define all of: decent, casual and newbie.

to elaborate, to what extent do you want each of these characteristics? decent i.e. able to raid effectively? casual i.e. raid every night but attendance not required, or raid maybe once a week as a guild. newbie as in what, velious? pre ele? time?

What would you raid at level 40?

When I was level 40 I remember raiding Guk and Permafrost. I was raiding since level 25 when we used to raid Mistmoore Castle. There are quite a few raid events that are in Luclin (the Grimling war, for one) designed for level 40ish people -- though I haven't done any of them since I was 60 when Luclin was released. Additionally around level 40 people can now start prepping for Naggy / Vox / Fear / Hate / Air / PoG since they will be easily beatable with the current standard of gear for a large group of level 45s.

I imagine thats better than belittling people for trying to experience a game at their own rate.

You two quit bickering. Kiss and make up.

Mars, how is your photography going? Yours and Tainos web sites were part of my inspiration to get off my ass and take a intro class. Took a class at my university on black and white photochemical before they get rid of em forever, and went and got myself a new Digital SLR and a half decent lens and started shooting.

Marz, you probably have plenty of options. Other then those that still toot their own horns here on this board about raiding achievements (R.I.P and F.O.D), most all guilds still in existance now are casual. Just take a week or two and get some levels. Guilds are eager for membership these days so most have dropped requirements down to the level of:

In order to join this guild you need:

1) To be breathing.
2) own a computer with a modem.
3) own a copy of the game.

Well, there are varying degrees of "casual".
I think there are several guilds progressing through the elementals, including at least one that is fairly close to reaching Time. I'm not sure if they'd count as "casual"; they just haven't progressed as far, and may not raid quite as often. There are also guilds that don't raid at all, and everything in between.

Very true. Spend any time in PoK and you see the mass recruitment.

Grab a few groups, meet some peeps. Tag along and learn who ya want to hang with.

Best way to find out where ya fit.

Well, even some casual guilds have stricter requirements these days. I'd still call VC a casual family guild (our raiding is 2 nights a week) and even we cant take people who arent elementally flagged already. We'd be more open to it if the backflagging didnt suck so hard.

uhmmm didnt sony make it so it wasnt as much of a pain to backflag .. or get rid of backflagging all together?

Once the guild is killing elemental gods, yes, killing the gods flags people for those zones. Valiant Crusaders may not be ready to do that quite yet.

Backflagging through PoP isn't nearly as bad as it used to be when PoP was first out.

But from what I gather it's still a pain.

The "catch" with Elemental Flagging is that if you're still in the elementals, you haven't killed the god for at least one zone that you're still raiding in, so you're pretty much v-flagging people in at least ONE zone, until you're giving out time flags.

I asked that very question myself and I was NOT pleased with the answer:

Tho I freely admit I come off as a whiny biatch in that thread (moreso than usual anyway)
