Dear Faithful Users,
As the board system administrator, I apologize for the server downtime. However, there were issues beyond my control, some of which are very alarming. Sometime this weekend, our server was compromised. We are currently investigating, and I am not able to give out any details at this time except for the fact that we are investigating.
This server has been restored to the best backup we have. We will be working as quickly as possible to resolve this issue. If you have any tips as to who may be responsible for taking over the administrative user, please contact me by PM as quickly as possible. I will be putting up a tips database where you can forward us names of anyone who may be responsible.
A note to the offender: we have every IP address tracked. We will forward the results to Federal investigative agencies once we have determined the perpetrator.

Are you kidding? Message boards are a (Script Kiddie/Cracker) smorgasboard!
IP addresses, email addresses, passwords to toy with, AIM Names, and tons of other vital information. Just by getting all the email addresses on this board, they have a warm list of people interested in buying video games. hi2u referrer style emails.
Hackers aren't all bad. Hacking is a necessary tool for any Network Admin.
It's how you test and prevent unauthorized access to your network and work on intrusion detection. The company I work for has a team of professional hackers that do security audits on our Networks. It really pisses me off, when people do things of this nature, and make a bad name for the people who "hack" to make things better.
Any good Network Admin, is an even better Hacker.

Don't be stupid. You can get aim names and emails just by registering here, if that. The passwords used by message boards nowadays are one way encryption meaning they'd have to sit there and brute-force every single one. The only thing of worth in this message board, would be if anyone was stupid enough to PM their EQ login info to someone else. That is stored in plain text, and is also a very big cause of "hacking" attempts against accounts or whatever.
But seriously, it's not that hard to write a script to grab everyone's emails and aim usernames from here... without even "hacking" a server.

Any good Network Admin, is an even better Hacker.Thank you for your insightful comments, but we don't have anything close to the resources or funds necessary to contract a security team for a server that hosts a game server community board that produces zero revenue. We're doing the best we can with the free resources available; I hate to ask our staff to sacrifice their personal free time to investigate this very childish act.
It is highly regrettable when individuals with ill intent decide to interfere and disrupt the personal and business affairs of others. The internet was built on a system of protocols that function best in a climate of co-operation and benevolence. Thus, there are weaknesses in the protocols which are increasingly exploited by those without respect for the rights of others. We can't apologize for these people. Only they can take responsibility for what they do and maybe someday they'll GROW UP and understand the moral consequences of their actions. But we can apologize to our members for the interruption this has caused them, and we are sincere in our efforts to further bullet-proof our system as we learn from this experience and go forward.
I would like to add that whoever hacked our server has nothing to be proud about. If you are reading this, hacker, you are no more than a burglar.

Yeah, I know that. Don't mind me, I was just venting about people giving Network Security Analysts bad names.

Make the info public, everyone interested can help get info. This shit is fun.
