agreed. Its good to see someone in this era play the way he has. It's still very weird to hear that he has passed records held by players like Gehrig and Mantle...

The only weird part of that is that it took as long as it did to beat their records. Huge advancements in medicine (arthroscopic or laser surgery, prevalence of MRI machines, Tommy John surgery, etc.), nutrition, personal training, the easing up on the schedule (the seasons used to have on average 40+ double headers per season, now you're lucky if you see one), video analysis as well as field side handheld computers, the Japanese and Hispanic influence to the game (find a MLB team without a Dominican on it now a days, for example) and even the change from ash to maple bats have all changed the landscape so much its a wonder some of the old records have lasted as long as they have. Are there any other professional sports that compare in that regard?

Is there an * after his name or is he clean? I don't follow MLB much.

Tennis has quite a few long-standing records, like the grand slam, youngest career grand slam, and most consecutive majors. All the advances in medicine, equipment, etc only matter so much since you're facing off against someone who benefits equally from that stuff.

Science has benefited pitching as well as hitting.
There is no asterisk by Jeter's name, which makes it even more impressive imho

Spent my day at the Roger Clemens trial. I'm a wee bit skeptical about all of em, to be honest.

It's a great accomplishment no doubt, but it's sort of tainted at least for the near future because of him being a puss and not at least showing up at the All-Star game to at least tip his cap and get an applause.
He claimed exhaustion from trying to persue 3000 hits as to why he didn't go. Seriously Jeter? You had been out for weeks because of a minor injury (not saying he shouldn't have been on the DL, he should have been). You'd been back for less than a week to finish your pursuit of 3000. You HAD time off. Exhaustion is one lame-o excuse all things considered in this circumstance.
There were 5 people that were elected/voted to the All Star team that didn't show up. Two just had knee surgery (including Alex Rodriguez), so for them not to attend is more or less acceptable to reduce swelling and what not from flying. Four of the Five that didn't bother showing up were members of the Yankees. Mariano Rivera has an issue with his triceps currently. To that end though, Shane Victorino showed up because he felt obligated to because the fans voted him in. He showed up with a torn ligament in his thumb simply to tip his cap to the fans that voted him in.
Jeter should have done so as well. He didn't deserve to be an All-Star this year, but the fans voted him in because they love him. The decent thing to do would have been to make an appearance.

Taleren, I agree that he didn't have a deserving of an all star season, this year of last for that matter. However, you took the first thing you read as fact, it is not.
The Real Derek Jeter reason for missing the AL game (http://www.nypost.com/p/sports/yankees/jeter_calf_kept_me_out_of_all_star_g1WWURjgXwJmaBV mnxu0qO)
Couple of Quick quotes.
"What did I have? Physical and emotional exhaustion?" Jeter said before the Yankees' 16-7 loss to the Blue Jays last night at Rogers Centre. "That sounds like a good quote, but I told you guys Friday why I wasn't going. Physical and emotional exhaustion, that's a good story, but it was based strictly on the leg."
"It seemed to be a non-issue. I didn't hear a word about it until Tuesday," Jeter said. "I guess I was surprised. I understand the fans being disappointed, I get that. I enjoy the All-Star Game. This decision was what was best for our team in the second half."
Because Jeter didn't directly hear or read some players quotes that said players chosen to the All-Star Game should at least show up, he refused to comment.
"I never comment unless I have all the facts," Jeter said when told former Yankee Lance Berkman, who didn't use Jeter's name, said players should attend.
Jeter said he wasn't going to go to Phoenix just to tip his cap.
"If I went out there, I was going to play," Jeter said. "I was disappointed, but it was best for our team for the second half."
Jeter is a classy stand up guy. That's why he is such a cherished figure in sports.

Stand up classy guy? Sure most of the time, but the two things you quoted have what I would consider lies in them.
First, about the physical and emotional exhaustion...
It had been reported for days prior to Tuesday this was the reason he wasn't going to be there. In fact, that that was the reason claimed for him not to be there was acknowledged by Bud Selig (you know, only the commissioner for MLB). Jeter states after the fact it was because of his leg, but that quote was almost a week after it had been reported by people in the league, people with his team, players on his team, etc., that he was missing the game due to exhaustion.
To the second point...
There is NO WAY IN HELL that he didn't know about the uproar until Tuesday. I'll say that again, there's NO WAY IN HELL he didn't know it was a big deal until Tuesday. He lives in the media capital of the world. The commissioner of MLB commented on it Monday that he'd spoken to Jeter about it, and that he accepted Jeter's exhaustion (just because Selig accepted it doesn't mean the fans have to however). So... if Selig spoke to Jeter about it on Monday, Jeter is definitely lying if he said he hadn't heard a word about it until Tuesday.
Jeter is a class act most of the time. He wasn't here. This won't stick with him indefinitely, but currently it's still in the public's eye. The things that WILL stick with him is if he's going to try to lie his way out of it. People won't be so quick to forget lying.

Find me the quote where Jeter said he's too exhausted to play. Unless Bud Selig can produce a quote, then he is talking out of his bum.
Second part, it's your opinion. Truly, there is no way to prove or disprove it. History has shown, he has been a man of his word. If he said he didn't hear about it, maybe he didn't read the sports page. He might have other things going on that kept him preoccupied.
It's all speculation. Well, the first part isn't, it was false reporting.
