Just thought I would start this thread to find other Star Trek fans. I could never see myself attending tons of conventions or learning Klingon, but I certainly think this genre of sci-fi deserves the attention if traditionally gets.
I absolutely love ST:TNG and its associated movies, and now thanks to online mail rentals I am enjoying little by little the entire ST:Voyager series. Some of the shows from both series are just so good and the acting is often stellar (at least to me). I never given Enterprise or DS9 much of a try but maybe sometime in the future.
I hope the new 2008 movie based on young Kirk and Spock turns out well, though I personally don't care much for the original series.
So what are your Trek thoughts/preferences, if any?

I am a big Star Trek fan actually :)
I loved TNG, Voyager, and DS9. And actually visited the sets of DS9 and Voyager a few times as i had family that worked in Visual Effects for Paramount Studios.
Can't wait for the new movie, and kinda sad that Trek is slowly dieing down :(

Have you ever been to the Star Trek:The Experience attraction at the Hilton in Vegas?
My favorite is DS9. I just liked the whole story line, the bad guys, the drama between the races.
I would consider myself a star trek fan :)

I've seen Brent Spiner, Jonathan Frakes, John DeLancie (Q) and Gates McFadden, met Nichelle Nichols and had an amusing chat with George Takei about the Shatner roast. I also keep up with Wil Wheaton's blog from time to time and really enjoyed TNG. I hope to check out the new movie -- I'd like to see Kirk beat the Kobayashi Maru scenario.

DS9 was probably my fave series, although Voyager (7 of 9 is a hawttie) ranks a close second.
I'll always have a special place in my heart for TNG and TOS.
Looking back at those series, you can really appriceate where the series wound up, technically and character development-wise.
Enterprise, was never really given a fair shake, I felt. It had a lot of potential, but some of the series' overtones were of situations we knew that had all ready been resolved in the current timeline AKA the Vulcans holding humans back from exploring, ect.
1 of my favorite parts of all the series was the Mirror Universe storyline, where familiar characters took on very unfamiliar personalities.
Yeah, I'm a Trek Geek.

Always been a trekkie fan! TOS and TNG will have a warm fuzzy place in my heart. DS9 and Voyager tooka little while to warm up to, but they got a lot better in the second and third seasons.
Enterprise had a tough break, imho, I thought thye did a good job with it, but since we knew most of the history already...
I actually had no idea there was a movie coming out this year, must now go and look for it.

I thought Enterprise started well, and honestly, now that I've gone back and watched most of them, it was a damn fine series. But, to be fair, it is people like me that probably killed the show. In my opinion, there is one almost unforgivable plot device: Time Travel (Terminator is one of the few that got away with it). And as soon as they introduced it, I quickly lost interest and stopped watching. Yes, sometimes you can get away with it from time to time ( like several Trek series have done ), but the Time War as the main overarching plot just killed the show for me. I'm glad later on they dropped it and ended up making a good series, but once I was lost, I didn't really pay that much attention anymore.

I'm a trek fan :D
TNG was probably my favorite and then DS:9
I had heard there was a movie and that the guy who plays Syler in Heroes is going to play Spock, or was that a TV series? Gosh, can't remember anyway he's going to play a Spock.
I have been to the thing at the Hilton, it was ok I guess. I did enjoy Quark's bar more though. I still have floating around somewhere in my office a picutre of me as a borg I got from the ride. If that's not Trek geek I dunno what is.

/sigh, now you have me in nostaligia mode.
TNG was my favorite edition, and I also have a favorite episode: From season 3, "Yesterday's Enterprise". Guinan (Whoopi's character) is the only one on the ship that is picking up that something is different in the present 'reality', and it brought Tasha Yar back, and alive. When Guinan reveals to Tasha that they really don't know each other, because Guinan came on board after Tasha had died a meaningless death, I had tears in my eyes. (Yeah, I am an old softie at heart)
Looking forward to the movie; tho' some have been better than others, of course, all have been worth seeing.

My fave TNG episode is 'Innerlight'. Picard gets zapped by an alien probe (!!) and wakes up on a planet that is slowly dying due to their sun going kablooie soon. Great, great episode and its from this episode that the little pipe instrument he plays occasionally originated.

Woot! Today I attended OmegaCon here in Birmingham, AL. I absolutely LOVED it.
Got to meet Peter Mayhew (Chewbacca), the imperial officer who Darth Vader choked in the meeting room on the Death Star (Episode IV), and many other interesting people and fellow nerds.
There was a noticeable lack of Star Trek material and presence at this convention, but it was a good mix of general fantasy and sci-fi. I also got to own an entire room in Call of Duty 4 for several matches (newbs!). =) I am planning on purchasing a custom-fit Star Trek uniform (TNG movie era) for myself for future conventions and maybe even Halloweens for years to come.

Okay so I've realized after watching more and more of the Voyager series and attending my first fantasy/sci-fi convention that I'm a little more of a trekkie than I originally thought (beware, this is a very nerdy post).
I have found a custom-design costume company at a website that appears to do EXCELLENT work with professional-quality costumes from famous movies and T.V. shows, including most eras of Star Trek (impressive pieces from Lord of the Rings as well, such as custom elven armor... amazing).
Here is the section of the site with the uniform I am interested in... you should take a look at some of their other work too:
http://www.shadowdalecreations.com/startrek_nemesis.htm
I am getting ready to dish out quite a bit for a "current" style Starfleet uniform (the one in First Contact, Insurrection, and Nemesis). Hopefully this will be a costume I can use for Halloweens and conventions for years to come as it seems to be as "real" as you can get, but I need a little "canon" advice.
I am probably getting one with a yellow department designation (engineering and security) since I can personally relate myself more to that division. I assume this means that I technically could not wear the pip pins designating myself as a captain, correct? The highest "rank" I could be would be a Lt. Commander or...?
Also, it appears to me that most actors in the movies are wearing jumpsuit style, one-piece uniforms, but the site offers two options: a one-piece jumpsuit or a separate jacket + pants uniform which interests me more for a number of reasons (the appropriately colored undershirt is in addition to both versions). Is the jacket/pants combo technically only for captains (I think I saw only Picard wearing a set like that in the movies) or could I consider it just a variant of the standard uniform?
Any nerdly trekkie advice anyone can offer would be greatly appreciated. I might just take this straight to the StarTrek.com forums.

I'd hit real Star Trek forums for, er, professional advice.
Also, if you were able to hit OmegaCon in AL, I recommend going to DragonCon (www.dragoncon.org). Last year featured Nichelle Nichols, John De Lancie, Gates McFadden, Brent Spiner, and Jonathan Frakes. I've met and/or seen George Takei, Marina Sirtis, Levar Burton and others there. So far, no big names are on the list, though Louise Fletcher (Kai Winn in Deep Space Nine but also Nurse Ratched in One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest) is currently schedule to appear, along with a lot of writers associated with books and the "New Voyages" thing.

How did I miss this post.
I am a total treker.
I remember watching reruns of the original on Saturday afternoons and laughing at the special effects, at the time I was a newly inaugurated Star Wars fan having watched the original movie the night it came out in theater.
By far my favourite is Next Generation with Voyager a close second.
Picard is tops in my books and I still today geekily use the phrase "make it so" and "engage".
My favourite episodes are (as mentioned previously) Inner Light and another episode called DARMOK (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Darmok).
"Darmok, and Jalad... at Tanagra"
"Shaka when the walls fell!"
I remember quite vividly watching the original movie in theater and the Wrath of Khan... KHAN!!!! For years later I always had to close my eyes when KHAN put his mind control bugs into those helmets and put them over the heads of Chekov and Terrel (a.k.a. - Captain character from the Darmok episode). Not to mention Ricardo Montalbán ALWAYS creeped me out from watching Fantasy Island (the plane, the PLANE!).
I was an avid watcher of Voyager and I was really happy the series came full circle in the end with the return of Voyager to earth, tied things off very nicely. My favorite episode from this series is called Blink of an Eye (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blink_of_an_Eye).
Plus 7-of-9 was nice eye candy to keep the treker geeks glued to the tube.
Its a great franchise and I hope they can continue to make movies and at most come up with an engaging new series that may rival the days of Next Generation.
Cheers,

Thanks for sharing Lokase! I too love TNG and Voyager. I will give DS9 a try sometime in the near future.
Isn't engineering and security red?
To my knowledge, at least since the beginning of TNG, red has been command/conn (pilot), yellow has represented security/engineering/ops, and blue/green has signified both medical and science officers. I am not sure why so many different departments share so many colors in the shows and movies, but I guess they wanted to avoid the bridge looking like a box of crayons /shrug =).
I would love to check out DragonCon. It looks like it is an older and better known convention, but unfortunately during the 2008 dates in Atlanta I will be on the road =/.
Keep the replies coming!

I believe in the original Star Trek you will see episodes of the uniform colors getting changed a lot. Kirk has worn blue, yellow and red.
In TNG, I am pretty sure Worf has been in both yellow and red, as well as command staff.
So, I am not sure there is a really hard and fast rule for color coding staff assignments.
As to the two-piece versus jumpsuit, I don't recall seeing any other than command staff ever taking off a separate jacket.

I currently have about 75-80% of the TNG and the original series on VHS. (Got a great deal in the 90's on these) Want to eventually get them all on DVD tho.
I do have the voyager series on DVD tho. (I loved the borg episodes, but Timeless is the one episode i really enjoyed)
For those interested, they do have the fan collections out on dvd that the viewers picked as their most favorite episodes. Most all can be found at amazon.com. (have most of them except for the picard collection so far)
Also, awhile back Deepdiscounts.com was selling the movies as a full set for about $40 on sale. Not sure what it is now, but worth a look if you don't have them.

I have been tentatively looking into buying one or two of the series on DVD (yeah there are some decent prices). Personally I might wait for hi-def though.
The entire original series can be watched on CBS.com for free (but not downloaded). Season 1 was released on HD-DVD but they will all probably be re-released on Blu-ray now (along with the other series later on).
So, I am not sure there is a really hard and fast rule for color coding staff assignments.
It seems only the original series changed around the color assignments. The reason Worf was in red during First Contact was because he had been beamed off of the Defiant (as its captain) during the Battle of Sector 001 with the Borg cube, and from what I have seen and now heard, all captains (since TNG) are in red despite their origins.
giena
03-18-2008, 08:24 PM
Technically, Red is the color of the Command staff. All officers who fall in to a command role will wear red. Captain of a vessel, XO etc etc etc. Blue is medical, Yellow is security and Engineering.
I've never understood why they lump Security and Engineering in the same color, although I'm sure there is an explanation out there somewhere.

Found this on memory-alpha.org
In the 23rd century (http://memory-alpha.org/en/wiki/23rd_century), the colors were red (tactical/engineering, also see Redshirt (http://memory-alpha.org/en/wiki/Redshirt)), yellow (command) and blue (science). By the late 24th century (http://memory-alpha.org/en/wiki/24th_century), the red and yellow colors had been reversed.

I believe this was due to the unionization and subsequent strike of the Local Red Shirts #127 who, noting the disproportionate losses accrued to red shirt wearing crewmen on interstellar voyages, negotiated a change in uniform in the year 2356.

"Spock, check around for lifeforms, Chekov, search for any trouble, Ensign Ricky, go search ahead and get out of sight for a minute, scream then die"
I do like how they redid the old series tho. (Was watching "Amok time" with the redone enterprise, planets and landscapes) Probably get it once they come out with a set of the redone series.
For those interested, they do have a 2-book set of what happens after voyager makes it to earth. Was kind of interesting imho and is good for those who are curious. (Found it on amazon under "Homecoming" for the first book. forgot the author tho so have to search)

I always thought they should have sone a series on the Borg, and the various cultures that have been assimilated, as well as the War in Fluidic Space with species 8472.
Sorry I couldn't have been more help on the Rank Question. I think that as a tech, you could never achieve the rank of Captain, as you would have had to go through Command Training, and your "job" became secondary to running the ship.
Just my opinion, and not drawn form any resources other than that.
BTW, one of my favorite Voyager episodes was when the EMH became the Emergency Command Captain.

The first mention of the ECH was in the episode "Tinker, tenor, doctor, spy" which is another one of my favorite Voyager episodes. Had another episode later on that had the doctor in command due to a passing through of an area too dangerous for unprotected humanoids.
What i'd REALLY like to see is a series of books on the history of the borg. Maybe have the first one be called "Borg:Beginnings", and could detail the lives or history of the first people to form the collective and the reasoning or story of why it happened in the first place.
Then have subsequent books detailing the expansion into space and so on up to the meetings with the federation/ Star Trek races. Wish i could write as i'd dearly love to do something like this...lol

Borg history and chronology would be a goldmine of movie scripts/plot lines.
Only problem would be most folks want a story with someone or something in the "good guy" role, that they can root for, and the Borg does not lend itself to that.

I think Borg vs. Alien would be even better. The Borg assimilate many Aliens, then non-assimilated Aliens give ex-Aliens a taste of their own facehugger medicine. Seeing a baby Alien break out of a Borglien would be pretty cool.

However, would the Borg even be considered decent Prey, by the Predators?

Personally I think a predator's ship would be easily assimilated, just like thousands of other species. The predator ship shown in one of the movies didn't look like anything that could resist a Borg cube or planet.

Anyway I found an excellent site on information about Star Trek uniforms from all eras and even alternate timelines. Very detailed. It also confirms the division colors on the uniforms, rank standards, and much more.
Take a look:
http://www.st-spike.org/index.html
I've also found out that the two-piece uniforms and one-piece jumpsuits (DS9 and TNG movie era) are standard variants for all crew members. Also a chief engineer can technically be about any officer rank (as it is an appointed position), but the highest most likely one is "Commander" (i.e. Commander Geordi LaForge later on in TNG's movies). Actual appointed Commanders of a ship are typically the official rank of "Commander" or "Captain".

Just thought I'd present another Trek tangent...
STAR TREK GAMES!!!
I have enjoyed Trek PC games for a few years now but have only recently begun to delve into what I've missed (or used to play):
Star Trek Voyager Elite Force - AWESOME FPS GAME! Came out around 2000 or so I think. Built on Quake 3 engine and to me at least seems ahead of its time. There's a ton of current mods and fan sites dedicated to it too. Cool story and awesome features and opportunities within the game. I played the downloadable demo (worth a look to anyone here) and then picked up the full version off of Ebay as an import since it's not sold in the US anymore.
There is also an Elite Force II with a storyline set just after Nemesis, but it's made by a different company and doesn't have the same canon feel to it (but it's still a decent action game, check out the demo for it too).
Star Trek Bridge Commander - arguably the best, most "realistic" flight-sim Trek game out there. Came out in 2003 and still has a rabid fan base, with tons of mods which add features, better graphics, and more. I played this actively back when it came out and have recently begun to reinvestigate and re-invent it with the thousands of mods available.
Star Trek Legacy - Came out around 2006. In all actuality quite a disappointment at least in terms of a starship flight-sim, but not enough to be discounted entirely. Worth a look as well, or at least a demo try. Fairly interesting story and the opportunity to play all the Star Trek timelines.
Anyone else have favorite Trek games? I know the Armada (1 & 2) games were wildly popular, but I've yet to truly try either of them, not to mention they can be a tad expensive to acquire secondhand (at least from what I've seen).
Engage!

A few weeks ago I finally reached the end of the Voyager series. As a whole I absolutely loved it and I think it makes a fine addition to all of the Star Trek series and movies out there.
The last episode was awesome and did a fair job of tying up loose ends and such (I could have handled more but things have to end somewhere). Janeway knows how to get her way!
In the near future I'd like to splurge/invest and purchase all or most of the Star Trek series and movies as complete sets. I don't know if it's worth waiting for them to be released on Blu-Ray... seems like the industry's transition from DVD is a slow one, especially since the hi-def battle ended (I still mourn the loss of HD-DVD, the rightful heir to the digital movie throne!)

I have about 75% of the original series and the TNG on VHS. (Got them a long time ago fairly cheap, and the entire Voyager series on DVD.)
As for games, they did have the 25th anniversary TNG game which i actually still have. Outdated graphics and gameplay but interesting nonetheless.
And if anyone is interested in what happens after Voyager made it home, they have a few books out. ("Homecoming" and "The distant shore" if i remember correctly) Ties up some more of the loose ends the finale didn't. I thought it was too abrupt myself. Would have been better if they had shown them landing on Earth and the aftermath.
