Looking for some suggestions. Basically, my girlfriend's parents have a condo in Florida that was fully furnished, but they got renters who wanted to move in and put all the furniture in storage.
A few years later, its still there and I've got an empty house, so we figure their furniture can now have a home for free. The dilema is how to get it here.
PODS will cost me about $2,000 and I'll have to get down there to load it myself, or find someone down there to load it.
Even driving down, getting a U-Haul down there, bringing a few friends to help me move and getting hotels and stuff will cost around $2,000.
I can't help but think there has to be a better way to go about this.

So any ideas?

Based on the quotes my old roommate got to move his stuff from Atlanta to Chicago, that probably isn't out of line.

Don't go pack it yourself. It would be more expensive for you to go there and back than to just pay someone like Allied.

Better to sell anything replaceable than move it. When I moved from Texas to Oregon the move ended up being higher than the replacement-value of my stuff except for one or two items, one of which (a mountain bike) promptly got stolen.

If you're going to UHaul it, find a buddy and just iron man drive it, that'll be your cheapest option by far.

If I was in your situation, I'd do what Sanchek suggested.

Allied is $1600 to $2400 depending on the weight, but we still need to go down there to let them into the storage facility. But we might be able to find someone down there to do it for us, a friend or something. Thanks for that advice. Amazing its cheaper than PODS and they do the work for you.

It's because they aggregate several shipments into a single freight run, so that you aren't paying for the entire run yourself.

There are other national moving companies other than Allied if you want to shop around for quotes. Unfortunately the only one which comes to mind is United.

Also the whole point of paying someone to move for you is so you don't have to do anything  Going down there, in my opinion, would defeat the purpose.

Yeah, we'll probably just find a friend down there to let them in. Its to make sure the movers take everything they're supposed to and don't steal anything, etc. The storage company would be liable if anything went missing that wasn't supposed to.

I am completely unmoved by this question.

Found a moving company that'll move all the shit for $1600. Like everyone else, they need someone to come down there to let them into the storage facility and sign off that they picked up all the right stuff - so we convinced Martha's retired dad he needed a fishing trip in the keys and he'll meet the moves on his way down.

Hope you like the stuff you get!
