- I dunno. It looks good, but why do they always put fucking Jolie in these bloody movies? She single handedly ruined Alexander (well, in conjunction with all the irish twats with blonde eyebrows) and has the acting skills of a wet fish. And what's with the friggin Romanian accent of hers?

Anywho, I'm not a mad fan of the CGI they're using here (Polar Express looked like crap) but it's nice to see a Beowulf movie. And Hopkins and Winstone? That's gotta be a winner.

Because Jolie, is hawt....
And sex sells....
I thought it was funny they made Grendel's mom look exactly like her.
Perhaps the movie makers were pining for more Laura Croft?
:D

I'm curious just to see how a director like Zemekis handles the movie, and why they'd ultimately choose CGI over live action.

Personally, I think most people go to the movies to see the characters and their relationships over special effects - those are the things that last in the mind. A movie like Lion King gets away with it because the focus isn't necessarily on the animation. These CGI films, like Polar Express or that bizarre Final Fantasy movie all seem to be about the shiny pictures and less about content. We'll see - I'll probably pay to see it in theaters though, which is unusual for me. Beowulf is a good story too, and it should be fun to see a movie based off of it.

The story of Beowulf and Grendel was one of my favorites when I was first gaining access to the library and all the books of myths and legends. I have not seen a movie yet that did the story justice, so I am hopeful. Beowulf & Grendel was a barely watchable attempt to tell the story, and the Lambert movie was a disaster for the concession stands.

As for the CGI, I can understand doing some effects for creatures, but doing the whole damn thing like that is more of a distraction than anything. I am not sure I will pay theatre prices to see this, and may just wait for the home version release. (I have a pretty good home theatre, so can still enjoy most stuff)

And to the question of Jolie, they probably could not get Cate Blanchett. ;)

I am still waiting for Tomb Raider 3, btw. Lara Croft makes for good fantasy!

I *really* liked "Eaters of the Dead" which was turned into the movie "The 13th Warrior", Michael Crichton's take on the Beowulf story. Highly recommend it to anyone!

I agree. I think some things are ok to be done in CGI but the whole movie makes it look really dumb. I'll still watch it though.

Is it just me, or is there more than a passing resemblance between these 2?

If Beowulf starts screaming "THIS IS SPARTA!" I'll pee myself laughing....

I think using the CGI is a good way to blend the human characters and non humans and special effects together better. It worked very well in and Final Fantasy.

Though we'll have to see, but I think they've fallen into the uncanny valley.

300 kicked ass, damned good cgi and kept the humans human.

13th Warrior was a fantastic movie. Had no idea it was loosely based on Beowulf. But it was generally the only role I've ever liked Banderas in.

Its not all that loosely based actually if you watch it again, its really rather close to the story line :) Crichton was dared by a colleage he couldn't make one of the "boring classics" exciting, so he did ... and sold lots of copies of it.

It just puts a more realistic spin on the tale. Instead of Grendel actually being a dragon, it was a band of savages promoting the myth that it was a fire dragon murdering and pillaging. And he added all the Arab in a strange land back story which obviously was missing from the original tale.

Is this movie about one of the greatest barbarian warriors ever to grace our server?
