And worse than the US and South Africa?

The US was off the top ten in this list, with 466 violent crimes per 100,000 people. Less than half of even Canada's rate?
So much for all the fearmongering about firearms causing violence. Looks like even more evidence that disarming law abiding citizens only helps embolden the criminals.

Comparing crime between countries is very difficult to quantify:
Comparing crime rates between countries is difficult due to the differences in jurisprudence, reporting and crime classifications. National crime statistics are in reality statistics of only selected crime types. Data is collected through various surveying methods that have previously ranged between 15% and 100% coverage of the data. A 2001 Statistics Canada study concluded that comparisons with the U.S. on homicide rates were the most reliable. Comparison of rates for 6 lesser incident crimes considered possible but subject to more difficulty of interpretation. For example types of assaults receive different classifications and laws in Canada and the US making comparisons more difficult than homicides. At the time the U.S. crime of aggravated assault could be compared to the sum of three Canadian crimes (aggravated assault, assault with a weapon, and attempted murder). This comparison had a predicted bias that would inflate the Canadian numbers by only 0.1%. The study also concluded that directly comparing the 2 countries' reported total crime rate (i.e. total selected crimes) was "inappropriate" since the totals include the problem data sets as well as the usable sets.[6] (http://ayonae.com/#cite_note-statcan2001comp-5) For reasons like these homicides have been favored in international studies looking for predictors of crime rates (predictors like economic inequality (http://ayonae.com/wiki/Economic_inequality#Effects_of_inequality)).
Here is a good break down of gun violence across countries if you are interested:
http://www.guncontrol.ca/English/Home/Releases/GlobalGunEpidemicRev07.pdf
Of note in 2005 there were 658 homicides in Canada, only a third (222) being committed using firearms. That same year their were 14,860 homicides in the U.S., 10100 being committed using firearms. That a rate of 5x more between the two countries.
Look, I am not a stats expert by any means. All I know is that posting one small table of stats about Violent Crimes comes NO WHERE close to gaining an understaning into crime rates across one small region, let alone the world. There are so many factors and so many ways to twist the numbers that it seems almost impossible to have a clear understanding of the problem.
I do know that in general crime and mostly violent crime has been on the decline in both of our countries since the early 90's. Is that due to a better economic state? Better deterents? Who knows...

Canada's population is somewhere over 33 million, the US is nearly 10x that with 305 million. So with those statistics, that is 5x as many firearm deaths for 10x the population, meaning you're 50% less likely to be killed in a homicide in the United States than Canada.

Does anyone really think this thread is about those statistics?

Thats some pretty funny math.
Here is the blurb from the article:
The US gun death rates are far higher than other industrialized countries, and among the highest recorded in the world. 2005 statistics indicate that the US had 10,100 gun homicides compared to 222 in Canada. While Canada and the US have comparable rates of homicides without guns
(1.79 vs. 1.35 per 100 000), the US firearm homicide rate is 5 times Canada's (3.8 vs. 0.69 per 100 000) and the US handgun homicide rate is 7 times Canada's (2.83 vs. 0.39 per 100 000). The US also has 5.8 times the rates per 100,000 of robberies committed with firearms even though rates of robberies without guns are comparable.

Vel, you need to slow down. Halo did not post this; Sanchek did, which is exactly why I asked if anyone thought this thread was really about the statistics.
