Twitter and Facebook are the most retarded fads yet on the Internet...soon to fade out and once again be replaced by tried and true discussion forums.
I've deleted my Facebook profile and ended my "experiment"
Malse, feel free to break this off as a new topic titled: Twitter vs Facebook - Which is more retarded?

That's what they used to say about instant messaging. I wouldn't count on it.
edit: Also, without Twitter, I would've have found this:

I would because Twitter and Facebook have no bounds. They are essentialy sites that bring together networks of people who one really doesn't want talking to each other.
I don't remember IM being something that was not supposed to gain in favor...my first experiences were with ICQ which I nicknamed "The exceptionally convenient virus transfer system"

The "get off my lawn" crowd decried it, predictably. You didn't notice the Hmong kids moving in next door on your interwebtubes, did you?

What I think is Facebook is better left to its original market and intent. Truly, it is a trend that will no doubt come to an end much like most trendy things do on the Internet.

I never heard that...I've been doing this since late '94 early '95. The thing that never got off the ground with online shopping were these local sites that tried to become online malls.

Um?
Twitter and Facebook are the most retarded fads yet on the Internet...soon to fade out and once again be replaced by tried and true discussion forums.
Anyway. The thing about Twitter and Facebook is that those people weren't seriously using forums to begin with. They don't solve the same problem.
If anything, most forums are the anti-Facebook. How bizarre is it to have a bunch of people running around communicating under video game pseudonyms, for example? That's not at all what an average Facebook user is looking for.
I wouldn't bet on Facebook's profitability, but it would be insane to bet against its continued popularity/growth.

It's growth is more media driven than anything...like MySpace was. Having 10 million registered users is just that, keyword is registered but not necessarily using.
As far as saying it would be replaced by message boards my eloquence came shining through but I trust you knew my meaning. Facebook is a fad...no real way to generate real income and a poor platform to market a business on.

So what is your point? You aren't saying anything different than CNN and the rest of the media is saying. So Facebook has alot of users and 100,000,000 login at least once a day...and in the future that number will eventually become less and less and at some point all of the venture capital pumped in will dry up, the investors will say..."but it had alot of users how could it be declining" and at some point someone will say...because it went from a college networking site to a site that the over 50 crowd jumped on to see what their highschool friends look like and all the nerds will look like a million dollars and all of the jocks will be fat and bald and the hot chicks faces will look like their made of leather and the goody two shoes girls will look like playmates.
Then everyone will get sick of it and come to the realization that they truly don't care that much to read someones 200 character or less comment or to see pictures of their kids or the vacation at the jersey shore.
And all of the businesses that flock there to sell their products or services will come to realize that people arent at facebook to shop they are there because of the above reasons and all of the time and money they spent on their facebook marketing plan was for nothing because it totally ignored one extremely important reason that online shopping did become the norm and wasn't a fad...and from there I think you can figure it out!

I've found Facebook ads to perform very well, in terms of conversions. The demographic targeting is especially great.

In general our search conversions hover around 30% for retail sites. I can't see facebook coming close to that. But I guess that depends on what you're selling.

I understand the profile marketing what I'm saying is how do you get a 30% or better conversion rate on sales vs click throughs, in particular to someone who is logging into a place to socialize and not necessarily shop? How do you convert someone to buy when they are not shopping at the time? The CPC model at best is around 2% and that is term targeted.
Sanchek
04-28-2009, 12:57 PM
Use the same ads, targeted at the proper demographic. They will perform better.
What are you considering search? Sponsored or organic results?

We work within organic results as far as search engines. I don't market or advertise my company anymore and have'nt done so for years. Our workload can be overwhelming as it is right now and along with the new business we are relaunching new designs and upgrades of current customers sites.
Most of our work is involved with online retail, due to 50+ years of collective experience with online retail along with our extensive advertising, merchandising and marketing experience.
The most current large job we are working on is an industry specific auction site that we took from our idea to selling it to an established company. We'll see how that works for them it will also be a good measure of organic vs CPC vs traditional demographic marketing.
That site was my intended purpose of watching the facebook marketing...so if once it is live...you might have a referral especially with a 30% sales conversion rate.

I don't see Twitter lasting. Facebook, on the other hand, seems to have reached critical mass--it's rather astonishing that I can pick some random person I knew in high school or college, and have it almost guaranteed that they have a profile. Heck I just searched for the one high school dropout I knew, and _he_ even had a profile.
(Just tried a search for people that graduated from my high school in the same year as I did. Facebook returned 146 profiles. We had a class of about 175...)

The vast majority of my 'friends' on Facebook are people from my high school that I could care less about talking too, but it has been a boon for planning a reunion this summer.
I still prefer myspace to facebook, but only because I listen to an assload of bands on myspace while at work.
Twitter, I just don't get. Why do I give a fuck if some joe schmoe or even a star had a granola bar for breakfast?

Well, it's led to me calling up and catching up with a bunch of old friends. This is helpful as I'm considering moving back to Indiana if my current situation turns into Medical retirement. It'll be much cheaper to live there on what Uncle Sam will give me monthly as opposed to living in Utah.

Facebook has allowed me to stay in contact and keep up with friends in a way that would otherwise be impossible. A large portion of my friends and acquaintances in South America are all on Facebook (most from internet centers and what not), and I can keep up with and in touch with them as part of my daily internet routine. Not to mention of course the usual elementary/middle/high school friends/teachers, friends from other places I've lived.
Plus although I'm originally from the East Coast/Southeast, I'm attending university here in Utah which, naturally, is a long way from home, and Facebook once again allows me to seem a lot closer.

Three years ago on my way to Michigan I stopped in Gary for gas and some chicken wings. It looked absolutely devastated then, with storefronts boarded up and an overall sense of defeat. I know Indiana has been suffering a huge unemployment figure overall, so with less revenue from working people paying taxes, how much are they having to cut services?
I guess what I am driving at is are you making sure to do plenty of research on the area you are going to relocate to, if you make that decision?
And to keep from being a complete derail, I have only used Facebook once to try to track down an old friend.

Though you don't want to mistakenly paint a broad brush over the entire state of Indiana based upon an experience in the armpit of Chicago. Indiana's economy sucks, yes (at least outside of Indianapolis and various college towns), but Gary (and the near east side of Indianapolis) is just about the only place in Indiana remotely that bad.
Indianapolis is the most affordable city in the US over a million people. If Fandros is going to be on disability, there's no better place for him to live on a fixed income especially considering his familial ties to the area.
Keep in mind I hate Indiana. I was forced to move there when I was 10, and I spent the next 18 years trying to get the hell away from there. It's not a 'bad' place to live though. I just didn't care for it.

Aye I wouldn't live in Gary Indiana if you paid me 100k a year. That place has always been the butt end of jokes amongst native Hoosiers.
I'd settle outside of Fort Wayne more than likely and near one of the lake communities. Cheap and quiet and , as my son likes to point out, quite fitting for my hermit side.
Far enough away from family down in Madison county to keep them out of my day to day affairs but close enough to drive down and visit ;P

http://www.pcworld.com/businesscenter/article/164107/twitter_quitters_just_dont_get_it.html
In my opinion, the most commonly heard complaints about Twitter stem from a misunderstanding of it. Chief among these complaints is the utterly bunk assertion that it's just a whole bunch of people heralding the trivial events of their daily lives into the void. (i.e., "I'm going to the bathroom now!" or "Eating a yummy ham sandwich!") Frankly, if that's how you're using Twitter, you're doing it wrong, and you should stop without subjecting your friends to a full week of that rubbish, let alone a full month.
Another prevailing myth about Twitter is that it's just an expression of our collective narcissism, and that we're all just tweeting to hear ourselves tweet. In reality, though, the overwhelming majority of users follow far more people than follow them. And if you're tweeting more than you're reading, there's a good chance nobody's following you.
These misconceptions about Twitter persist largely among those who've either never tried the service, or who tried it for a week or so, didn't get it, and quit. Chances are good that most of these try-and-fly users are guilty of exactly the kind of inane, self-absorbed blather that they complain so vociferously about. It's nothing to be ashamed of, mind you. It seems like most newbs on the site go through that initial clueless period before finally getting it and joining the larger dialog.
