Possibly the best game since Morrowind?
I remember when I first posted on Morrowind when it was released, and the popularity of the game on these boards prompted an entire new section.
So I ask, how goddamn cool is this game? 'Cause I'm having a bloody blast.

I have no idea how good the game is, it's incredibly laggy on my system and I have to play it in 800 x 600. Of course I'm still raiding in eq so that's a good 4-5 hours yesterday that I didn't get to play Oblivion. So far, I liked Morrowind much more than Oblivion at the same stage of the game in which I am.

'The last one was one of the most boring and clunky game's I've played in years. But I keep hearing lots about this one, is it changed enough for me to check out?'
- Yeah, it has.
It has definately dealt with some huge issues from the Morrowind.
And the gaming world.. talk about infinite. If you can see snowy peaks in the distance, even if it takes you an hour, you bet that you can get to the top.
Dungeons, cities, landscapes, it's all breath-taking.
The combat has had an overhaul which makes it feel more like you're in control, which is something I found lacking in Morrowind. Spells are king, and have a bigger part to play. Work's kept me busy, so haven't had too much gaming time on it. But it sure as hell is the best single player game I've played this side of a year.
No main quest for me, nop, it's rogue adventuring, all the way baby! A thousand side quests, and quite rewarding, definately challenging.
I heard it's particularly fun on an Xbox 360, anyone confirm?

Oblivion is georgeous. I preferred the menus in Morrowind, but damn the graphics in Oblivion are amazing. Of course, I just bought a 7800 so I could run the thing over 640 x 480...
I found that it took a good bit of tweaking even with a decent system and fairly high-end gfx card. Tweaking the nvidia settings directly was the best. Now the frame rate is quite good and the views are just stunning.
Still love me some Morrowind, tho.

I don't think xbox 360 can have anything on the PC version of the game, simply because PC can be modded to add all kinds of depth. The only thing that I could think of is that no matter what you're guarenteed smooth running, I'd imagine. At least, that was the way it was with Morrowind for me. I had it on the xbox and the PC (got the PC later with the release of Tribunal and Bloodmoon) and my PC was a bit inferior to the specs, and it showed. Xbox there was no such problem.

Sorry Fan, but it's true!
The coolest thing is, you'll never know what you'll find at the top. Maybe a few trees, maybe a desolate peak, but maybe a dungeon, or a city-fortress, or a cluster of huts with a few NPC's and some pretty cool merchants or quests you would otherwise never have seen.
Think of Morrowind, and double the size of the game-world. It's pretty breath-taking. Now excuse me, 2hrs before I have to pick my gf up, precious time left!!

Oh this game is wonderful...../drool THere is a great Nvidia tweak out there. If you OC your cards at all you are familure with programs like Coolbits NVtweak and Rivatuner. Well in the hidden Nvidia optiosn there is a adjustment to render frames ahead. Set that to 0 or 1 over the default 3 and it opens up a ton of FPS... great tweak.

I watched a guy play this at a video game store yesterday. I have to say that I'm actually not that impressed by the graphics. I'd still play it if I had a chance to, but seeing as I have neither a computer nor an xbox360 (nor a tv for that matter) I will have to go without.

Me and a pal has been playing this pretty much non stop since the release of it.. i play it on 360 and at first it felt really laggy and choppy but that was until i found out my HD was pretty much full and really fragmented to fix that all you have to do is restart the Xbox and keep "A" pressed down until you see the bethesta startscreen.. poof.. hd defragmented and no more laggy menus..
the game is stunningly beutiful and the feel for it is true to the series.. the open non linear style that we have loved since the days of arena and daggerfall..
we made a rogue type class.. an acrobat to be precise, after 15h played and still lev 1 we joined the thief guild and started our carreer as the elderscrolls version of Garret..
the first few missions were easy as hell.. but pretty soon they became insanely hard..
and that seems to be the story in this game.. while morrowind was easy enough for a semi blind monkey with diarrea to play this will present a challenge to everyone.. and caster IS ACTUALLY playable since mana regenerates.. no more need for cheats or a cart full of mana potions.. and fast travel.. many hate it and thinks it ruins the game but i love it.. having to run for 20mins to get back to town just to speak with some yahoo for a quest update just isnt fun..
since i got this game in my hands i havent been able to even start my Everquest 2 account.. it just dont call me anymore.. perhaps in a few weeks.. or.. anyone want a EQ2 account?
back to breaking the law in imperial city.. over and out...

'Actually I am more pissed off at not being able to find any vendor heal potions, anyone know what town to get some?'
- Facing Rindir's Staffs in the Market district, there's a few magic shops. The one on the left sells potions, I believe.
I've had a few problems with crashing, but go to the official forums, their technical section is brilliant. Go to page 7 and there's an unnofficial FAQ thread, with all the fixes and tricks you need to run it well, or at all.
Picture me, I have a p4 1.9ghz radeon 9800 with just 600mb of ram.
And I play this pretty well on 640 res. I even have full distance view :devil I'm not saying it's completely smooth, but, ya know, nothing beats the sun-sets and snowy peaks.
I've been so side-tracked with little quests, killing the fishes for the guy in the cottage just outside the Imperial City (an amazing water-breathing ring, permanent is the reward), helping the merchants in the Market district with the guy underselling them, and getting 100gold and a great attribute ring and sword in the process, and finding the Imperial Grey Prince's homeland in some city about 2hrs walking distance from the Imprerial City...it's all been major fun. Spent hours and hours on those few quests.
Now I'm back in the City and thinking about joining the mage guild. Went to their island thingy but couldn't gain access, does anyone know where I can find the local mage guild leaders for recruitment? Looked pretty much everywhere.
Enjoying this game more than anything right now. For the Imperial Grey Prince quest, I set off through the most amazing country-side and valleys, there's a hundred dungeons, npc's, and side-quests on the way.
Oh, and won 3 fights in the arena. My "fame" on the character panel is 2. Oh yeah, I'm the man.

Went to forums, read things about level scaling... and I decided to drop the game. In RPG games, you shouldnt have a world scaling to your level. Thats nonsense.

Yes, the scaling blows. I'm hoping modders can make it more reasonable, but I expect that to be more complex than simply neatening the UI.
Still a fantastic and beautiful game.

I don't understand what is meant by scaling?
Cloudwalker21
03-31-2006, 02:01 PM
As you level up, the monsters around you level up with you so each area you go to the monsters you're fighting will be challenging still (thats the theory anyways). As opposed to a system like EQ's where the mobs are statically leveled with a small range of variation.
Thormir
03-31-2006, 04:00 PM
The argument against it (at least one) goes something like this: Early in my career I go to a dungeon. It's tough. I kill the first mob or two, but further in they are just too strong -- no can do. So I leave, vowing to return one day to avenge...myself, really. I leave, level up a few times, collect some goodies and return. That dungeon is still a challenge, but now the tables are turned. I am the victor and may revel in my accomplishment. Huzzah!
But Oblvion isn't like that. Every dungeon and the vast majority of NPCs are your level (give or take, depending on where the Difficulty slider is set). Thus, people can become Arena grandmasters at level 1, be arch-mage of the guild by level 3, and finish the overarching quest at level 6. I'd have at least preferred that some important targets scale only have a certain level. As it stands, I can see how this set up will water down in game accomplishments.
Still a great game, and mods will improve it.
Osgiliath666
03-31-2006, 08:20 PM
We each like different things. Level scaleing? Brilliant. I prefer a tough challenge. I have had to comeback after maybe getting different equipment or different spell sets but I have always been able to beat any dungeon/gate so far. You are really dis-servicing your self to quit the game because it is too hard. Great stuff. Don't quit.
Lanilya
04-01-2006, 02:48 PM
The Level scale is brilliant for side-quests. But for the main quest, its advantageous NOT to level. Hell - you will become Arena champion at lvl 1? And kill the endboss at lvl 3?
The level scaling shouldnt disappear - that allows player created mods to be played by everyone. But the main questline should have fixed level dungeons imho.
And yes, I have set the game aside, and hope for a patch :) I want an RPG, and with level scale, this isnt (for me) a real RPG.
Anyway, happy hunting for those who enjoy :) (I play(ed) a nightblade).

With Morrowind, you could level up without seeing a monster if you had the money to do so. There were trainers that could take you all the way up to 100 in a skill (some required a certain rank in a faction). Heck, you could even find a way around that, if you had a fortify to take a skill that was at 100 over it, you could train that skill indefinitely (at least on the xbox version) and level up as much as you wanted to.

I just picked this up - it sounds good so far, I haven't played that much into it. What I will say is that the minimum specs on the box really are the minimum specs if even that, my poor computer is crawling along with a 128mb video card, 1 gig ram, and a P4 3.0ghz processor. The minimum says 512 ram, I can't even imagine trying to run it on that.
There are some great tweaks on the various forum sites, but each of those is slowly degrading my game visually, and half the fun of an RPG like this is the eye candy. I'd probably want to save the emperor more if he didn't look like a pasty white blob.
I guess I'll have to suffer and upgrade now.:D

I admit it, my first character was a mangina. 8(
Been playing for a few days now.... I am terrible at close combat as a Night Blade.... any suggestions?
I basically kite everything like in EQ.....
I am having fun though with the side quests...
Funny thing happend though... my kids played Morrowind for a long while. Yesterday after they were playing O for a while I got back on and they had turned on an invicibility code. I cleared the ship out Anvil and got my first magic weapon. I thought that the ghosts were "illusions" trying to trick me and I was disbelieving them or something.
Anyway, I have been purposely avoiding the main quest by doing side quests and smaller dungeons.
I like it so far. I run it with all the highest graphic stuff... really nice...
When I make my next character it will probably be a pure Barbarian..... I wanna hack stuff more.
Okay, I am having fun now.... I finally set myself up with the proper magic gear and have been able to make and regenerate mana at a much faster rate.... which lets me cast my pet and actually kill stuff. :)
I am just now starting the main quest. I am the leader of several guilds and arena champion... the side quests have proved fun and challenging. :)

I loved Oblivion, but when you focus on the main quest, it takes about a day, which was always most dissapointing about the game.
And though people say you can continue in side quests, it always feels quite.. useless to do so.
Still, a top game. Glad you're having fun.
So after I finish this one, what would you guys suggest I find for my next endevour?
I am glad I did mostly side quests first. It gave me the feeling of having multiple story lines going on at one time and having to deal with several issues while the main quest line hung over my head.

Purely accidental but things work out some times.

How about those mods like knights of the nine and other premium mods? Worth donloading / installing?
Since I have a better videocard (1950 Pro) I started to enjoy the game. The world leveling with you is very bad, but I have to revide my previous post, its not totally destroying the game. One can still enjoy the character progression.
Trolls regeneration is deadly :)
