Last night I attended the White House Correspondents Dinner for my third time, President Bush's eighth. This is the one time of year Hollywood comes to Washington, mostly for the chance to be in the room as our President makes a fool of himself on purpose, for all the people who rip him a new one every other day. Every year there is also a professional comic who never is as funny as President Bush.

Bush's theme last night was looking back on the past eight years and the finality of it all ... regardless of who wins, he won't be back next year. And yet, while he was an abysmal President ... he really would have made a great figurehead.

A minor plotline on The West Wing was a petition to create an American monarchy like Britain's Queen to handle the day to day duties of groundbreakings, events, military funerals, and all of the public stuff freeing up our President to do their job of running the country. I've met Bush a dozen times, most of them for fluff events but ultimately hours and hours of his time where he wasn't running the country. Maybe that's why we keep ending up with the likeable "guy you'd like to drink a beer with" over the most qualified candidate?

He killed last night, did a ton better than Craig Furgeson. Maybe Bush'll get a late night talkshow out of the past 8 years. Thoughts?

I saw the news clips, and he showed a good sense of timing with his jokes; and, I laughed at them.
