Howdy folks
Well, still can't get into Darkfall (game keeps selling out everytime I try to buy). But I did just get into the Fallen Earth beta.
http://www.fallenearth.com/
It still needs work, at least a years worth if you ask me, though the devs have said that the game will be ready when...well....it's ready. I hope they stick to that.
To all you Fallout fans, rejoice! Yes, this has a Fallout feel to it. The corners are still sharp but for the most part I felt like I was truly in a Fallout MMO.
The graphics are pretty decent given that it's an indy effort, and the cut scenes at the beginning are pretty cool.
It is level based, but no classes (ala Fallout). The controls do take a little getting used to as instead of the turn based combat of fallout, it's more FPSish. While walking around in MMORPG mode, the controls are very similar to WoW (WASD, Right mouse button to look around, left mouse button to walk or select), but by pressing Tab, it goes into what I'll call Counter-strike mode.
It takes a little getting used to, but I have to admit it's pretty neat. Suddenly your mouse goes into free look mode (WASD stays the same), and your left and right mouse buttons are for firing your weapons. If you are carrying an assault rifle or a two handed weapon, the left button will suffice, but if you happen to have more than one pistol, or you want to mix up a 1 handed melee with a pistol, then each button controls each weapon. VERY cool when you get the hang of it.
As you level (max lvl of 45), you assign points to various stats and skills. Keep in mind, once selected, the decision is permanent, so choose wisely.
Character customization at the beginning is very detailed, even for a beta (right down to the piercing you want in your right eye brow, yes that selective).
Vehicles are in the game, though I've yet to purchase one. You get to ride a quad in the opening portion of the game.
It's still a big laggy, and there are still some bugs there, but I would assume that this is due to code yet to be fix coupled with the diagnostic software running in the background.
If you get the chance to get into beta, it might be the fresh air that you need, at least until Darkfall becomes more available or at least until Mortal Online starts passing out beta keys.
