This is the base I am at. Satellite photos, troop numbers and where the aircraft park. Because it is important that everyone needs to know this..... ??

I can't believe this isn't some horrible breach of national security. Unbelievable that someone can post this shit that potentially puts our troops at more danger than they already are. I'm still shaking my head, simply unbelievable.

This is just some speculation on my part, but I'm wondering if the information they post isn't already officially released. The site claims to get 16 million page views per month, so I'm rather certain the U.S. government knows about it.

As far as the satellite images are concerned, you can get those from Google: http://maps.google.com/maps?q=balad,+iraq&ll=33.942363,44.366570&spn=0.076439,0.185257&t=k&hl=en

They're a hell of alot more accurate, too. =/

yeah but china blocks google satellite images, you'd think the US could block military sensitive information, for at least the safety of our troops. I'm well aware the stuff is available, my point is, if it compromises the security of our troops, it shouldn't be.

You should spend some of your shade-time over there reading The Transparent Society (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0738201448/103-1470002-5416618?v=glance&n=283155&n=507846&s=books&v=glance).

Anyone that wants to blow you up can always find some way to get that kind information if it exists. You'd be some combination of shocked and depressed to know how cheaply most people can be bought off. Restricting information access by means of human security has always been exactly as secure as the least reliable person who can get to it. Don't forget that Iraqis were in possession of that particular piece of property for quite some time, and I think they can draw maps without satellite help.

Yep, fear not Trikki. Back in the day, the vietcong did pretty good without satelite maps and photos. They used to have people draw maps with locations of command bunkers, aircraft parking etc...

Hehe, yeah, if you could have seen a Sapper work his way through the concertina wire, rigged with claymores, using a piece of grass to feel for trip wires, and cover a firebase in less then 20 minutes, and have a detailed sketch prepared from that reconaissance, you would have a whole new respect for the folks that were fighting us in Nam.

That was one of the first demonstrations they showed us using a "friendly" when we were getting our first "in-country" training. And still, they were damn hard to spot even knowing they were there with a Starlight scope at night.

It is disheartening to see that kind of info on the net Trikki, but if it were not there it would be available somewhere else.

It's just a little disheartening knowing that a 13 year old pimple faced kid with an internet connection can do it though. The government I am sure knows about it, they know about everything. I guess it isn't a big deal to them, the enemy can launch inaccurate mortars in, but they sure as shit can't fly any bombers over us.

If it makes you feel any better, all the 13 year old is going to do is post about it on myspace before attacking himself with an orange peeler, and all of the hundreds of thousands of people around the world who might want to do you harm are more limited by their ability to get away with doing anything to Balad than their ability to find it.

Oddly enough the Army just recently made new policy concerning things like this, photos and blogs due to the astounding amount of imformation out there, mostly put out with good intentions but still information that doesnt belong out there.
