Ahhh the good ol' days. I Remember hunting in N ro, dorn was the scariest mob i had ever encountered (well WC hill giants too but I was too young for WC!) and hearing a triumphant scream..."Dorn you are mine" as some uber lvl 40 warrior came into zone to deal out his dmg. poor Carabella...mourning the loss of her baby Dorn.

Luvs ya babe

There were HGs in Nro when Xeck was there hunting at Derv3. I shouted about it and got many responses saying it was a pet. Meanwhile this "pet" killed two of my group while the rest scattered in all directions. Scariest of my newbie times.

*laughs and hugs Cyclone*

Ahh, those were the days. The game was so much fun then, I didn't have to worry about spending hours upon hours playing, I only played for myself, you know? No guild responsibilities, no "you must do x raid or be kicked from the guild" and no "If you don't put in 12098098134908 of your play hours doing guild stuff, *ominous voice* you *will* be removed."

What has happened to this game?

My best EQ times were in the very beginning.

The first time I logged in on my wizard, and had to find Opal Darkbriar for training. Seeing all the other PCs and just being astonished they were actually real. Hunting at the orc camps for belts. Taking a group into Befallen (Pre-nerf) for awesome exp, and many deaths. Hunting in Oasis and having people '/ooc SG at docks!'. Saving up plat forever just to afford my Cone of the Mystics. Arguing in LOIO. Being scared shitless running from FV to LOIO (Spiders > Me). Running across zones for crack. Running through EC tunnel inspecting all the people who were higher level than me. Taking the long journey to Qeynos from Freeport with my wizard friend. Getting drunk in Qeynos and falling off the gates. Exploiting the zone wall in Qeynos and gaining exp by nuking guards. (I didn't know!)

Best game I ever played, hands down.

Nothing beats hitting lvl8, casting invis, and setting off from Qeynos to Freeport for the very first time.
The times before you knew what a 'Zone wall' was and you thought there were no boundaries.
Now every zone is.. the space between a raid target.
/sigh

I concur... the early days truely were the best. By the end of my playing days, it was nothing but the exp grind. Hardly even anything scary anymore what with graveyards and 56+ or Epic clerics every which way. Sigh... Wheres that nostalgia thread...

I kinda hated the early days. Only a few friends, retards everywhere, losing my corpse 8 times a day. 8/

But then again, we always look back on our youth fondly. damn me and my cynicism.

I disagree. We didnt have 2/3/4/5/6 boxing before. Now it will be easy to self lvl with no help from others. You know the drill. We all know the drill.

It will be the same shit different day. FUCK eq2

Dunno - hear EQ2 is totally different play style, with no classes and all of that.

I kind of felt the mystery come back when they launched Luclin (though that lasted about, oh, a few days).

Best thing is to take breaks. Then when you come back, it is actually fun because you've not spent most of your life on the game.

all about running from Qeynos to Freeport at lvl 1 with no invis in the beggining only to die to the guards at the front for making a silly mistake! :lol watching your friends play in south karana while your trying to grind through lvl 18 and saving for months for the blacked Alloy Bastards Sword (babs) those were the fucking days. Nowadays its nothing like it was.

Best newb remind?

Falling in the bloody pit in BB, dieing from a horde of gnolls, wondering and sweating how I will get my corpse back, until this kind high level 11 wizard (I was only 9) came and dragged my corpse!! Never been so happy to get my iron back (yeah I was a twink at this time...). :D

Oh yeah. The run from Qeynos to Freeport, or vice versa, was frightening as a newbie. I had a blast back in those days. :)

I would have to say waiting in or being brave enough to run thru Kithicor was a real eye opener.

I made "the run" at level 5. I created a human druid and my friend created a human Paladin. He started in FP, I started in SureFall. When I hit level 5, I figured I'd try the run.

When I got to SK (yeah, I know... wrong way) a kind hearted cleric found me and guided me on foot, without sow, to Freeport, binding me at every point possible along the way. I'll never forget that cleric, though I can't for the life of me remember his name heh. It was back on the CT server... When I asked how I could repay him, he said that once I was higher level and had all of my "incredible" spells, to do the same for any newb I find. That is why I've always been more than willing to help out newbs, whether it is a free item here or there, a few buffs, a port, or even a guide somewhere...

Best event ever was getting my Fletching Kit ... I was going off in auction about someone selling a fletching kit and by god no one was... so I was like lvl 16 ( or so could have been 13 oh and I started as a Paladin) and I was with Le, Tain, Milyenu and Me running to get a Fletching kit .. I travelled all over, went on boats, and a friend guide us all the way to that odd tree we had to move up in .. and I was soo damn happy to accimplished my mission after like 2 hours of running.

Those were the days :)

my first char was a Wood Elf ranger? wtf? before i made Runno... my memories within Kelethin and the orcs.. Crushbone were nice, i remember when i went to kaladim and messed around in butcherblock and a druid gave me a SoW and i followed him to the docks.. my first time on a boat.. dang it was so cool! and then i got to freeport and i saw a monk.. logged my Ranger at lvl 11 made a Monk and never went back! Eventually started a cleric, and a Rogue later in life.. but My nice little newbie experiances were playing a ranger for my first month or so of EQ.

no game will ever be as good as eq was, once you break the mold you can never accomplish something like that.

i highly doubt any game will ever beat EQ's record, or fame, or for early game play at that matter, it was just too fun, i can bet you WoW won't do it, i'll play WoW just for the lore which is what i was really into, with war craft, when i played it to begin with.

same thing with any other game, except for first person shooters probably, quake 1/2 was awsome, doom kicked ass, wolfenstein etc. were all amazing ... and action strategy, once red alert came out action strategy games were the shit, companies were coming out with them left and right, i doubt i played another action strategy game as fun as C&C-Red Alert for pure game play, TA was awsome, and warcraft2 was probably the other closest but had some very lacking qualities (probably there being 1% difference between the races)

I remember with my first character, being talked into being a PK. Soon a I left the zone, some level 38 cleric gave me an emerald and told me being a PK was a bad idea.

Then I made Zehn, at the time a mage. Died in Tox and asked a lvl 50 necro to come find the corpse for me because I didn't want to lose my lantern. He told me to...and I quote, "Fuck off."

EQ hasn't been the same since.

hmm

my favorite newb moment: i just got a fine steel 2her, and visible bronze, then my guild leader asks me to transfer an FBSS, ghouldbane, crested mm shield, serp bracers, all this other shit, and guess what? HE GOT JACKED! no joke, his name was Balbanes on CT server, long ass time ago. The best part was, nothing was done. Rofl, although i got what i deserved, i became an EC whore and got sick of playing for a bit and my friend played my account, he played a prank on a mutual friend and took some of his gear, the mutual friend didn't know, reported and my acct was banned =/

lol, but it was so great, to steal all his items, i was in his guild for less than a day, WHAT A FREAKIN MORON! wu wu

having those uber items literally introduced me to a current friend of mine in RL. long story but doesn't matter

Stealing is wrong, and you were poorly raised if you don't realize that. No matter if you are 12 or 70 you should feel a sense of guilt over taking something that someone worked very hard for. Add in the lack of self respect you must have that makes you try to use it a badge of honor, "dude I was so cool I stole stuff haha that dude got ripped off!" and it is a sure sign of a mental disorder, or perhaps just deficiency.

It's not totally your fault, your parents probably just abused you or ignored you or something. I suggest seeing a psychiartrist, perhaps it will help.

the funny thing is, i was guilded with you at one point shash...but thats all done now (wasn't on tierfin)

one thing you seem to forget

people act much differently in game than they do in real life. It took me some time and a few RL gatherings to realize this. People can act mature and grown up in real life but can be fucken whiny loot whores in game. People can be honest in real life and be sneaks and cheats ingame. I have never stolen anything in real life that I can remember (none the less bragged about it) but in game I've ripped off many many people and I don't mind, its just a game, if you are saddened by this I think you need the theropy. Basically: Get over it.

Carabella Valenteen

I am pretty much, in game, what I am in real life.

Dunno where you get the idea that people are so different between the two worlds.

Tierfin
07-31-2003, 05:14 AM
considering how different my friends are ingame and RL, i can name people you prolly know that ive met in RL (maybe they didn't know i was tierfin or what not) that acted completely different...than they do ingame

Some people may be themselves, not arguing there...but some can be different

ThePerfectFlaw
07-31-2003, 05:24 AM
I know several people who are very different online from real life.

I don't blame him to be honest. I woulda done the same thing way back when. Until I joined CN, EQ was 'just a game' to me.

Heh... in 4+ years and 3 guilds I've probably been guilded with... oh 800 people or more. It's not surprising some were scumbags. Thankfully I've managed to keep myself in the company of the best of the best of the EQ community for the most part. Perhaps you'll surprise me and tell me that you were someone I respected... wouldn't bet on it though.

As for being upset about it... I'm not going to lose any sleep over it... but unsurprisingly I'd rather spend my evenings with nice, trustworthy people than children that go out of their way to fuck over others. I don't want thieves in my virtual community any more than I want a crack dealer in my RL neighborhood.

No. But if you are talking about something that is part of the game tactics, that's entirely different. I'm not crucifying the guy because he was pickpocketing fire opals in Sebilis.

But point taken, I am coming off like I got a big stick up my ass. I'll relinquish the soap box now. Who knows, maybe somethng I posted will make someone think twice about ripping someone else off.

when we all started this game, unless you were in beta, the simplest things amused you. if you were 13 or 14, and given a bunch of stuff to transfer for someone, and your RL uber friend was saying, "jack it!!! it's no biggy" you're going to side with your best friend. maybe not now, but in the early days you would. i am saying this from the adolescent point of view. i am not condoning any actions but i am simply stating, don't bash him, cause you would have done the same under the same circumstances. the adolescent brain works a little different then adults. your friend, who has more experience then you, tells you it's ok, then it must be!!

p.s. i miss making small fortunes in the EC tunnel, back when you could barter and make money and trades..... WTF HAPPENED TO TRADES?!
