Just passed a tough new immigration related bill here in Colorado:
http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20060711/ap_on_re_us/colorado_immigration
Sen. Dan Grossman, one of four Democrats to vote against the measure, said: "I don't think the poor people of the state of Colorado or businesses of the state of Colorado should have to pay because we want to play politics with immigration."
Umm.. news flash Mr. Grossman... this won't effect poor Coloradoans, moron.
Would like to see something along the lines of punishing Companies that hire illegals (putting in place a system to check status like what is used for gun purchase checks). Taking away state benefits may not actually help alone as the reason for being here is still in place. A formal "guest worker" program is needed as well.
Thoughts?

It's a tough bill to be sure. I wonder what's the right path overall tho. Living here in Utah we have similar problems with a growing illegal populace.
Before we do anything I'd like to see.
1) Secure the border as tight as possible....fence...landmines...hell I don't care how.
2) You're caught breaking the law...deported to the country of origins prison system. Caught coming back in before a reasonable sentence/time has passed? Sanctions of some sort against that country and deportation...again.
3) I agree on the companies hiring illegals, need to get tough with them...
4) Folks that have been here and been productive law abiding? Back taxes ( within reason) and some path to legality.

How about if we catch an illegal coming over we send them back with a few people in out prison system... or we send back any "legals" they are caught with. Turn them on themselves.

Last month, the City Council of Hazleton, Pa., tentatively approved a measure that would revoke the business licenses of companies that employ illegal immigrants; impose $1,000 fines on landlords who rent to illegal immigrants; and make English the city's official language.
"Illegal immigrants are destroying the city," Hazleton's Republican Mayor Lou Barletta said then. "I don't want them here, period."Ouch! That's the type of action that's needed, but the mayor might want to watch how he phrases things.
Just for good measure I want to repeat myself: remove the reasons to come here illegally, and the problem will largely sort itself out. I agree 100% with going after employers and the like, who knowingly and willingly hire illegals.

Remove the reasons for coming here.
Okay, let's make ourselves a 4th world country!!! /tease
Have you seen their living conditions? That alone is enough to bring them here vs their present situation.
You have to barricade, to punish and to sustain....
Ahhhhh and yes go after the employers.

I was joking with a poli sci professor I train with and said I was going to run for president. he asked what my campaign points were. I told him I was going to bring every single american soldier/airman/marine/seaman back to the Us. I was going to post them on the borders with shoot to kill orders for anyone crossing the border anwhere but legal checkpoints.
I was then going to charge any country a fee if they wanted us to come in and straighten out their issue, IE somolia. if the UN wanted troops, pay for the trip, including wear and tear, wages etc.
Of course then it got into the topic of folks from Haiti an Cuba coming over, I told him jokingly that I was going to nuke haiti and tell cuba they are next if they dont stop coming here. at this point he said I might get elected if I had a few more ideas and didnt mention the nuking thing till after I was in office. hehe
