The Wife and I are looking for a new camera.

Are there any photo philes out there who can recommend a good solid, takes nice pics of the kids, Digital camera?

Looking at the Nikon D40 or the Canon Rebel Xsi.

The canon is more expensive, but is it worth it? Or will I be perfectly happy with the D40?

I really like my cheap little Olympus Stylus. Pocket sized, and I love the picture quality.

Go to a store where the batteries are in the cameras, and try taking some sample shots. Look especially for low light settings and action shots.

I have a rebel XTi and I love it. If you looking for point and shoot. I am a big fan of Sony Cybershot

I like Nikon myself, but I can't give you any technical reasoning beyond my personal experience and feelings.

Having tried both the Nikon and the Canon, Nikon's glass is a lot better and makes a better picture IMO. This isn't a point and click, you will need to read the manual: its a SLR with a lot of lens control and will make some amazing pictures. If you want something easy a point and click can do the trick, but it won't ever look as good.

(I'm buying a D40 soon after the holidays)

I have a D300 and I bought my kids the D40. The D40 is a good camera takes a nice picture and the interchangeable lenses make it a bit more fun than a point and shoot.

Like Kelraz said the Nikon glass is better than Canon and photography is all about the glass:)

I picked up the Nikon Coolpix for about $119 at Target back when I was looking to upgrade from my old 35mm film antique.

I think it works pretty good; I get good color and detail, with sharp images.

The dog is my Mother's Yorkie, and that is her wallpaper pic taken with the Nikon.
