Anyone beta this or considering playing ? Thinking of picking it up. Dark Templer seems alot like a pimp Sk. Curious how the combat system really works. Not having a target ring reminds me of the old days of eq.

Then the combo moves seems pretty nice as well ala mortal combat.

I have heard nothing but bad things about it from people in beta. But who knows, there were some pretty neat concepts going on maybe they can polish i.

I'm playing the beta now, and have been trying out a number of the classes to try and get a feel for the balance.

I can't really give a 100% review of the game because I'm still playing within the first 20 levels, which is akin to something like an XBox 360 or PS3 game due to it's being focused on you, the player. You can opt out and play with others, and there are quests available, but you'll miss out on some great loot.

The combat system is a mix of reflexes and using your action bar. For those that just love lots and lots and lots of buttons/abilities to push, you'll probably be disappointed. The graphics are amazing and runs really quite well on a fairly cheap machine (I was playing it on a S939 3800X2 with 2gb ram, winxp and a Radeon X1650 256mb vid card.) It wasn't perfect, but playable.

I'll post more as I get deeper. My thoughts on the game as of right now? It's definately not ready for release. Still needs more polish. Unless I see some major improvements soon, there's no way this game is gonna be ready for release in May and deliver what they've been selling.

Still playing this game a bit. The main problem I have with this game is the fact that the first 20 levels is done through a story mode IE: Singleplayer. This is great.....the first time you do it. But if you want to try multiple classes to see what you like, you have to do the same damn thing every bloody time. It gets tedious pretty quick. Can you bypass it? Sure!.....at lvl 80.

I also don't like how it's instanced. I can understand that due to the graphics (hardware req's is pretty high if you want a smooth running game), but as soon as you get into combat with multiple players and multiple mobs around, it lags BAD! I'm sure that they are stress testing the connection (I'm hoping!) but for a game that requires you to be on your toes due to it being more action based, lag = dead.

I'll post more as I play more.

That bit about being lvl 80 and bypassing the newbie section, does that mean that once you get a toon to 80, any subsequent toons you make can skip the newbie zone?

Yeah, the first 20 lvls (aka Newb Zone) is required for EVERY new character until you get one to 80.

Believe me, when you want to play various character types (it IS a beta test after all), it gets tedious very fast. Those of you with Alt-itous will go bonkers.

Binuven
04-28-2008, 10:46 PM
That does it! I'm calling a pass on this one. It's just not the game I thought it was going to be.

Already cancelled my pre-order and keeping my ear to the ground for the next best thing. This game will make a GREAT XBox 360 MMO, but for PC players, I think you're being sold short. It's neat for a bit, but once the novelty wears off (quickly I might add), it tends to become tedious.

I won't say this is a bad game! Some people will enjoy this, but for me this game is a dud.

Yeah, not a lot of good stuff being said about the game on MMORPG.com . I thought I might have been the only one not to like the "next big thing"!

That being said though, Stargate Worlds is now taking beta apps!

It's fun at first, but I personally found it tedious after awhile. Not a lot of new stuff to keep me interested.

It'll do well, Funcom is a great company, but I think it'll be a solid success as opposed to being on the same level as WoW (subscription wise). However, then again stranger things have happened hehe.

In response to Jedd's post in the AoC localities post:

"Still debating playing that game... Played the beta earlier this month and had insane loading times, and wondered if they would go the right direction with it... Any updates on playability and how the game works over level 14 would be very much appreciated."

I was up in Monterey this weekend and my friend and his wife were playing the pre-release. Load times seemed fine. The game looked good and they were both having fun with it.

I would recommend reading Tim over at Ctrl alt del's comments on the game:

http://www.ctrlaltdel-online.com/ (news post from 5/19/08 if its no longer on the main page)

I didn't play the Beta Stress test, but he mentions that its almost a whole different game now.

I don't know if load times will increase with the influx of players today, though.

Had some issues getting it to run last night. Went to common issue thread on their forums and used Simpleconfig.exe + updated my video drivers and boom got it to work.

I will be purchasing a Dual core processor now however as I want all the graphics working.

Love the combat system, very intuitive. The battle graphics are pleasing.

Oooo and rescuing the hot slave woman with promises of rewards was pure Howard. lol

Just got an e-mail from Funcom:

Greetings!

You have been a long and thrustworthy participant in our community, and as such we would like to thank you for helping us form Age of Conan into the marvelous product it is today. The last weeks has seen some serious enhancment to the game, and with the release we will be opening several new areas and neverbefore seen content in the launch version of the game. What and where it is? You have to find out for yourself!

As a sign of gratitude for your aid, we are pleased to offer you the in-game item used by those loyal to King Conan: The Drinking Cape. This item will allow your characters (one game account only) to free of charge demand the very sought after alcholic drink of "Ambrosia" - free and in unlimited supplies for life! After having claimed your cape, merely find one of the kegs in the finer Inns of Hyboria and click it whilst wearing your cape to receive your drink.

To register your cape, log in to your account page by https://register.ageofconan.com clicking here and under the option "Use a Key" - enter this key:

(Haha get your own code)

Once this has been done, use the command "/claim" inside the game to claim your in-game items. These items work for all the characters you create on your account. Note that all in-game items are only available on full accounts, and do not work on pre-order, buddy or (later) trial accounts.

Note that this item will not be made available again at later dates - so wear it with pride!

Regards,
Funcom

Anyone else get one?

Binuven
05-21-2008, 09:32 PM
It's kinda early. From what I saw during closed beta, it was pretty solid, but dunno if it'll have the broad appeal that they hope for. It seems to be doing rather well despite the server outage today. :)

Akom of Cazic Thule
05-21-2008, 09:42 PM
Yeah... too early to judge. But I will say one thing... the level 1 - 20 content could use some sprucing up. Different quests, same zones. Gets a little monotonous. Still fun though.

Aye, I think I would have bought the game if I hadn't attempted to play almost every class, but hey, that's what beta is for right?

You cannot imagine the monotony of having to do that single player quest (lvls 1-20) over and over again. It pretty much turned me off of the game, amongst other things. It just got old quick for me. Sad really, as this game has so many good virtues.

Fandros
05-22-2008, 11:35 AM
Biggest adjustment I'm trying to make is realizing that my ole use of the arrow keys and the mouse for the rest of the interface really doesn't cut it well.

I find myself missing combo's because I can't click the right "attack directional" after the initial set up.

That and knowing/adjusting defense to account for the attack direction of the NPC.

Can you remap keys in Conan as we did in EQ?

Moglor
05-22-2008, 02:28 PM
So this game is being created for the xbox 360 as we speak....You can evidently hook a xbox 360 controller up to your PC to play games with it.....Are you able to play age of conan with the controller yet?

Hehe, granted I probably deserved getting drove nuts, but during beta test, I'm supposed to....well....TEST!

Cados Evilsbane
05-24-2008, 09:40 AM
Confirmed, I was watching two relatives playing AoC (release version) and they were both doing a separate, single player lvl 1-20ish deal full of the same quests.

It didn't seem very appealing to me (the game in general) from what I saw, but then again I've yet to play it myself at all.

To me the lore of the game is just a little narrow. All three races all humanoid, not a lot of traditional full-scale fantasy stuff (elves, gnomes, that sort of thing), although that has been done quite a bit before. I think I'll stick with Vanguard for now.

Enjoying the game and currently farming tier 1 content...we are priming for Black Citadel for Tier 2 content tomorrow....just behind some folks across the servers progression wise but its fun.

It's frustrating in terms of lag in massive 48 on 48 battles for me...like a slideshow of crap. Trebuchets finally work. Fandros would be proud that I went from being a meatshield to ranger =)

Hope everyone is doing well....I was talking to Saman today and we decided to look up the boards to see who is running around here.

Chalk one up for irony but I ended up in Vae Victus which apparently is a common name for guilds in mmos (<insert latin guild name>)

Punx is still the best!
