Whod'ya think will win it?

Currently 25min in extra time with Portugal and England. The lovely Swiss ref has denied us a perfectly fine goal. So while it should be 3 - 2 to England, it's 2 - 2 and likely penalties in 5mins.

2 goals within 10mins.

I'm thinking Portugal in penalties, unfortunately. And France will win over-all.

But of course, I hope England. We're just shit in penalties though. 2min left of Extra Time.

See ya.

Ricardo > England.

My bet is, Sweden lose to Holland. France wins over Greece, Czeh beats Denmark, then France...

so Holland - Czeh Final. And...Czeh wins. in the end.

Did ever Beckham scored a penalty?

Haloface
06-25-2004, 12:05 AM
I dunno.
He kicked that one about 50 feet over the bar. That penalty spot was bloody dodgy though, everyone was having problems with it.
Not saying it lost us the match.
The stupid fucking swiss ref.. he lost us the match.

' Soccer.'

- Aye, where you hit a ball with your foot: football.

Frankly, I don't understand how you guys can get so worked up over a borefest like soccer.

Step up from cricket I guess.

Haloface
07-05-2004, 12:25 PM
Yes.

It's so boring compared to American "football" where you strap on 80 pounds of protection just to play rugby.
Or hey... it pales in comparison to "baseball", which is just rounders with extremely stupid outfits.
Or basketball, perhaps? Which, well, appears to be exactly the same as netball for girls.

Rock on, Pax Americana! Yahoo! Etc etc.

Ibudin

If rugby is so rough and your Euro players are so tough..why dont they come and try to net a spot on the ole NFL. I mean if its just a walk in the park your big, mean, rugby players shouldnt have a problem putting on some pads to earn 1+ million..for a shaby player?

Ah thats right..they would get eaten alive. You start showing me 300+ pound rugby players who can put up 500+ pound benches and run a 4 40 and well talk.

Im with the poster...Soccer = boring as hell.

I've played rugby and Football ( American) and while rugby is indeed painful it pales in comparison to the all out aspect of American Football.

Takes the brains of a newt to use an exuse of leather for all out warfare eh mate?

Are you like 11?

Though while I'm not quite 11, the All Blacks would tear you panzy Yanks apart.

"Frankly, I don't understand how you guys can get so worked up over a borefest like soccer."

It's, by far the most popular team spectator sport in the world...and universal. Almost every country in the world plays it at some level. That's why they get so "worked up".

It's understandable you get bored watching soccer Cristo, you've never played it at a high level. I don't mean this as a knock, I have the same problem with baseball, car racing, and basketball (though I'm an avid spectator of American Football and Hockey, though I've never played either at a high level). I recently went to a MLS soccer game and enjoyed evey second...watching the runs away from the ball, good passes, amazing footwork, some great saves, disecting the moronic officiating...and the single goal. My kids and wife enjoyed the local area mascot soccer game, the dog frisbee catching and the fireworks......and barely noticed the soccer in between. It's one of those sports that you need a greater knowledge of to enjoy completely.

Soledorin - Please find me a 300lb+, Bench press 500+ player that runs better then a 4.7; 40 dash...PLEASE!! ;)

Taild -

edit note - added "team" to most popular sport claim...had recently read an article that racing was actually the most watched...gofigya.

Ibudin

I was off on the 4 40 remark hehe. Anyways a quick search of NFL players and Bench press/40 yard dash will result in many who are 290-325 putting up 500 pound benches (which is huge..400 used to be the mark to make) and not to mention squats/cleans in the high mark and still hit a 4.9-5.0 40 yard dash.

Bottom line is, its a retarded arguement. People watch what they like and to say one is better than the other isnt going to change anyones opionion. I am actually an advid fan of Boxing, Wrestling (college and Olympic..not that fake shit), UFC, some racing mostly MotoX, some winter sports more so than anything else.

Glad you guys like to watch Soccer..its pretty popular with the kids these days in the US. Rugby has its nitche to but never heard of All Black Rugby team till halo mentioned it and when I did a search they look like a bunch of nuts. Would be interesting match up of All Star NFL team against them with out pads.

It's understandable you get bored watching soccer Cristo, you've never played it at a high level.

What's a "high" level?

Do people have to play it professionally before they can stand to watch 90 minutes with 3 scores? I was never a pro football player, but I can watch it and not be bored. I was never a pro basketball player either, but it doesn't bore me either.

There are quite a few sports that I just don't care one way or the other to watch, but soccer...it's just boring.

Fancy footwork?

Figure skating has fancy footwork.

It bores me too.

Cristo please read and comprehend what I said...

I didn't say all sports need to be played at a high level ( and what I mean is a high level of involvement....i.e. it was your number one sport, and played it a considerable amount). I said soccer in particular was that way...I played competitively for 20 years and continue to coach. It's just an observation I have made...at least here in the states. If I look at co-workers and friends, almost without fail, those that have played or coaoched (high involvement) enjoy watching it...those that haven't find it too slow and boring.

For me, baseball, basketball and racing are sports I find slow and boring...they are sports that, IMO, need a higher level of involvement to appreciate. Not making a value judgement, just stating my opinion. It just so happens that of all team sports in the world, soccer, or properly, football, has the highest level of inolvement from players and fans....thus why it is so well followed and watched with such passion.

The reason for that is the same reason for putting up with shitty movies and tv shows - they just don't know there is better out there.

Just as an example, friends of my family visited here from their home in England a year or so ago and happened to see Alien on tv - the original one, you know from 1979 - anyway, they were amazed. "The things they can do in movies these days". To put it another way: Germany's obsession with Hasslehof.

It's the same thing with sports, and why soccer is so popular.

Soccer is about tactics, teamplay and individual techniques. A good game can be amazing, it is like spectating some tactic/strategy gm between teams.

When weaker teams r playing it can be boring. And even of teams arent bad a match can be boring, unfortunately saw many examples for this during the EuroCup 2004. To be honest was the worst soccer-championship ever.

Great, glad I could brighten your day Cristo!

Here's a hint for you Cristo...just because you don't enjoy something that hundred of millions of people do....doesn't make them deprived. Soccer popularity also has to do with it's accessibility. It's a sport that can be played with any cheap ball and a couple rocks to make goals in any dirt area. It's the most played sport there is.

British family visit Crist0's house -> British family see movie and think it cutting edge -> Movie over 20 years old -> British not know what they missing -> This explain why British like soccer

I'm sorry Ailwon, but I seem to have missed it..which threads have you made any sort of point whatsoever in? Better yet which threads have you ever proved any of my points wrong?

What's that?

None?

Unless you create a thread...yes. Takes a while to get through to you. ;)

Back to the thread:

A question to those Europeans that followed the Euro Cup. What's the feeling about a team that isn't generally thought of as a football powerhouse winning the Euro Cup?

It doesn't get much coverage here in the states, but I had heard that Greece has been playing a style that makes weaker teams competitive with higher skilled teams. What was said was essentially they sit back with 10 men playing defensively and just try quick counter attcks for their offense. Haven't gotten to see a Greece game as yet...do they indeed play this style? ..if so, how do you feel about this style? Someone here equated it to the clutch and grab trap play in the NHL right now...slow the game down, a lot of grabbing and commiting of penalties (in the NHL they don't call it :D )...does Greece play that way?

Winterworg
07-14-2004, 12:20 PM
In other words... you'll go off the topic to make smart ass degrading comments and claims that you don't back up, but not to back yourself up.

Ailwon
07-14-2004, 12:54 PM
No Winter, I made a joke regarding not being able to recoginze when Cristo was being sarcastic because of the low quality and hopeless points he tries to make and back up...meant to be sarcastic like his original, it's over your head comment. Hence why I put the smiley after. He then said, when have you ever disproved one of my points?

smart ass degrading comments
I then made it personal...and I apologized. If he (or you ,Winter) can't accept that, there's nothing I can do. Can I back it up...yes, I had prepared something, then I read it and decided that this was turning into a bitch fest between Cristo and myself...and way off the topic and spirit of the thread. I told him I'm willing to pursue this little bitch fest in a so named thread, so those that couldn't give a shit, which I bet is most people that visit the board, could ignore it.

We messed up this thread, which I happen to have had some interest, I have apologized for my part.

Actaully I posted it....then decided the path we were heading wasn't good, nor was it what I intended. I didn't want a personal bitch session, I edited it out and apologized.

Take that post and make a thread yourself if you'd like - I didn't challenge myself to back up what you were saying after all.
True enough...I was being saracastic when I said it, then pushed it into a personal birch session with you. I could start a thread and we could continue to bicker back and forth on who made what point, but I don't see the value to it. It would be a tremendous waste of both of our time and a pretty much usless thread. That is why I offered to participate it you wanted...I didn't see the value. Of course, by this time this thread is useless and we probably harped as much about not pursuing as we would pursuing it.:)

Going to start a new soccer thread now :(
