Since you are not from the US, I suspect you don't understand a crucial aspect of American culture/society. If the price of gas gets too high, the economy falters, voters get pissed every time they fill up the tank and Bush loses in November. Low gas prices are crucial to Bush and the whole theory that he is simply doing it to get control of Iraq's oil so the oil companies can make even more money just doesn't hold water. At least it doesn't if you assume Bush wants a second term.

Aside from that, I have to say I find your statement that what the US is getting is insignificant to what it deserves to be as hypocritical as anything else posted here. By your logic, every person living in a developed industrialized country deserves to be tortured and murdered by someone in a third world country. After all, every developed country "rapes" resources from weaker countries in order to enhance itself. But it's kind of the way everyone went around here. A small part of us Euro-trash fools (taino, ytrok, et al) spent the better part of 2 years saying the same thing over and over again: The reasons for going to war with Iraq were invalid.

Around the beginning of this year, most people seemed to finally realise - with the exception of the people in denial (akipt, mirdorr, et al, well not akipt I dont think, what with being a newbie) - that it was all bullshit, intentional or not. Though to his credit, the red faces are trying to fall back on the "Well Saddam wasn't a nice guy anyway!" card, while LL at least has the balls to turn around and say it's all bullshit. I'll plainly admit I was convinced he had WMDs at the time the war started. I'll also plainly admit he appears to have been bluffing and the war could have waited a while longer. But I'll also state that I think war was inevitable as long as Saddam was in control of Iraq. I still believe (and even the UN inspectors admit) that Saddam was poised to reconstitute all his programs the day sanctions were lifted. Once he had his WMDs in hand and his military in shape again, there is no doubt in my mind he would re-invade Kuwait and probably S.A and Jordan as well. He pretty much declared that was his intention in writings that were captured after the war.

Bottom line is yeah, the excuse used to invade was invalid but it would have had to been done later at greater expense if the US had not invaded when it did. Picture a North Korea except with oil to finance it's military adventures. Just my opinion.
