View Full Version : Dover and Kansas

In Dover, PA, the 8 school board proponents of "Intelligent Design" were swept (http://www.yorkdispatch.com/local/ci_3196053?rss) out of office. Their replacements have relegated ID to comparative religion where it belongs (if it belongs anywhere). The Kitzmiller v DASD case is now over, and the judge plans to have a ruling by the end of the year.

Meanwhile, the Kansas state school board has once again voted (6-4) to accept (http://media3.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2005/11/08/AR2005110801211.html) ID into the school curriculum (though local school boards can decide for themselves). Further, the KBOE have redefined science to no longer be limited to naturalistic explanations.

I have to agree with one of the dissenters:
"This is a sad day, not only for Kansas kids, but for Kansas," said Janet Waugh, who voted against the new standards. "We're becoming a laughingstock, not only of the nation, but of the world."

Laughingstock of the world. Lady, the world doesn't revolve around you...get over yourself.

There are far odder habits/teachings in the US, let alone the rest of the world, then Intelligent Design. I myself find it a bit straw grasping, but I hardly think the world is gawking at Kansas and laughing....

Save the drama for yo mama...

Actually, the scientific world does laugh at Kansas. In 1999, the KBOE made a similar decision. In 2000, voters replaced the board with moderates. 2004 saw a return to dominance by fundies, and here we are again. Whatever those odder habits/teachings are that you have in the US, I find it unlikely that they come close to actually redefining the scientific method.

The scientific world laughs at it's community members on a regular basis. They laughed at Darwin at one time as well. ;P

The KBOE isn't part of the scientific community. It's supposed to make decisions based on the scientific community's best understanding of how the world works, but is shoving all that aside in favor of creationism's latest guise. This is akin to requiring schools to teach that lightning might be caused by invisible and angry Greek gods.

Oh, I agree Thor with your point. My point was solely making fun of the lady's statement.

Folks want to learn ID, imho , should go to Sunday School.

Holy crap Thor how did you know this? Dover is in my county (York) and this is definitely the buzz here but was expected honestly. Much like the Sup. Court Justices who may not keep their office due to their part in the sneaky midnight pay increase for the State Legislature that was not publicly announced.

I've been following the ID movement for years now, and this particular case since it began.

This link gives a more in depth story and some background stories too.

I hate my local news stations website though, they changed it recently.

Perhaps not very pertinent, but one of my favorite articles from The Onion: http://www.theonion.com/content/node/39512

Here are some of the proposed stickers for the textbooks in Kansas:

I wouldn't sweat it, Kansas. when you have louisiana idiots voting for representatives promising to give teachers a payraise with lotto/casino/oil/disaster/fill-in-the-blank money and then at the last second say "whoops! we don't have enough to pay our teachers, oh woe is us!" and then STILL VOTE THESE ASSHATS IN FOR ANOTHER TERM

and that's not even including the fact that louisiana is at the bottom of the list for *everything*. :p

This is great news. This means there will always be people to clean my house and make my fast food.

"This means there will always be people to clean my house and make my fast food."

You need not worry about that as long as immigration remains ignored by the government. It's not Kansans doing that work these days....

This is great news. This means there will always be people to clean my house and make my fast food.

send them to new orleans, you can get thousands in bonuses at fast food restaurants there. they're begging people to come to work. and many aren't. esp. when you have a new trailer, fema cards, red cross cards, welfare and who knows what kind of aid.
