The sound that repels troublemakers

A device emitting a soundwave which is designed to drive young troublemakers away from a problem area of Swindon has been hailed as a success. Listen to the sound online.

I found this on the EQ2 forums and the poster there made mention that some kids are using it for ring tones to get away with having cell phones in class, etc. At the bottom of the page is a link to the sound, I can't hear a FREAKING thing :( I turned it up full blast too. I do hear the kids laughing but that is all. I suffer a little bit of hearing loss, thanks to the Army :(

Can you hear it?

I can hear it... It's saying in a little girl's voice '1, 2 Freddies coming for you; 3, 4 better lock the door...' HEHE

Edit: It does say that the sound is more annoying the longer you listen to it. I'm wondering if the sounds they are hearing makes them think that others are in the area, hence the drop in crime rates. May work in the short term, but maybe long term would be something else. Sounds like a fun idea to see if it works.

I also heard the thing about kids using it for ringtones, but I've also read that it's not feasible. Given the state of my hearing, I'd be lucky to notice a ringtone of clusterbombs.

I heard about this on the radio as an available ring tone, packaged as something your teacher can't hear. I'm about five seconds away from buying a cell phone jammer for my classroom anyway...grrr...damn kids.

I've got better hearing than most of them though, bet I can hear the frequency. No sound on this computer though.

There's a "clicking" but that's all I heard.
Granted I've got constant ringing in my ears, but I can pick up most sounds.
And you can't jam cell phones Kan, it's against the FCC regulations.
=P

From the people's description who said they "heard" it....it supposedly sounds like a high pitched chirping and buzzing. I'm just deaf to certain pitches :(

Hell, they even played it on my morning radio show today as they were discussing the article and how kids are trying to dupe teachers with it.

I think every school should institute a policy like my school district does. If you're seen with it on school grounds whether it's on or off it goes bye bye and you can't get it back till the end of the year. Yeah, some Mom's and Dad's don't like it and they raise all sorts of hell but thankfully we have a Super who doesn't take crap from parents....I hate him and I like him. I hear all sorts of stories from the kid about what other kids do and what some parents do. God, I'm constantly amazed.

I hear it but it wasn't till the 3rd or 4th time that I noticed just how irritating it was.

I know you can't jam cell phones. But I hate them soooo much, I'm inching closer and closer to buying a little pocket unit. No one would ever know....except all of you...damnit! Actually I'm hoping the FCC will soon allow them in businesses, and we'll start seeing them in restaurants, movie theaters, churches, etc.

I think every school should institute a policy like my school district does. If you're seen with it on school grounds whether it's on or off it goes bye bye and you can't get it back till the end of the year. You mean cell phones? Wow I'd love that. I have almost half a page of dire threats in my syllabus for next year regarding cell phones, but our district super and lawyers apparently said we're not allowed to confiscate them until the end of the year.

Yep cell phones, game boys, etc. They have it in their rules and for some reason they can do it in my district. I wonder what law prevents it. Curious.

I think I got a little excited reading your post...

No law, just the local crew scared to death some parent might complain or sue. They bring in the district lawyers in just about every major disciplinary situation.

Unless you mean cell phone jamming, which the FCC has clearly stated it is illegal to interfere with communications. Damn laws.

I was referring to taking them away. That's too bad really that the district is scared of parents. Sadly, I think allot of places suffer that problem :( GL though.

Oh I have a great system to deal with it, I just have to do it in classroom unfortunately.

The whole cell phone thing has gotten way out of control, it's the perfect example of technology outpacing culture. CNN had an article a month or so back about the New York schools banning cell phones, and it turned into a giant circus with even parents screaming that their students needed to have a phone. I've been lucky - in all the phones I confiscate I've only had one parent yell at me for not letting the kid take the parent's call during class.

Companies advertising ringtones that teacher's can't hear - which is how I heard of this - is just another sign of how bad the problem is. I love the commercials I see on TV where some parent is complaining about how high their kid's overages are. Um, don't give your kid a phone? Make them pay the bill? Social responsibility?

Maybe we need classes on cell phones and cell phone etiquette. Like, don't shout into yours at the top of your lungs in a fancy restaurant? The people in the front row of the movie theater don't care what the guy in the back is talking about? My favorite was in the middle of a church service a phone rang during prayer. The girl answers, "Hello? I can't talk right now, we're praying." Boyfriend is hissing at her to shut up. "Sure we can do lunch later. Yeah. Did I tell you about....blah blah blah."

Had a set of cell phones for my son and I last year this time. After extensive overages and discovering how wrapped up in a phone call my son can get I cancelled both of them.

Suprising thing is, neither he nor I miss the phones at all.

Truth is kids DON'T need the flipping things and neither do most adults. We're just sold a bill of goods claiming it makes our lives safer and keeps us in touch with the world.

I'm convinced folks need to simmah down naw!!!

Life isn't about being plugged in 24/7..

Can you hear me now?? no? GOOD!

But I've read news stories how they save people's lives.
Like when you are trapped in your car stuck in a snowdrift, and can call EMS so they can save you.
It can happen, I'm totally serial.

I have one cell phone and its a Verizon "pay as you go", I wont let my kids get cell phones and if they are going somewhere that they need to call me to pick them up I let them take mine.

I agree with Fandros...no need for a 24/7 wired life.

I also despise the Blackberry culture....just rubs me the wrong way.

I have a cell, my gf has a cell, the teenager has a cell, my gf's mom and dad have cells. We're all on friends and family and it works well when i'm out of town...no roaming, no long distance....just pick up the phone from where ever and call. Right now the kid is in Pensacola for the summer with her mom. She only uses the phone to call me or her grandmother and then only every couple of days. She's a good kid who's been lectured to hell and back and threatened too :D

Sometimes your job makes you have a 24/7 life like when you're on-call. Rather than be an obnoxious prick at a movie I just don't go places like that while I'm on-call. I wish to God others were respectful too :(

Cell phones are not evil, they can be improperly used but they do serve a purpose.

Fandros

oOOo they're evil alright. Just wait till the brain tumors begin to rear their ugly mishapen heads. Only to find out 20 years later that these tumors were a good thing!!

Let me guess Sixee... You have 2 cell phones and use the one to call the other just to get it to vibrate over and over again :D

My gf sent me a different sound bite with no background noise and I was actually able to hear that one......somewhat. Some people who heard it shrieked, others could faintly hear it (like me)....I wish we could upload small files here, I'd plop it up. It's only about 300k.
