As for the gallery itself I like quite a few of the photos. Others didnt capture me in the same way but thats kinda the nature of art.

The one titled "Hope" with the dog in the bars was one of my favorites.

Taino, simply put, your narcissism combined with your attitude on these boards to the general masses that read them aren't going to be your most favorable critics. If I was on TV proclaiming that I hate black people and that we should ship them all to Africa, then naturally I won't hang out in Harlem trying to befriend everyone and asking "Y teh U haet meh?"

Your photography on a professional level I will say isn't too great though. Especially the recurrent theme of blurring out all but a single image. The self photos are lacking in substance (no pun intended) with each photograph you should try and tell a story through your picture, thats what makes it art. That's the difference between a picture of me at Sea World waving at Shamu and Ansel Adams.

Instead of black and white, try using tint colors to express emotion, since it appears you are using a digital camera and running the photos through a computer altering program.

Don't get butt-hurt by anything I'm saying, it's not like that. You'll only become good through experience so keep at it, regardless of how good/bad you and others think your work is.

You confuse narcism with the simple fact that I do not at all times have a willing model standing around in my appartment when I take pictures. I take pictures of myself to get better at photography because it is a rather rare hapening that I do have a model with me that is here for a photoshooting, althou it happens, rarely. When you want to take pictures of people, portraits and want to get better, then you have to
1. have 10 models in your appartment at all times so you can practise all the time or
2. have a wife that is at all times willing to play model for you or
3. take pictures of yourself, again and again...


And someone with a little bit of taste and brain would be able to make a difference between what I say on this forum and my pictures. You know there are people that are able to say things like "hey, I dislike him, he's an asshole, but his pictures aren't bad".

Well I could care less bout the US vs Euro content on the boards but I will give props to taino for his pics.

To answer your questoin taino. I don't personally like self portraits as a complete ameture photorapher, I enjoy most Scenery shots or Native shots (aka like your life on the streets photo's) For me they are just more fun to shoot and to view. Self portraits or Portraits of say individual models just don't seem to catch as much about life as do more broad landscapes.

Call it personal taste, nothing wrong with your self portraits but as a viewer I liked your Street life photo's and your night time shots the best.

Thanks for the feedback Kahla. I agree with you. All the different series have their own beauty (or not), their own style. Some like this more, some others. I know people that like my selfportraits the most.
As a photographer without a big name, you must be able to take pictures of everything. Once you are good, you have a name, you are known, then you can specialize yourself to this or that. However, portraits are what most photographers do for a living. Everyone likes good pictures form themselves or the ones they love. To make a living out of "scenery" or "streelife" pics, you must be damn lucky.
So in order to learn everyhting and at one point hopefully master all different kind of pictures, I take shots of everything and as mentioned, not having amodel around all the time, I capture myself.

Taino you know I'm a fan and I love your work. I've told you a few times I think ;) I'm also suprised this topic wasn't brought up much sooner, lol. Btw honey you still have to email me that picture I wanted - the one you took off your site.. :D *hugs*

After all Shew, Art is still in the eye of the beholder.
It is a perfectly acceptable judgement if you say "I really odn't like your stuff". Because if this is the way you feel, this is it. Noone is able to create art that everyone likes. For me as a wanna be artist, it is important to find out what most people like, because this is the only way to create things that will also give me a future. But at the end, you always also have to do what you like and love.
There IS good and bad photography.
But there are thousands of perfectly "good" pictures that I really don't like a lot. And this is how it should be.
I am gathering feedback because I want to get it. Becuase feedback helps me to improve. And feedback like "i really like this and that and you are a good photographer" helps just as much as "I don't like it at all, especially this and that sucks".
One thing is flattering, one thing isn't. But it brings me forward.

I came across your gallery a while back after I wanted to see what your flowingthought.com domain was about. While I really like the other shots, I think most people have a problem with the self portraits because they seem to convey a forced tone. It seems like you're struggling to come up with shots that show the "serious, brooding" artist within you and don't reflect a true emotional state. I do commend you for posting that stuff, knowing people would eventually bring it here to flame you.

The camera work is very good. I didnt care much for the self portraits only because of the,for lack of a better term,harshness of the angles. Im not saying they arent good,im saying that they arent my style.

I will in no way "just do what people like to see". In no way at all. This is not how I work.
However, it is still useless to try to live from doing somehting that brings absolutely no money.
The goal is to find a way to combine doing what I love with what people actually will spend money for. I need to know what kind of pictures people like. But, the only pictures I offer are ones I love to take anyways. So I will do what I love and the way I love and then I will see what pictures people like the most. Its not just a "do what people love" thing. But "what people love" is usually also the best work, quality wise.

Even if I end up taking pictures of "people on the street" for the rest of my life, I will still have to take "photoshooting portraits" if this the one thing how I can earn a living, if you get my point. But, I will never let other people force me into doing somehting I don't like at all. At the moment I am there, I don't like my job a lot, and this is why I work on photography, to change that :)

Its a digital camera, so no film.

Looked at gallery.. I liked 2 of the pictures alot.. the 2 in street life with the old men. One with the pair on the bench and the other the guy with the bottle of spring water.
Very Rembrant-ish in taking interest in the ordinary and overlooked.
Dont like pictures of when people pose though or know they are being photographed.

Many of those pics are very good. While lookng through, I found I liked the "Scenery" gallery and the "Night" gallery the most.

We ordered a print and it took about 2 weeks shipping. The price of the picture was withdrawn from our CC about 1 week after we ordered and I suggest going for the 9,95$ shipping to make sure you get that picture in tip top shape..

Taino does a great job as a starting artist and I hope to see more work from him :)

The site is 100% secure. You must register with your name and CC info, but you will never recieve any spam mail or "eMail notifications" other then the shipping status of your order. I tested it all and its a highly trusted site. In fact I payed money to have my store there. This is where they make cash. Not from eMail spam. You will never ever recieve anything form this site other then shipping status and notifications about your order(s).

The prices I ask are exactly the prices for a) printing and b) shipping. I do at this point not earn a dime.

If you wish to order one of the pictures in my gallieries that I did not offer a print version yet, please let me know. It takes me a few hours to prepare a print, but I can make a print version out of 95% of those pictures. Size differs between 3x5inches till like 30x50 inches. I am more then willing to prepare a print version just for you, if you want. To have someone interested in buying my art is worth much more to me then any money I get from it (right now, at one point I'll ask money so I can live from it.. but not yet, I'm not good enough).

At any rate. I skipped the nekkid Taino photogs and checked out some of the other ones, and I'd have to say that those are some pretty damn good shots. Very good work, keep at it...you seem to have a good eye.
