This weekend I went to see the Dali` exhibit (http://www.philamuseum.org/exhibitions/exhibits/dali/sp_ex/)at the Philadelphia Museum of Art and was blown away. If you're in the area, I highly recommend it. Up until Friday I knew very little of his work (just the more famous stuff), my girl friend is a graphic artist and really into this crap so when she asked me along I was like.... "umm ok, sure can I run up the steps and pump my fist in the air like Rocky?"

Seriously though, we must have spent the better part of 3hrs in there. I was "blown away". I think tickets are $20ish a head and they extended the exhibit until the end of the month. We went on a Friday afternoon and it was very crowded so expect some lines.

On another note, this guy had some major demons.

If the exhibit would travel to Milwaukee I wold most likely see it. If you liked his wierd paintings you might like this guy as well. Hieronymu Bosh and his painting Garden of Eartly Delights has a lot going on with in it. They are both insane artists!

I don't know if "like" is the word I would use to describe my feelings. Some of his paintings were deep, dark, and thought provoking. I think more than anything else I was just amazed and for lack of a better phrase blown away. A few stick in my mind, there was a really cool work that was 2 paintings of christ on the cross side by side but when viewed through 3D glasses gave a different picture. But then around the corner was what I would describe a pedophile's dream... I will leave it at that.

The clarity and detail was just astounding. He was incredibly detailed even with objects that weren't real. I found myself glancing at a picture and then looking closer and closer discovering different parts that weren't there at first glance. The one with all morphed objects was incredible. And this all took place from 1920ish to 1980ish. Just amazing.

Thanks for the info, Fildien! If it's not too much trouble, was there anything on the literature associated with the exhibit which indicated where else in the US, if anywhere, the exhibit is travelling? I'd be interested in seeing this but would be more likely to be able to go if it managed to make it to the Kimbell in Ft. Worth, or to Houston or Chicago (i.e. places that I actually travel to).

Regards,
Nydia

Nydia,

I will check my brochure and the other hand outs we got. Other than that, did the website mention anything? I'll see what I can find out, it's certainly worth every penny of the $20.00.

Is it the same exhibit that used to be in Florida? (Tallahassee, I think)

Unless something has changed since I went to the exhibit a couple weeks back, Philadelphia is the only place in the U.S. that gets this exhibit. It was also in one place in Europe before this, but I think all the artwork goes back to its normal places after it finishes here.

And the art is just amazing - you can see Dali's style change and evolve through the decades. Plus he paints wild images from his subconscious in almost disturbing detail. Though I actually liked one of his more conventional pieces the most (Figure at a Window - 1925).

Highly recommended, even if you know nothing about art or Dali (like me).
