I figured this would be the best spot for this question. My Brother-in-law's birthday is coming up, and my sister wants to get him a digital camera for ~$250. As I know there are a lot of photo-gurus on this board, I thought I'd post here to see which one I should recommend. Neither she nor I know the slightest thing about digital cameras (megapixels, battery types, memory types, etc.) so relying on recommendations seems to be our best outlet here.

Any suggestions?

Elphs are awesome. Dunno what prices are, but you might find the 3.2 megapixel Canon Elph for around this price.

Go to steves-digicams.com. Read reviews.

I bought a Canon A70 recently for around 299 and its a wonderful camera for people who just wanna take pictures of vacations or friends etc. Its RIDICULOUSLY easy to use and at 3.2 mega pixels does great.

My whole family has been Canon freaks forever. They all use Canon film SLRs, and I use a Digital SLR.

Go Canon whatever you do. :evil

Another thumbs up for the Canon a70 and a80, personally I'm hoping for a good refund this year and will be snagging a EOS Digital Rebel 300. I say that as a Nikon nut, I love the Nikon Film SLRs but the 300D is just so amazing at that price point and Nikons answers to it dont even seem in the ballpark.

I use a 300D. The ability to use almost the entire line of EF lenses was reason enough. 1.6x lens conversion factor is a pain though.

The Nikon D70 looks very promising, though I hope it isn't over hyped like the Sony F828 was.

The problem is that the D70 is $300 more with the stock lens. And it doesnt have THAT much more that a non professional like me would get out of it (Tho the DOF preview would be nice, dont think the D300 has that), and my existing Nikon lenses arent that extensive in order to command me to wait. I could get the DRebel, the kit lens, the highly rated 50mm f1.8 lens for indoor shots and still have $200 for another wide angle or zoom lens if I thought I would use em.

I've got a month to go at least till my purchase, so we'll see what it looks like when real production units start popping up, but so far I'm not convinced.
