I want to install Win 98SE so I can play Final Fantasy 7 on PC. It won't work under XP (even with all the patches that are supposed to make it work).
What is the safest/cleanest way to do this without affecting the XP install I use for playing games? (XP is already installed/in use, no RAID or anything out of the ordinary) Computer has 2 physical drives with one empty.

Get a Playstation :)
No, seriously. Final Fantasy series are console games and the experience is greatly enhanced playing them on such.

LILO is a really good boot manager, but if you haven't messed with linux a lot, I wouldn't recommend it.

It's been a few years since I've used an multi-OS system, but I was using PartitionMagic at the time (Norton/Symantec) for a OS2 Warp 4/Win 95/Red Hat (linux) boot setup (these even have different file systems! :) ) and it worked just fine - it contains a boot manager to let you choose which you wish to at startup. Here is a link to their product:

There are also free trial versions available for download:

P.S. You've actually given me a kick in the rear to upgrade my present system. I've been staying with Win 98 out of sheer laziness, despite the limitations to RAM and other issues with it, precisely because I wanted to keep playing my older games that aren't recognized properly and won't play under XP (I occasionally boot up my old Dungeon Keeper, HOMM 2, and other games and gloat at Faervas, who can't play them anymore :) ).

I played FF7 on my XP machine a few months ago, and it worked ok. Try harder, before you go to all the trouble of setting up dual boot for it.

I got it to work on mine using the compatibility mode option, right click the main executable file for it, and hit preferences, should be the last tab on the right, then you can set it up for win98 compatability

What Elemak said. Oddly enough, that's fixed like 90% of my problems when using older games.

I use VMware with good results, of course LiLo and other options are cheaper.

I've been running in compatibility mode for the past week. It seems to be ok. :)

Have you tried compatibility modes?
My FF7 runs just fine under XP...
Find the shortcut that starts the game, and right click on it. Should be a setting for Compatibility. Run it under Windows 98 emulation. Could be a driver/hardware issue, but YRMY.

I may have missed Elemak's in the Boss coming, minimize, shuffle.
My point is, that I am able to run it without using compatibility mode. With XP!

Marz's last post (right before yours) was that he's been running it fine in compatibility mode for a week. :p

Someone send me the game, omg. I used to have it but I lost it or something and have yet to find it in stores again. Oh how I miss it so :(

You're missing a much better possible solution.
Virtual Machine :)
VMWare Workstation 4.5 (http://www.vmware.com/download/workstation.html) is a free-for-30-days-to-evaluate virtual machine emulator. It's better than, in my opinion, Microsoft's Virtual PC.
Most of what I blabber on about is doing package development for work. I test things all day. I make something, and then see what it does to a PC. Instead of screwing up the PC over and over again, and then having to re-ghost or re-install, I just press the REVERT button on VMWare and poof I'm back where I was 10 minutes ago when I made a snapshot of my system. Going to lunch? Press pause on your virtual machine :) Wanna play with Linux? Install 10 different linux virtual machines :) Want to simulate a domain environment? Get some extra memory and run a copy of Server 2003 minimized. Running 9x boxes can be done with as little as 64 megs of your physical memory with good performance.
If you're a geek at all, and haven't played with a recent copy of VMWare, you're missing out.
If you get extra geeky, you can start running GSX and ESX :)
EDIT: I missed Filden's post, but I'm leaving mine. I hope I convert a few of you who weren't up to speed on VMWare.

Only reason I don't run a linux box, with VMware for all my windows needs is because of the price tag on it =\ but otherwise it's The Shit!(tm)
