Was looking at my calendar, and Lost Fires has eight birthdays in the month of August. A busy month for celebrating. :D
Between July 19 and August 23, there are nine altogether, so Leo is well represented.

Since last month was my and Willgatus' birthday, I just thought I'd mention that it was a standing joke in my little guild for a long time (then as AC and now) how many Cancers there are in it - specifically me, Faervas, Falikar, Exhume, Willgatus (all still in WoW), and several others (a very large proportion of a small guild), all born between 28 June and 18 July. I'm not one for astrology but one day while I was taking my walk last month I couldn't help but spuriously muse that the time of the 12th-13th week of pregnancy would have been right about the winter solstice for our crew: Minimum day length during the key window when sex hormones are influencing brain wiring --> maximum melatonin --> minimal testosterone/estrogen (relative to the rest of the year) --> mellow, low sexual dimorphism (neurologically, anatomy gets laid down much earlier) folks.
Its a totally spurious hypothesis and have no idea if any studies have been done correlating day length or melatonin levels during that part of pregnancy with behavioral outcomes such as aggression or gender identity, but it *is* known that those are the key weeks for gender-stereotypic wiring in the brain and Dr. Money and his band of folks at John's Hopkins have had all sorts of fun altering the development and behavior of sheep by perturbing hormone levels during that window. Still, it's kind of fun to think about...

- You don't know how lucky you are.
I read somewhere that if you have 23 people in a room there is a 50% chance that two of them have the same birth day (not year though)....
discuss...
And what is low sexual dimorphism?
Edit: Okay I read about dimorphism but can you give me some examples please.

Wonders of probability, makes you awe at first glance, but if you look closer : (I love that)
How to determine that you have 50% chance that two share the same birthday?
Easiest is to calculate the opposite probability, that these 23 people are all born on a different day.
First one can be born any day, the second one has 364 possibilities left, the third 363, etc.
You have to calculate a formula like :
365/365 * 364/365 * 363/365 * ... * 344/365 * 343/365.
That's roughly 0.49, so a bit less than 50% chance that in your room all these persons are born on a different day, means the opposite is 51% chance to have two born the same day.
Like many things with probability, we only focus on our point of view (wow that's strange, there is half a chance that someone has the same birthday as ME in this room), or we only focus on the "winning" chances rather than seeing the whole (for each lottery winner, there are millions of losers), and then we found weird coincidences.
Like this thread, Leo's will mainly post, even people that usually don't post often, and it will leave a feeling of "hey, we have a lots of Leo's around!", even if I'm almost (almost ;) ) sure that the zodiac signs are represented in globally same quantities across our board.
Pisces here, damn you to hell you fat cats!! :p

Edit: Okay I read about dimorphism but can you give me some examples please.
Everything from minute mental development differences to genital configuration -- same genes expressed differently based on developmental factors in this case. The canonical dimorphic trait is probably size; whether the male or female of a species is larger, and by what ratio, is usually indicative of a number of other traits.
The examples Nydia was talking about are things like risk-taking tendencies, introvert/extrovert bias, problem solving biases, spatial awareness and intuition, INFP vs ENTJ style temperment sorting, etc, that are associated with "male" versus "female" behaviors. That is, people who were in the mental groundwork phase of natal development during the weeks when their mothers had lower overall hormonal levels tend to be less male- or female-dominant in their personalities.

Thanks Malse, for that succinct response - I was on the road today and didn't have time to reply, and yes, that is what I meant. In a broader sense, sexual dimorphism refers to, as you might expect, differences between the sexes within the same species; some animals like elephant seals and lyrebirds have high sexual dimorphism (differing size/shape/behavior), while others have very low sexual dimorphism (males and females look and act very similarly). I was speaking specifically about the window where sex hormones influence brain development, as Malse mentioned - and as the hypothesis might predict we are a pretty mellow bunch with little extreme gender specific behavior, which could, especially if you were looking for it, could be attributed to the low dose of sex hormones we all got at that time due to the short day length (or many other factors), but we do have a *lot* of Cancers (50% of the guild at one point :) ).
By contrast, my esteemed colleague, as well as my sister, are my polar opposite (Sagittarians, whose 12th-13th week of development coincided closely with the *summer* solstice, and presumably got the maximum sex hormone hit at that time; and I know both individuals well enough to say that they each exhibit strong sex-stereotypic personality and temperment traits :). The sample size, obviously, isn't large enough to be worth anything, but it was kind of fun to think about ;).
As for you showboating Leos, happy birthday, and all I have to say is I want some pictures of that sandwich ;).
Regards,
Nydia
