn I have to do something with my nails I am struggling typing on the screen b/c they are long. So far that is my only gripe, I don't want to cut my nails but may have to if I can't get the hang of it :(
I do feel sorry for the salesguys though. Not b/c of idiot customers but b/c of the lag. So we bought our guy a nice large coffee for his troubles ;)

I am in the smaller store in my town. WE got 40 total with replinishment of 10 that sold in like 30min today.
For everyone who doesnt mind, we can direct fulfill the phone. Basically they order a phone for you, and process your credit card. In 7-10buisness days it gets to the store you oder it from. At the point it is shipped is when your card is actually charged. You then get a email AND a phone call from the store saying the phone is in, and then you go get it, get it activated and voila....you have a iphone
Crystana that might be something you want to do, because i can almost guarantee you there will be no lines and mobs tomorrow at any store because they will be sold out.

Yeah I wasn't surpised when I called my local store today only to be told that they're all out (even in my southern town where not a lot goes on).
I suppose I might do a direct order myself.
So do they have to handle the phone a lot to activate it? Haha because I would really like to get the protective plastic skin pieces on it before anyone really messes with it (no thanks to Apple for such useless glossy surfaces... the first iPhone was more practical with the metal backing).
Greystone Thorngage
07-13-2008, 06:51 AM
the metal backing was rumored to mess with signal strength and also cause some heat issues /shrug
A good rep doesnt have to take the protective plastic its shipped in off to activate it.
I would recommend direct order man, the rumors we are getting is "apple underestimated the demand drastically" and now there is going to be some Wii like shortages.
Direct Order inventory > Store replinishment also.

i WOULD worry about that charge. WE had a similar situation and if finance doesnt get it, they suspend service until its resolved. Last night I installed a Zagg.com-style Invisible Shield onto my iP3G. Not the actual brand but the same material, and it made me want to scream. Talk about a tedious process. The results are excellent - albeit a couple small air bubbles I didn't notice until too late - but wow I don't think I ever want to go through that again!
Anyways it's a great product for anyone wanting to keep their iP3G looking new. Way more effective than a standard cheap screen protector, and this thing covers the entire body of the phone, minus the ports of course. I will use it in tandem with a nice plastic case for double protection.

The iP3G's new, more rounded edges and design make it all the more difficult as well. I do think I prefer the shape of the original model from my experiences with friends' phones.
Your store actually applies those skins for customers?

OK so today I tested the VPN (mocha) and wow pretty spiffy. I was RDP'ed to my work PC from my iphone. If only it could do higher res and the damn keyboard didn't take up most of the screen or if you could input one of those small rollup keyboards holy shit I'd never feel tethered to a PC while oncall again.

What have all the iPhone 3G users around here experienced so far in regards to battery life? Mine hasn't been too stellar (even if it's on standby most of the time), though I understand a number of factors can contribute to that (I use WiFi on it most of the time and probably have data push on too).

data push is power hungry, and also most people still use the phone WAY more than "normal" The phone should get you through the day, but thats about it.

1. There is a leather slide in pouch type guy that AT&T sells, SKU# 75087 that i usually recommend
2. No, the iphone bluetooth isnt multi-thread, and has no optional services for bluetooth periphials.
3. Yes.....duh.
4. No

My battery life lasts pretty much throughout the day unless I'm doing allot with applications or things using GPS. I disabled push and set fetch to manual and I took 3g off unless I feel like I really need it for things.
I use the leather hip case and love it. I have yet to put a protector on it that didn't screw up and make me rip it off. I just pamper it and clean it allot and when I have it on my desk I usually have a cloth under it.
I love this damn phone, perhaps too much b/c I'm always dinking around it trying out new apps and such. There are some really great apps for it but I do have gripes.
1. no voice commands for bluetooth
2. no dock for it yet
3. some apps lock it up (not iphones fault entirely)
4. camera sort of sucks, but better than most cell cameras
5. better idiot patrol over people who release shitty apps and people can't get their money back
6. single thread bluetooth sucks, come on apple this sucks
7. I want a text to speech app for my GPS pls
8. creating a calendar event does not sync with your exchange calendar booooo!
9. can't delete standard factory apps, booooo!
With this phone I can RDP to my PCs, I can connect to my work VPN over edge, wireless, or 3g. RAWR!
There isn't much I can't do with it, and probably I've used it least for an iPod b/c I use the AoL radio or youtube on the phone. Seriously it's the best cell I've had yet and I'm crazy in love with it.

Check out this dock for iPhone 3G w/ remote:
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT&item=150276699529
http://www.premiertek.net/pictures/CRD-IUNIRMT-BK-1.jpg
Claims to be compatible with iPhone 3G so I picked one up (it utilizes removable insertion plates of which iPhone 3G is one provided).

Look like some useful ports for one cradle and power & data cables provided (but not A/V).

Removable plates.
Looks pretty good to me, and cheaper than any official dock as far as I know.

Call me silly but I will wait for a bit to buy a dock. Though the dock w/remote looks spiffy.

I got the above dock that I ordered and it works very well with iPhone 3G. Syncs with the PC, charges, the controller works for music, but I've yet to try the A/V cable since I haven't received it yet. Dock is of metal and plastic construction.

I don't know if this has been discussed but I will ask in case anyone knows. I have no idea how to dock/charge my Bluetooth earpiece with my new 3g iPhone. Anything I can do?
