That's a bit disconcerting.

There was a similar incident a few months ago, though not quite as brazen. And this episode only represents what we're aware of; it's quite possible that the Chinese have had other successes in this regard. Nice of them to let us know.

Unlikely it sneaked into the middle of the exercise... Was probably there all along idling silently.

Major coup for the Chinese though if any part of this is true.

Brazen.
However, I agree nice of them to let us know what they're capable of.

Did they open the hatches and yell "SUPPLIES!!!!"?
:D
I agree, it's unlikely it slipped past all those ships designed to be on the look out for it.
1 of the oldest tricks in the book for sub commanders is to "go dead" in the water, and let your foe pass you by.

If the US has let this part of its defense for its carriers lapse, it is indeed a grave error.

Good think Al Quadia doesn't have subs....yet.

The Chinese have just quite effectively told the U.S. to lighten up on it's posture as the world boss. If they can get that close to the Kittyhawk in the middle of a battle group, they can get close enough to our coast lines, and capital, to launch a strike.

This is a bit of a problem and I'm sure someone is going to be in early retirement due to it. It is likey a message to stay out of the Taiwan issue.

The sub was probably able to hide based on technology that was stolen from us and hopefully it will allow us to build something to counter it, unless of course we outsource the manufacturing to China.

What we need is a network of underwater satellites that will shoot down any sub before it can hurt us..... Sub Wars anyone?

I remember pictures taking from our aircraft of soviet trawlers ghosting us during our wargames when I was in the Navy.

I seem to remember there being bouyoes that picked up and transmitted submarine traffic scattered threw the ocean. U.S. sub tracking technology is pretty advanced and in my time of just a couple years ( plus 13 years or so now ) Im sure its improved greatly. Still to pop up of the bow must have given everyone the shits. Im sure general quarters was called and the captain had to set his Micholeb down to race to the bridge.

I think baring China getting involved with middle east affairs we have more to fear from there inferior yet cost effective products that can baby sit the kid or get you laid with the kids babysitter to be of more concern.
