That was my thought too after seeing the trailer. Maybe you have to see it in 3D.

Space Marine goes native.... If it has to rely on 3d effects to be good and not a story line then i think I shall pass.

I will see it. I thought the trailer was okay. Nothing special but looks interesting. Cameron has made some of the best movies ever, so I will be giving him the benefit of the doubt.

The people who saw the screener clips said the 3D made it unbelievable. Not cheesy, in-your-face 3D stuff, but subtle attention to detail that makes it look almost real.

Better have a great story line is all im saying.. Seeing a movie just because some alien tosses a spear into the crowed does not impress me much.

Well I would think you'd be hard pressed to find a Cameron film that didn't have a great storyline. Aliens, Abyss, Terminator and Titanic were all amazing.
The trailer is on apple's site. http://www.apple.com/trailers/fox/avatar/

Like I said, the idea is that it's the exact opposite of that over-the-top type stuff.

Kelraz and I are in agreement for once. Most of his films have amazing stories in addition to visual effects.

Just make sure you've seen the Director's version of The Abyss, not the garbage that hit theaters. By far one of my favorite movies.
I just tracked down the trailer...looks very un-Cameron, but I'm looking forward to it. Cheesy or not, I love a good sci-fi movie.

Color me cautious on this one. On the one hand, James Cameron is awesome, on the other hand its sort of an odd story choice.

Gives you a bit more story behind it, apparently Cameron wrote this years ago but didn't have the CGI tech to make it then, so he had to wait.

Seems very, very cliche. Still might be cool, but nothing unique about the story, or mysterious about the trailer.

Pretty much the same as what I said to my son regarding the Final Fantasy movie; but, I nonetheless enjoyed the hell out of it because of the newness of the process. I may not be too enthused when all is said and done regarding the plot line and characters of this movie, but the creativity and technology will be what I am going to view it for anyway.

Go. Watch. It.
In 3D of course.
As dull as the story is ("bad humans, good aliens, bad human turns good, nature cool, bulldozers bad"), its simplicity serves one purpose : Let you enjoy the light show.
If you like Jurassic Park for its dinosaurs, you will love Avatar for Pandora. :)

Saw it in IMAX 3D last night... amazing.
Yes, the story has been told before, but I thoroughly enjoyed this telling.
It definitely sets a new bar for special effects. I was really worried about the uncanny valley since they natives were humanoid and completely CG, but I didn't really get that at all. It blended well, even when there were real humans in the scenes.

I was bothered by how human the natives were - very classic patriarchal Native American-ish society. I couldn't stop thinking of Dances with Wolves. I enjoyed the story, but the stock characters and plot dragged on after a while, and like too many movies lately it seemed to be made for a video game. Can you say boss fight at the end? Cute movie, but I don't think it will go down as a classic. Very impressive CGI and world though.

Dances with Aliens, 3D.
IMAX of it was awesome but that story was painful, I get the feeling Cameron had a ton of stuff he tried to shove in there with the whole biological-interchange network of trees and hair-brain-cables but couldn't get his head around editing out the robot on dinosaur action. For the length, the film felt surprisingly empty.

I haven't seen it yet - but as far as the story goes, Cameron said its just a modern re-telling of Pocahontas. Is that not really accurate?

Between the two Titanic was a much better film. At least it was still a tragically doomed love story. What Avatar most channeled was 1942 (yes, the arcade game) in which as you shot more pieces off the pistonpunk flying fortress, the evil overlord always emerged in yet a new smaller craft to continue the fight until at last you faced Robo-Hitler's brain in a cyborg tadpole swimming up the jetstream.
The triumph of this edifice was the robot Bowie knife. Because angry robot gonna cut a bitch!

I had a lot of fun watching it. While the story was pretty standard (unobtainium? really?) The world itself was gorgeous, the actors were solid (I really like the head of security) and the telling of the story was good enough to keep me interested.

I loved it. It took me a while to acclimatize to the 3d specs but once I did it was suh-weet! There were things I didnt like, for example the native-american feel to the nightelves. But on the whole I was wowed. I barely moved for the full 2.40.

Both the story and the effects.
As for the story, yes, it starts out as cliches. Speciffically, it starts out as the standard racist package of western colonialist worldview. But then it starts deconstructing some of the stereotypes, reformatting the whole package into something much more fitting our age.
And yes, the story do contain stuff we have seen before. Actually, it contains SO much stuff we have seen before that it's a total "fantasy kitchen sink". Sid Meier's Alpha Centauri, anyone?

IMO, what was most outstanding is how infrequently you noticed that the effects were as good as they are. You never consciously focus on the vast majority of detail that made the scenes so believable.

Sounds like Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within, in regards to the visuals.
The older scientist in that movie looked like a real person to me.
I'll still wait till this comes out on DVD to watch it, however. Story sounds like the typical; Humans = bad, anything else = good.

The visuals make it worth the theatrical viewing. About the only movies I'll see any more are the ones with strong visuals.

Watching this on DVD, even if you have a super nice home theater, would be a waste of money. The story just isn't that good. Watching it on a big screen in 3D is what this movie is all about.

i have to agree i made the trek to the theatre in my sling bc i kept hearing it is not something seeing at home would give justice to. go see it there, it is immersive and you won't regret it.
