What web browser are each of you using? I know this is a pretty innocuous thread topic but Im curious about alternative to IE. Ive been testing Mozilla and wondering about other alternatives.

Im sure you can all find something to argue about.

Been using Firefox for a couple weeks now. I mostly hate it. And, I still have to use IE to get many of the sites I visit to work right.

I've been perfectly happy with IE until they removed the virtual java machine from it :(

"virtual java machine"? Well, I guess that's a good description for any Java implementation coming from Microsoft :p

Are these other ones any better?

Just as good pretty much, and not affected by worms, viruses and other MS-only crap.

Firebird is pretty darn smooth. Built-in popup blocker. I've even got my wife using it.

You should not use the MS JVM anyway. It is full of security holes that bypass all of the usual security policies in IE. Use the Sun JVM. It integrates into IE just as well as the MS one did, but is far more secure (and maintained).

FYI on the popup blocker. Even if you didn't want to run something like google toolbar for popup blocking, IE has that built in (along with much better activex security handling) in sp2.

Firefox is a really good browser. I'm not saying that because many people think Microsoft is the evil empire (they were the underdogs, once) and I'm really ambivalent towards Microsoft. Firefox renders pages many times faster than Internet Explorer (and much faster than Mozilla, too). Plus 99% of the time, Firefox displays most pages correctly.

The only time you will have problems with Firefox is if you visit pages with non-conforming HTML standards (such as all MSN sites, Microsoft.com, etc) or anything that includes ActiveX code. Other than that, you'll find it an excellent browser.

It took some time to be accustomed to, because of it's different GUI, but I have to say that it's very hard for me to use a browser other than Firefox now because of it's tabbed browsing, integrated google search bar (yes, I know you can get one for IE that has the spyware included), and popup-blocking feature.

Debating over the best browser is like debating religion. It's really up to you.

I have been using Mozilla for quite awhile. My favorite parts are the popup stopper, tabbed browsing, and custom skins.

To use an unsupported product is dangerous.

Ok, Java Virtual Machine.. my mistake Buadyen. Also, how can I download and install Sun's java client? It's really irritating not being able to run and java-based applications on the net.

http://www.java.com/en/download/ I think. Hard to tell, because it automatically redirects after it sees I've already got a JVM installed.

I'd like to point out that the last Microsoft patch for IE (which isn't a patch, per se) disables the ADODB.Stream active-x function. The folks over at eeye security suggest also disabling the active-x bit for Application.Execute, although it's not quite as dangerous as the ADODB.Stream problem.

http://www.eeye.com/html/research/alerts/AL20040610.html

These are the holes that for the last two years most spyware companies have been exploiting.

Oddly, I use the ADODB.Stream function in logon scripts to download files from a web-based server. Lucky me :(

When I finally quit IE I ran Ad Aware and Spybot ... my usual 35 - 40 objects found (per week). I ran with Mozilla for this entire week without touching IE and did them again today. ZERO objects found. /rude IE ... Im never going back.
