What is the current top of the line FPS? For both graphics and gameplay? Aside from eq2 my wif loves a good FPS so I was going to get her one for x-mas. Thanks.

I really, really enjoyed the Half Life 2 saga. Its got HOURS upon HOURS of playability since there's so many games out by now - and I think most of them are bundled in the Orange Box which also has Team Fortress 2 for fun PVP.

For PC or console?
Gears of WAR 2 was recently released as was a new Call of Duty. I have not yet played GoW2 but I have heard it is the stuff! I'm still muttling thru Fallout3 when I look for something different besides WAR (which isn't often).

Call of Duty World at War is AMAZINGLY fun. It has the great things of CoD4, with the old school feel we all love about pre-modern warfare.

I'm still blasting away at CoD4 multiplayer almost daily. Haven't tried CoD5 yet, but I heard it was made by the peeps who made CoD3?
Anyway, CoD4 is always a good choice.

Its good man, CoD4 is a instant classic, but if you miss the old war stories and weapons its pretty good.
I have Gears of War 2 on Xbox and Call of duty 4 on PC.... Gears of War 2 is one of my all time favorites.... I love the story.
CoD4 was pretty good.
I have Cod world at war but am giving it to my kids for Christmas :)
So I will let you know later how it plays!

S.T.A.L.K.E.R. is an interesting FPS, and feels more like an MMO at times with the quest system and world zones, but creates a great environment.
If Gears of War 2 isn't on PC yet, the original is a good ride. I don't know about your budget, but I usually pick up games after they're around a year old or so. Crysis was fun, and offered more colors than the usual blah shooter as well as a sequel/expansion. Prey wasn't too bad either.

If you want a classic to go with a more recent game, I highly recommend System Shock 2 (which is apparently one of the influences for S.T.A.L.K.E.R.). Think FPS+survival horror in space, with some RPG-style character advancement. Good luck finding it though--_used_ copies are selling for $40.
Definitely grab it if you see it in a bargain bin, though--it's unlikely, but you never know. A friend of mine found a full boxed version (new!) for $20 that way 6 years ago.
(If you plan to run it under Vista: http://www.ttlg.com/forums/showthread.php?t=115545 )
