Following up on the last thread...and in the category of good news, assuming it's proven true:

Napoleon, Ohio’s Doug Pelmear claims that he has created a V8-powered 1987 Ford (http://www.leftlanenews.com/ford.htm) Mustang (http://www.leftlanenews.com/best-mechanic-ever-ohio-man-tunes-ford-mustang-to-produce-400-horsepower-and-return-110-mpg.html#) that develops 400 horsepower and 500 lb-ft of torque on E85, can accelerate from 0-60 in about three seconds – on its way to a top speed of 180 mph – and still returns an astonishing 110 mpg.

Pelmear has even entered his car into the Progressive Automotive X Prize, one of the world’s foremost green (http://www.leftlanenews.com/best-mechanic-ever-ohio-man-tunes-ford-mustang-to-produce-400-horsepower-and-return-110-mpg.html#) car competitions that challenges contestants to “design viable, clean and super-efficient cars that people want to buy.” If you ask us, the judges should just hand over the $10 million grand prize to Pelmear right now.

I'll believe it when I see independent confirmation.

So many of these types of reports have popped up for decades.

Like they say, if it seems to good to be true, it probably is. Probably a decimal point issue, it either gets 11mpg or has 40hp.;)

Not physically possible unless he's got some secondary engine doing the majority of the work, or just doesn't know how to instrument things. My bike's computer will tell me I'm getting 99.9 mpg going down hill out of gear.

This article is linked in the comments of the first one:

He claims to be getting about 38% efficiency out of the motor as opposed to the typical 8%.

We'll see. . .

8% ... of what?

Most modern engines are in the 20-30% thermal efficiency range. You can push 50% in certain specialized applications although not in a car with so much variability required in output and various limitations on size and heat. If you remove the rice racer qualities of a lot of cars (last time any of you had to do 175?) you could convert them to six-stroke or something similar that recaptures waste heat for other purposes but that would make too much sense.
