View Full Version : Cameraman who got killed...

The camera and posture looks far too close to an RPG. If I was in a combat zone and and someone pointed this at me I would have shot back. As sad as his death is, it just goes to show how you shouldnt run around looking like a god damn militia zealot in a war zone.

This is what I thought about when I read that story.

Camera Man: Man I am so fucking good. I am going to win a fucking emmy or a pulitzer prize for this shit.

GIJoe: WTF, you guys see that? Some asshole is pointing some kind of shoulder mounted artillery at us.

Camera Man: Ladies will be sex0ring me while I gloat in triumph.

GIJoe: Let's fire bullets at him until he doesn't breathe anymore!

Camera Man: Oh Shit!

Moral of the Story? The shit people will do for a buck these days is amazing. I nominate this guy for a Darwin award.

Every soldier that carries a gun can be shot, yet you respect and honor he/she who is falen.
Now a camera man is risking his life and dies ,... and you mock him.

Nice to see you enjoy to watch a person die to provide you news ... The guy deserves a medal for what he did in his past .. not people like you disrespecting him yet wanting to watch all the images on CNN when the shit goes down.

The guy deserves a medal for what he did in his past ..

Does he? Does the media even belong in a free fire zone? Because the fact of the matter is, if you are in a combat zone, you might get shot. He knew where he was, and what he was doing. At that point in time, it becomes an accepted job risk: like getting into a fatal crash if you are a truck driver.

It is unfortunate that he died, but I don't think anyone should be surprised, shocked or blamed.

But I feel if I want to read news about what is going on then I should respect the people who are willing to die to bring me that news.

I tend not to pay much attention to the battles oversees, but this one hit a special note with me after watching a show on these cameramen and what they do with this footage.

You know all those reality cop shows on tv? Worlds stupidest criminals and such?

These people sit in a car with a scanner and wait for a call to come across the radio then race to the scene of a crime, endangering themselves, the officers, and civilians by possibly drawing fire like they did in this incident.

They travel across the continents to Hot Locations, to film this footage and sell it to news companies as a Freelance Reporter/Photographer.

When filming wildlife, in most cases, they use a very large mm lens to stay away from the lions they are filming. Why do they do this? Because their asses could get mauled or eaten if they step inside of an animals territory.

This guy put himself in the lions den.

ViBeSJoKeR

Dart I 100% agree...
But it is us .. the public, who are watching the shows and often loving it.

That is why they do it .. it is their way of making a living, their way of getting a kick out if it and/or life.

That does not mean it allows us to tell him he was a moron for going there because it is us who want him to be there so we can watch it on the tele ...

Anyway .. people love to step on others because they themselfes have nothing to show for their lifes ... it's how the world goes about these things I guess.

No logic there, dude. You seem to be saying that we can't call him a moron because either we watch him on TV, or he chose to be a cameraman.

U.S. Soldiers make a living doing what they do, some get a kick out of it and/or life, and yet you still find it ok to mock them for following the orders of a man you don't know, in a country you don't live in and mock them for doing so. So I'm failing to see your point on this one as it is apparent you are trying to pick and choose what you think is right and declare it as the word of god.

I'm not an asshole that's happy he died or anything, it sucks, but honestly.....If I see a guy in army clothing and helmet running around with that hoisted up on his shoulder, I wouldnt think twice before I open fire on his ass, it's just not a chance I would take, "Oh, is that a gun or a camera.....let me get a little close and find out!"...no :( .

Guy was probably running around making gun sound effects and running up to dead bodies yelling "GOTCHA SUCKER!" and thought it was a fun time untill he got shot :( .

It is very sad to see a camera man being shot, while trying to provide us all with news.

Noone has yet mentioned the fact that this is a "media" war. Most of the journalists in the combat zone are there on invitation off or under the protection of the US millitary.
They are there to provide the US media with story's and pictures of the war.
I say US media because stations like all jazia (or whatever that arabic news station is called) and several european news agency's (from france/germany) are not welcome.
Only the news stations that have expressed their support to this war are granted the protection of the US millitary.
This means IMO that the news they bring is not impartial.

In short :
If you say you support the US millitary, you cannot support their opponents.
Subsequently this means that if you say you support the US millitary you can not be an impartial news provider.

I think that in granting a select group of journalists access to the battle-field you are to a certain level responsible for their safety.
If the journalist is in a location where he is allowed to film (permission granted by the US army), the soldiers who are there should allow him to film and be aware of the fact that there can be a camera man there.
I believe that by giving the journalist permission to film there, the US military is to a certain extend responsible for his safety (if the journalist is not breaking any agreements that is).

However can you really trust the media?
They will say and do practicly anything for a good Story/picture.
Maybe this guy was at a place they did not want him to be and making pictures they did not want him to show and then was "accidently" shot?
Or maybe it was just a case of a tired GI-joe mistaking his camera for a rocket-launcher?
I'm afraid we will never find out the truth for sure.
I am however sure the official story will be that it was an accident, that was mostly the journalists fault.

I agree that the media does not belong in a free fire zone, but as I stated above he was there with the permission of the US army.
By granting that permission you are IMO to a certain extend responsible for the safety of the people you grant permission to.
He was not killed by terrorist or any opposing faction.
He was killed by a US soldier while filming at a routine traffic control (this is what i heard as off late, insights might have changed on this point by now)

I think I could pretty safely say that you call G.W. Bush a moron even though you watch him on TV and he chose to be President.

Doesn't everyone call G.W. Bush a moron? (retorical question)
It was my impression that 49.9% of the US-people ellected him to be president. I don't think you can call it his choice.
It was his choise to run for office, it was the choise of 49.9% of the US constituency to ellect him to be president. (I comfort myself in the knowledge that 50.1% of the us constituency voted for his opponent).

You're arguing with Eurotrash on the principals of logic.

Agreed.
To be able to argue on the principals of logic, you must first be able to grasp them yourself.
As of yet I have not seen any evidence of that.
Therefor I think it would be wise for you to refrain from any discussion regarding this subject.

I hope I made myself clear here. If not I'll pull a Ytrok and start twisting my words around and say that I meant something else.

What happened to this guy is a tragedy. An unfortunate acciedent.
But.. at the same time.. 1 out of every 20 King Crab fishermen in Alaska die every year.. Does that make them heros? No.
It makes them Brave.. maybe even foolish and willing to risk their lives for a buck.
He felt there was an acceptable risk to put himself in a dangerous situation to make money.. the dice rolled wrong.

But it is not even CLOSE to accurate to compare this man dying to a Solider in the line of Duty or a Police or Fireman..
There is a difference.. Duty > Profit.

A Solider who dies is a hero for a reason..
It is attempt to Protect and Preserve what we as a society have built up and created and maintained for the last 10,000 years..
We have crawled our way out of the caves and into spawling metropolis that stretch for miles..
Every generation builds on the next, and we stand on the shoulders of those who came before us, and serve as a foundation for those that follow.
It is the most precious thing we have.. and a thing that some forces if left unchecked would destroy in a heartbeat..
Replace Order with Chaos.. Replace Justice with Brutality and Replace Freedom with Tyranny.

People who become soliders do so to Protect.. to allow the rest of us to continue to create and prosper.

in 1944 Americans, British and Canadians did not run back into the ocean on a beach in Normandy in the face of Machine Guns because they believed this..

In 2001 Firemen and Policemen ran up dozens of flights of stairs in a Skyscraper Inferno because they believed this.

There is evil in this world, and even if you dont believe it, you should be thankful that there are people who DO and dedicate their lives.. and sometimes give their lives, in this struggle.

It is tragic when anyone dies over here. It really does not matter if it is a soldier, camaraman, or an innocent iraqi civilian that happens to be working at the UN building when a bomb goes off. Anytime I hear an explosion and the windows shudder, I pray that it is EOD setting off old ordinace. But, that is not always the case.

In defense of the soldier that shot the camaraman, I can relate to how he could have made the mistake. Anytime that I am traveling between sites, the "pucker factor" is extremely high. You never know what car parked on the side of the road, or what carcas of a dead animal is a bomb waiting to go off. Anytime you see a Iraqi pop around the corner (they do this because they hear you coming and want to sell something or just wave), you automatically swing your weapon to the ready. For anyone who has never been in a situation like this, it is hard to relate.

It is a matter of life and death. There are people here who want nothing more than to put a buller or a RPG into your backside. There is no amount of training that prepares you 100% for situations like this. Even after months of doing this everyday, I still get anxiety everytime I strap on my Kevlar and put on my flackjacket. When I load my weapon, I realize that today might be the day that I could take a life. I have never had to do it, and I thank God every day that I have not. But if it meant my life, or the life of my soldiers, I would not hesitate.

There are alot of true heroes that are over here, that have went home. But the homecoming was not joyous. One is a Senior NCO who gave his Vest to a private, and died when he was shot. That vest would have saved his life. He died taking care of a fellow soldier. That is a hero. Not someone who is getting a MILLION dollars for her life story.

I cannot wait for the day that I can log back into EQ and play. Not because I miss the game, but because that would mean that I safely got out of this hellhole called Iraq and back home to my family and friends. Until then..
