Looks pretty sharp. /shrug.
Its a grocery getter and its American built. For a fair percentage of people who come to these boards, both of those = Epic Fail.
Best not to rely too heavily on people here to aid you on your buying decision. Just a note though, the Japanese and Koreans have been making these so called "Crossover SUV's" for years as their mainstay SUV sold to the global market and have for the most part mastered it. A diesil powered Toyota Landcruiser Prada is almost the only car you will find on the road in alot of the world outside of the most developed nations.

People seem to have so much trouble with the first model year of a new model, I'd avoid that route.
Have you looked at the Ford/Lincoln crossovers? They're similar, but have a few years under their belt to work the kinks out.

Not to obviously pimp the Toyota Prada, but its sold under the name of Prado everywhere else. We had a fleet of these in Africa, and all that ever happened to them after miles and miles of abuse on the dusty and boulder trials of Djibouti and Kenya was flat tires. We broke plenty of Humvees tho! They are tough as nails on or off the road and its too bad they are not sold as they are everywhere else in the States. Non US trim is basic interior (as in plastic floor, basic cloth seats), power nothing, 5 speed stick shift, diesel 4 cylinder. Perfect for a family car if you have young kids. Rugged and easy to clean. Perhaps they have a basic trim lvl for US sale but good chance since the Landcruiser is considered an upper lvl brand in the US, its not cheap.
As for what Sanchek said: Yah. First year run = buyer beware! Hopefully it has a good service plan but since GM is hovering on the brink of being bankrupt....well.....
Good luck with that!

That Traverse looks eerily similar to a newer-model Toyota RAV4.
I drive a 4WD 2008 CR-V EX and absolutely love it... perfect mix of car and SUV (yeah, a crossover then), and great gas mileage. On a cross country trip (mostly across the southern and desert belt of the US) I got an average of 28.1 MPG in 2,400 miles.

It looks nice, but for anywhere between 5-15,000 less you can get an import that is probably going to smoke it in reliability and gas economy. Oh and have more nice features, like Nav, sound system etc. And the fact they don't brag about the MPG on the main part of the web page is concerning.
But not bad looking.
Not to pimp Suzuki some more but...

I'm not super concerned about the Gas mpg. (I know it flucuates but gas is 2.12/gallon here) I do have three boys that a tote around. I also can put my bike straight into the back of my expedition. However that may change since the new expeditions have the fold away seat.... which I suspect will take at least *some* floor to roof height, and I don't have much room to spare. So I may just have to get a rack now.... and if I had to get a rack I may as well get something smaller.
I really like the expedition but it sucks when you go to the mall or someplace that requires tight parking.

I'd get a hitch and bike mount, less drag and you don't look like a douche with bikes on your roof. And you can get a small trailer for camping etc etc. And then depending on how small you might go there are even better options. My car is a parking spot stealing ninja :) But it's prolly be too small for your needs. I'd go with a Honda CRV, or maybe a Nissan Rogue or Murano

I would avoid buying a new GM right now. Since they are hovering on the brink of bankruptcy, and will most likely have to file for bankruptcy in the next quarter or two, no one knows exactly what to expect out of their warranties. Add into the mix that this is a new model vehicle and the inherent issues during a new model roll out, I'd avoid buying one of these like the plague.
Overall quality wise, Ford and GM are catching up/on par with Japanese/Korean imports now in many models. Chrysler, not so much.

Since my wife and I are about to have another child( a boy). We need a bigger vehicle to haul everyone around. I too have been looking into the Traverse. I have had first year models from Chevy recently(3 in last 5 years) and I have never had any real big issue with them.
Chevy has really stepped up its design over the last few years starting with the Malibu and I really like thier line up. Hell the new Chevy Silverado with the varying cylinder design can get up to 25mpg out of a V8.

After owning only Ford and GMs vehicles for 10+yrs. I switched to Toyota in 2003 and have never been happier. I will never buy a Ford or GM car/truck/SUV again. Toyota doesn't just make quality vehicles they build a customer relationship with you that transcends ownership.

I own a GM truck and will keep with GM until I buy my first lemon from them.
That being said I worked for the Toyota division of my old company for years. Being in Project management at the time I was constantly amazed, and yes annoyed at times, with their attention to detail and quality.
So if I'm not buying GM I will assuredly buy Toyota and feel assured that the truck will run long past it's warranty.

I've owned Dodge vehicles for about 8 years now, and have no complaints about them (Other than the MPG of my Dakota).

Just purchased a Subaru Outback this year and I could not be happier. Incredible gas mileage, 8 million air bags, and AWD. Best crash protection in its class. Handles like a dream. Just awesome.
Although it has more room than you might think, it does benefit from a luggage box.
My buddy has an Outback. He also has one less kid than me... I liked it but it was just a bit small... I think that is a good 2nd tier choice for me.
ALso, Just filled up my Exped for $2.02 a gallon :)
Gas is really dropping.

If it follows past elections gas prices should be on the rise soon. Of course that's mere speculation and with the publics lack of tolerance when it comes to oil speclators perhaps we'll be spared this year.

I had a couple Cub coupons totaling 16cents off at Holiday gas, and I filled up the other day for $1.78 a gallon! :D Gas was $1.94, which alone would have been great, but to get it even cheaper was sweet!
Anyway, I own a 2005 Saturn VUE, and have had no complaints about the vehicle or how I am treated when I go in for oil changes/service evey 3000. I drove it out to Richmond, Michigan for the Lost Fires gathering a couple years back and gas mileage was between 26-28. I am quite pleased with it.
When I am ready for a new vehicle, if I am unable to stick with Saturn (I am really tempted by the Skye) I may also go Toyota both for the reputation of their product and also for the way they invest some of their profits into things like alternative energy and rain forest conservation, as well as other ecological projects. I like that side of them, almost more than their cars, heh.

We have an 05 Chevy Tahoe and an 05 Acura TL. Wouldnt trade either of them for the world. The Tahoe takes a beating with us tromping the little one all over the place and its just so damned comfy to drive.
The Acura is great to drive into town on date nights, but hard on the backside for long drives.
Like others are saying though, I would never buy a first year model.

We're at almost $.30 off a gallon at Giant and we've already got our free Turkey coupon too :D I love that about grocery stores now days. I know in the long run I'm paying for it some how but the way we coupon clip and bargain shop it doesn't fee like it :D

Do you think the $4/gallon gas was just a fluke and that having a gas guzzler is a smart long-term plan?

It was a complete fluke...$5.-$6 was more where it was headed.
I can afford to drive an SUV .... I can afford to buy a rice burner too if need be. Most people can't but for me it's just a bonus to have cheap gas. I don't usually ever look at the price with the exception of the station near my house.
Is it a good idea for the average person living from paycheck to paycheck...prolly not.
That being said I do think when people stopped buying gas the price went down. And by that I mean curbing their driving habits.
Many of us on this board don't need MOST of the things we buy. We just want them.

Demand went down 4% and price went down 75% on a market at scale? No.
All I see is demand wend down and price went down....
