I'm not sure if the punishment truly fits the crime. In my opinion a lengthy prison sentence might be worse than blindness. At less you can make a salad verse having to toss a salad.
Maybe if we had this kind of sentencing in the US crime rates would drop.
http://www.cnn.com/2009/WORLD/meast/02/19/acid.attack.victim/index.html
"Late last year, an Iranian court gave Bahrami what she asked for. It sentenced Movahedi to be blinded with drops of acid in each eye. This month, the courts rejected Movahedi's appeal.
Bahrami's lawyer, Sarrafi, said the sentencing might be carried out in a matter of weeks. He said he doesn't think Bahrami will change her mind. Neither does Bahrami."

Hell yea... that fucker deserves it.(Just hope he is actually guilty, otherwise it would suck)
Prison > Blindness... At least you get out some day and can still see.

Yah I wouldn't worry about him being guilty. The Iranians are known for their human rights and fair trials.

I'm just wondering how acid fits into a Fundamentalist Islamic's arsenal. Do they just have this stuff laying around?
And doesn't this religion predate acid? What did they use before acid was discovered? Sand?

Btw, I don't condone such tactics.
While I do support the death penalty , if we can prove without a doubt they are guilty, I do not support this level of cruelty.
I'd much rather wall off some large island and airdrop such ilk in...dropping in supplies now and again.
Tired of what we have going on here in the US with the prison system failing due to overcrowding and such.

I would support the death penalty in this case...but not torture...which blinding him with acid would be.

I didn't see that this had anything to do with religion, it was more about the courts allowing the victim to set the punishment.

JESUS SAID TURN THE OTHER CHEEK!
It's really hard for me to disagree with the sentence. It is utterly inhumane to purposefully blind someone, but fuck if it doesn't appeal to my sense of justice.
And while his crime was horrible, I would not give this person the death penalty (I am against it anyways, but it makes much more sense in capital murder cases). Put his ass to work in a labor camp until he dies a broken man.

Do you oppose the death penalty for humane reasons? That it is cruel and unusual punishment? Or for what reason?
I don't know why, but every time I see people talk about the death penalty, there are 1 or 2 people who oppose it for humane reasons. They then finish their argument with "plus its better if they suffer more in prison" haha.

I'm all for the death penalty. In the cheapest way possible. Some people just serve no purpose in society, and will not rehabilitate. No reason to keep them around. I actually think life in prison is cruel and unusual. It's a crime against nature/humanity.

A three judge panel a few weeks ago said they need to release 30,000 - 50,000 inmates because the crowding was too hard on the inmates. I guess society would be better off with 50,000 inmates on the street.
Agreed. I wish California would just execute everyone on death row and those serving life sentences. Would fix the problem.
And maybe start deporting people.

I refer you to the HBO movie, "Citizen X".
When evidence was irrefutable, and a confession provided, justice was swift.
(I highly recommend the movie, as a really well done story with a great cast)

It depends. If the money spent on the "war on drugs" and all the legal issues regarding it, and instead spent on education and giving the underprivileged a chance at a legitimate tax paying career we'd see dividends in 5-10 years. There is no reason to lock up all of our minorities with their "crack" additions while just slapping hands on wrists for cocaine use. That would vacate over 50,000 inmates and turn them into tax paying citizens, to boot.

I don't believe in slapping the wrists of cocaine users. I believe crack and cocaine should be equal punishment.
I just don't know how many of those 50,000 inmates are just users who will then later become tax paying citizens. I have always believed rehabilitation in the most cases does not work. In my opinion you can change a good chunk of people, but still the majority probably will be repeat offenders, and often escalate over time.
Just my 2 cents though.

Education is available however it's easy to be a thug than to work at school.

If we spent the money from the war on drugs on bigger walls for our borders, barb wire and gun turrets.
We would be left with the pot growers in northern cal. and the meth labs in the mid west.
legalize, tax and edumacate.

God I wish.
I use to oppose legalization, but then I decided it would be fun to watch companies like Altria get into the business and then hire blackwater (now Xe) as their muscle.
Oh, and taxing the drugs to high heaven would net some serious revenue.

Speaking of for profit prisons ... there have been some allegations of political or other questionable detainees getting harvested in China, much to the benefit of lots of people in the process (although clearly not the prisoner).

Heh, most of those organs wouldn't be fit for use. Years of drug/alcohol abuse, various diseases, ect would make most, if not all unusable.
Sanchek

Not sure that's a good assumption. Besides, I think just about anyone's going to take an organ in fair condition if they have one that's failing.

Lethal injection would automatically make all of the organs unusuable, as would gas chambers, and electrocution. Hanging would probably make a comeback, as would the guillotine. Unless you are avocating the bullet-in-the-head method....

Lethal injection does not make the organs unusable. The Chinese are apparently switching from bullets to that, specifically for that reason.

Even a bullet in the body causes hydrostatic shock throughout the body and therefore a risk to cause damage.

Actually Sanchek you'd be surprised at how picky they are over organs. Here anyways in China they'd prolly use a tin can and some string to replace your kidney.
