Anybody likes anime have any suggestions on a cute funny but not lame anime. I need something not too serious with lots of comic relief but still with a decent plot.

Anyone know what Slayers is like?

Nihou!

Slayers is kidiefied.

If you don't mind some gender-bending, try Ranma 1/2. Tenchi Muyo is good, depending on the series...try the OAV series. Stay the hells away from Gasaraki, it will suck you of the will to live. Lupin III/Rupan is good, but sorta 60's-ish. Maison Ikkoku is good if you like romance stories that go nowhere and are cute. Project A-Ko is ok, but a tad dated. Ultimate Teacher is slapstick funny for a story about a genetically engineered hybrid of a human and a cockroach who wants to teach high-school. Stay away from Go Nagai's sense of humor, it makes you bleed in ways that nobody should.

That's off the top of my head.

I found Slayers irritating, m'self. A friend recommended "The Irresponsible Captain Tyler" but I never saw it. Excel Saga is laden with references to Japanese culture and other animes. One of the cool things about the series is the vid-notes option that explains all these things. You have to keep remote in hand to keep up with them, but they add a lot to the series.

I like Final Fantasy Unlimited, it is light but with great animation, and the story is entertaining.

Also Project A-ko as stated before, only i don't hate it.
Its a good watch for the off the hook/humor value, just don't go into it expecting to make a lot of sense...

Robotech: The Macross Saga is always a classic.

36 episodes, just about anywhere will have it. I generally didn't like anime much, but Robotech sort of started the whole anime fad in the states, so it's worth picking up.

You can beat Robotech with your eyes closed. Evangelion, Vision of Escaflowne, Macross Plus

The reason we didt have decent versions of those anime with subtitles is because that jack ass Carl Masek fucking refused to release the copyright. O well at least they have them subbed now.

Robotech part one = Macross Super Dimensional Fortress
Robotech part three = Genesis Climber Mospeada

The second part was just lame anyway.

Nihou!

I agree Neon Genesis Evangelion is awesome, and I would have mentioned it, but I would hardly call Evangelion 'cute funny'... Especially the 'Death of Evangelion' movie, with all the Freudian symbology. Go get the DVD, and listen to the comentary, there's some interesting bits in there.

Personally, I'm a big Robots fan.

Oh please.
Come ON.
People adhering to Evangelion is like...
For once I'm finding a lack of words.

Go see Rah Xephon instead. They're basically the same except that the Rah Xephon crew knew their shit.

And the only Robotech worth watching in my book is Macross Saga.

Bowler
10-04-2003, 11:20 PM
Rah Xephon is seriously last week and its ONLY GOOD CAUSE ITS A RIP OFF OF EVANGELION!!!!!! Totally predictable and with 0 atmosphere.

I find it interesting that you like a horribly changed and badly dubbed Anime (Robotech Macross) but you dislike one of the most challanging and interesting Animes to be introduced (Evangelion)?

Even if you assume there is no intentional symbolism in Evangelion it transends itself and leaves room for hours of discussion and interpretation.

Like I said, they're basically the same. Think I've missed that somehow? *cough*

After watching Evangelion I ran around all psyched, digesting it all. I loved the thing, I fucking loved the thing, but you know what? Watching Rah Xephon simply made me go "so that's what Neon should've been like". The characters are a *lot* more thought through, not just "I love you dad why wont you love me!" and "check me out, I'm wicked cool, I'm five by five" (geek status admitted with that quote). Ohhh wait I forgot someone the... the... err, autonom? Zombie? Rei might be cool and interesting, but she's not nearly as deep as they could have made her. They threw away *so much* potential with her that at the end of the show I went "so what about rei?".

Neon may be "deeper" (read: fucked up, do not watch the 'ending' (loosely labelled, cramming three episodes of story after having almost nothing but stand-alones, and failing to finish the series off in the first pass doesn't count for much in my book) if you have homicidal tendencies (shooting for triple paranthesis!)) but Rah Xephon is much more consistent and thought through on the whole throughout the series. Whereas Neon could be ascribed as a burst of genious, Rah Xephon is the play derived from it. Hey to each is own I guess, but neon basically just screams "raw material" to me.

And hey pal, so sorry you consider my opinions "last week" ^^ Guess I'm not otaku enough to qualify into your little club. Well excuse me while I go cry me a river =)

Why do I like Robotech? Well it's fairly simple, my cognitive thought patterns are aligned around the idea that "holy fuck macross rules". Why is pretty simple, it was the first anime I ever watched and I have immense emotional happy-happy feelings wrapped around the word. That's why Robotech is Robotech, an adjective of its own. And hey for being fairly groundbreaking it's not that badly dubbed, or altered. Unless you count the pathetic american-added ending, which I personally credit as sewage.

Right! Those who hunt elves!
Now that's silly humor in a nutshell.
Synopsis, a karate freak, a gun-crazy schoolgirl and a world-renowned actress gets stranded in a fantasy world along with a japanese battle tank. Their goal? To strip as many elf maidens naked as they need to get home.

Bowler
10-05-2003, 12:35 AM
They threw away *so much* potential with her that at the end of the show I went "so what about rei?"

She merged with Lilith and caused the third impact after finally discovering that she could make her own choices!

I used to like Neon Genesis Evangelion, even after watching Death and Rebirth. However I hated "End of Evangelion" so much that I seriously would have given away the entire series free of charge to anyone willing to pay the postage cost. I still despise and hate End of Evangelion to no end, but I can tollerate the main series now. Death and Rebirth doesn't really add anything, but the recap of all the Angels with their names is nice - now I know where that came from. However, I don't even see how this could be considered a light comedy.

As for light comedy series, The Irresponsible Captain Tylor remains one of my favorites. I originally had it on VHS tape the bought the DVD set when that came out. I didn't care for the OVAs nearly as much as the TV series.

I not that crazy about Ranma 1/2. When you get to episode #254897389, you will see that the characters are still don't the same thing as they were doing in episode #1. Okay it doesn't go that high, but you get my point. I do like Inu-Yasha though. Sure it has characters doing the same thing and suffers from monster of the week syndrom, but it's weird thus why I like it.

If you don't mind Shojo (i.e. girl stuff), I would also recommend Magic Knight Rayearth 1 & 2 along with Chobits. Revolutionary Girl Utena also has its moments of comedy but the girl-girl overtones in it might offend the overly sensitive.

A side comment about Robotech, I did find it fun to watch. You will probably get far more out of it if you watched it when you were a kid thus giving it nostalga. That I watched far more of Star Blazers than Robotech growing up didn't keep me from watching the DVDs. The middle series is pretty weak though and can be easily skipped.

If you want to consider something more serious, I would go with the Vision of Escaflowne. While there are two versions: a TV series and a movie, I honestly prefer the TV series version way more. It's not just because there is more time to develop the characters, I also like the character designs better for the TV series.

My personal favorite anime is X, but it is very dark. Please do not watch the movie version, as it has nonexistant character development and a rushed story.

Kivorn
10-05-2003, 03:45 AM
Yeah she merged.
But it was like "meh". To me it felt like copping out on developing her character. An important and meaningful choice? Sure, but did she have to grow a brain in like the final fucking episode?
Merging, all fine and dandy, but the character went from zero to hundred in one episode and blazed by so much potential which is disappointing to say the least considering how intrumental she is to the show.

Death and Rebirth doesn't really add anything, but the recap of all the Angels with their names is nice - now I know where that came from.

Well, then you'd probably like to know, that the only main reason end of evangelion was even made, was because of the massive outcry of bitching over the series' end. So the director pretty much went totally crazy with the movie in reaction to all of it.

One thing you have to realize about Neon Genesis Evangelion, is that it's main point isn't related to robots fighting invaders at all, that's just the setting. I read a nice(but very, very long) article about the series a while ago:

Explaining Evangelion (http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/feature.php?id=14)

Even though it's definetly not for everyone, I find Neon Genesis Evangelion to be one of the finest anime series I've ever seen. And I loved the ending of End of evangelion too, once I got over the massive mindfuck that it was.

But what I really want to know is why it was brought up in a thread about cute anime? That's like Bringing up Natural Born Killers in a thread about family films.

I'm not flaming, are you flaming? 'Cause I'm not flaming ^^
I'm just having fun, can you tell I usually analyze and review stuff? =/

Most discussions tend to steer away from the immediate topic at hand. It's the nature of things. The other day my friend was telling me about his new portable mp3 player and thirty seconds later we were into a deep discussion about Bad Boys II, and we couldn't for the life of us remember how the hell we got there (later we deducted we were rerouted to it via a boob discussion, it's always about boobs aint it). But on a forum it's easy, just track it back thread by thread.

As for cute and funny anime, I still haven't seen anyone nominate any sillier anime (yes, it's funny too) than Dragonhalf so I'd say I'm still ahead ^^ 'course I'm generally wrong about these things. Nothing like thinking you're doing great and then getting a bloody knee to the solar plexus (thanks Sifu), see there I go again, tracking off.

Aaaanyways, Dragonhalf! And I strongly support the "Those who hunts elves" nomination for silly comical anime.

It's a negative word, yes. I don't think many consider "fanboy" to be a positive word either. On the other hand there's a lot of us "western" anime fans who've adopted the phrase as our own. My title used to read "Otaku gaijin", both of which can be used "insulting" or derogatory, but I don't take offense at either. Not like shinmai is a positive phrase either... or the extremely popular phrase "baka". Shit, if anyone says "baka" people just consider it cute behavior.
