A US House of Representatives Resolution effectively requiring a naval blockade on Iran seems fast tracked for passage, gaining co-sponsors at a remarkable speed, but experts say the measures called for in the resolutions amount to an act of war.

H.CON.RES 362 calls on the president to stop all shipments of refined petroleum products from reaching Iran. It also "demands" that the President impose "stringent inspection requirements on all persons, vehicles, ships, planes, trains and cargo entering or departing Iran."

Analysts say that this would require a US naval blockade in the Strait of Hormuz.

Since its introduction three weeks ago, the resolution has attracted 146 cosponsors. Forty-three members added their names to the bill in the past two days.

In the Senate, a sister resolution S.RES 580 has gained co-sponsors with similar speed. The Senate measure was introduced by Indiana Democrat Evan Bayh on June 2. In little more than a week’s time, it has accrued 19 co-sponsors.

This continuing escalation is absolutely surreal.

So we are going to basically commit an act of war against Iran... What good ideas will they come up with next?

Guess what...

http://www.haaretz.com/hasen/spages/985421.html

Prime Minister Ehud Olmert has proposed in discussions with the speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives, Nancy Pelosi, that a naval blockade be imposed on Iran as one of several ways to pressure Iran into stopping its uranium enrichment program.

Now we know where that Idea came from... our masters in Israel!

Oh and how its denied....

Pelosi denies Olmert proposed U.S. blockade of Iran

Text of the Bill:

http://www.opencongress.org/bill/110-hc362/text

(3) demands that the President initiate an international effort to immediately and dramatically increase the economic, political, and diplomatic pressure on Iran to verifiably suspend its nuclear enrichment activities by, inter alia, prohibiting the export to Iran of all refined petroleum products; imposing stringent inspection requirements on all persons, vehicles, ships, planes, trains, and cargo entering or departing Iran; and prohibiting the international movement of all Iranian officials not involved in negotiating the suspension of Iran's nuclear program; and
(4) urges the President to lead a sustained, serious, and forceful effort at regional diplomacy to support the legitimate governments in the region against Iranian efforts to destabilize them, to reassure our friends and allies that the United States supports them in their resistance to Iranian efforts at hegemony, and to make clear to the Government of Iran that the United States will protect America's vital national security interests in the Middle East.

It better not pass.

I guess I never realized how potentially biased Pelosi is, when it comes to Jewish issues (http://www.clevelandjewishnews.com/articles/2006/11/10/news/world/aapelosi1110.txt), until today.

Are there any elected politicians who would consider a naval blockade on France? Great Britain? Japan? Russia? Why not, as they are all sovereign nations the same as Iran?

This is nothing more than an attempt to escalate the situation before the November elections, and that ditz Pelosi has bought into it hook, line and sinker. She has really done a disservice to women seeking high political office, with her pathetic performance as Speaker of the House. I had held much higher expectations.

I anticipate that if we were to engage in such action, the Iraqi leadership would give us our eviction notice and the United nations would offer full support to both the Iraqi and Iranian peoples. Sanctions are already in place, with tougher ones being proposed by the EU and U.S. A naval blockade is a unilateral action that will be opposed, and cost us more allies and standing.

C'mon, Kucinich, get those Impeachment articles of yours moving.

I don't know.. those are some scary co-sponsors of that Senate resolution. Now it doesnt carry the language of the House bill, but if it was sent up to test the winds, those Senators represent the people in each party that get a lot of shit done.

I don't know why my wife wants another kid. Here we are bringing another kid into this fucked up world in October. By the time both of my kids are adults, there will be nothing left for them.

What the f**k?!
Why does it seem like our politicians want to fight everyone these days?

Pelosi is a retard and you're right very biased. If we go to war with Iran I will blame her completely.

Umm...seems to me there's a couple assholes in the White House that are just as guilty.

Having taken impeachment "off the table", she is largely responsible for the executive branch continuing to act with impunity.

Ailwon

Impeachment was never "on the table" with the slight advantage Demos had in the congress.

So I say again, she may be as guilty in this as those assholes in the White House....but not more. It's like saying an accessory to murder is more guilty than the murderer himself..fact is they are both guilty.

Maybe you're right. It probably doesn't help my perspective that I've never liked her from the start.

I just see her having not only the ability, but the responsibility to uphold this key aspect of our checks and balances. When she so emphatically communicates her intent to let the executive branch get away with anything they want, one of the most basic foundations of our system of government is no longer functional.

Only problem with getting rid of Pelosi is she represents the most outthere liberal district in our country.

Her replacement would be just as unbalanced.

Sanchek

A replacement wouldn't automatically be speaker though.

Ailwon
06-20-2008, 02:05 PM
Well maybe she's perfect.....

With her there the Demos will never gain too much power as she will surely sway enough independents to stay away from the Demos. :)

Kelraz Bladesinger

Her same constituents are those who would never want to go to war with Iran, though. It really boggles the mind. Bi-partisan politics that would go against the will of the majority of the population.

I want to hear Obama's stance on this. Hell, I'd love to hear what Saudi Arabia and China and the EU think and what they'll do.

Haloface

'Hell, I'd love to hear what Saudi Arabia and China and the EU think and what they'll do.'

- We're very pro-sanctions, but nothing else. The EU foreign commissioner (see Jedd's thread) is trying to come to some sort of packages deal. The EU would never go to war - but what individual member states will do is not clear. Of course if America fights, Britain undoubtedly will. The 'Special Relationship' still means more to us than our EU role, amazingly.

Kelraz Bladesinger
06-20-2008, 03:09 PM
Well the rest of the EU hates you and would kick your ass if you didn't have a giant moat around your country. But for us ... you speak English and you're white, so we love ya!

You want to know why things like this are done by Pelosi and 95% of those who supposedly represent us in Washington?

Most ethical Congress ever

We need such an overhaul of how our politicians are paid, and receive monies from outside sources it's not even funny.
