What if the al-Qaida deputy spoke, and nobody listened? That's essentially what happened today when the propaganda division of the terrorist group released its latest video--complete with a major new speech by the al-Qaida deputy, Dr. Ayman al-Zawahiri--celebrating the anniversary of the 9-11 attacks. Al-Qaida released the new 90-minute tape (http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/26611113/)to the Al Jazeera television network (http://english.aljazeera.net/), played select portions of it throughout the day. But the tape has received scant attention in the United States, especially compared to recent 9-11 anniversaries.

Terrorism analysts say that Americans--and American media outlets--are ignoring al-Qaida messages at their own peril. For many Americans, terrorism concerns are "falling off the radar, as al-Qaida has been silent in the USA (and much of the West) since 9-11," said Michael Sheehan, the former counter-terrorism official for the State Department and the City of New York. "Foreign attacks are mostly background noise. This is troublesome, for if we lose our focus they will attack us again at home," said Sheehan, who is now an NBC News terrorism analyst.

Robert Grenier, the former CIA counter-terrorism official and former CIA station chief in Islamabad, agreed. "We probably overreacted initially" to al-Qaida threats after the 9-11 attacks, Grenier said, "and we are under-reacting now." He said that while al-Qaida has suffered setbacks in recent years, it is resurgent along the Pakistan-Afghanistan border and is still extremely dangerous. He said Zawahiri's messages should not be discounted. "This man, unlike Bin Laden, is still an active terrorist. What he has to say to the faithful" still matters, Grenier said.

What did he say?

So what did Zawahiri say?
As the wire services reported, Zawahiri said Tehran was "cooperating with the Americans in occupying Iraq and Afghanistan." He slammed Iran for recognizing the two governments. He also criticized the Shiites for not calling for a jihad in Iraq against the "Crusader occupier." (In militant postings, "crusaders" is shorthand for U.S. troops in Iraq.)

"The guardian of Muslims in Tehran is cooperating with the Americans in occupying Iraq and Afghanistan and recognizes the two hireling governments there," al-Zawahiri said. Zawahiri has been increasingly singling out Iran and Shiites in his messages, most recently in April, describing the "Persians" as the enemy of Arabs and complicit in the occupation of Iraq.

I must say Jedd, you have been most vocal in saying that Iran as our enemy is being trumped up by Bushies along with oddly enough in your case Bylimet has said that a reason to attack Iran is most likely to hide Halliburton complicity under Cheneys command.

I truly wonder how many times the American people have to get hit in the head before they realize who's hitting them...I wonder who said that about 55 years ago or so?

Hmmmm, one might infer from the comments by the terrorist that there is some conflict between the Sunni and Shiite. I am shocked.

But the tape has received scant attention in the United States, especially compared to recent 9-11 anniversaries. I can assure you that the military and intelligence people have not ignored this. In fact, they were looking forward to this year's anniversary video. It was produced by all new people. Wonder why.

the videos still got produced, yet new people in the videos. I wonder why? Perhaps because you cannot kill terrorism with bombs, you just kill a terrorist.

Certainly we can have success killing them. But it is just a game of "wack-a-mole"?

We can't, and certainly don't want, to do this forever.

End Game plz.

Speaking of anniversary....

On Sunday they were running these shows based off of survivor stories in the WTC. I literally sat on the couch with a box of kleenex and bawled. I didn't want to watch b/c it upset me so much but at the same time I felt like if I didn't watch it I wasn't giving proper respect to the people who died that day. I'm not that much of a softy but hearing the stories of folks who were there and how others helped each other or how some people chose to one way or another just killed me.

I gave that choice of viewing maybe a seconds consideration, and went with football. I don't want to seem callous, but enough is enough. The only reason that material is put forth any longer is to reinforce the Giuliani types who want to keep everyone afraid and voting for security over any other consideration.

There were too, too many tragic stories that came out of that day, and too, too many heroic acts by too, too many people. But, we have grieved, dealt with anger and rage, found our own ways of accepting that we will never fully comprehend the mentality of those that would perpetrate such an act, and found our own ways of moving on with the lives we each lead. Stop shoving that day back down our throats, you frakking politicians and media nutjobs!!!

We have enough people like Giuliani on the one side and jedd on the other that raise those flags at every opportunity that we don't need to have the media and the actual (real) politicians doing it.

And btw, was it Jon Stewart who commented that Giuliani gets royalties every time someone mentions 9-11?

I'm pretty sure it was something like "you can fool some of the people all of the time, and all of the people some of the time, but you can also fool all of the people long enough to get (re)elected."
