Maybe a kenetic energy charger would be better. There is a G Shock watch powered by that and plenty of people keep their phones in their pants pockets.

Because you can't depend on that being there, and it's also an inefficient drain on the base station and substantially reduces the available bandwidth for communication. You spend less total power to recharge the battery over a wire.

We've known about broadcast power for a long time. Tesla was doing it over a hundred years ago. It was generally ruled out for being impractical in most cases because copper conductance works a lot better for most purposes than EM field inductance. The idea isn't new, and maybe one day you will see local area power fields, for instance, to power a personal area network, I really doubt much is going to change to make this a widespread idea.
