yeah I know this isnt how the international community feels but evidently there are people out there that feel this way.

not supporting a war is fine with me but no matter where people are in need you should be willing to help out anyway you can. Hell if they were setting up donations for the iraq people who were affected by the US war I would donate to that cause even.

That guy was an idiot. I am Canadian and completely against your war in Iraq, but a human life is still a life, regardless of the country it comes from or what your views are on their politicians. And i highly support donations that goes to help for your disaster at this moment.

I skimmed the thread when this was first posted, and I'm replying to it now sometime later, so if I'm hazy on the details, forgive me. SOE doesn't seem to want me to read their forums right now.

I'm all for giving money for the relief effort - I should state that right off. In fact, my wife and I are sending a check, and my students are mobilizing to do what fundraising they can.

BUT - from what I remember, that poster did have a fair point. The feds decide where they want money to go, and it is a little odd to put all this funding into other areas, then cry for help in the face of a disaster - especially as it now sounds like preventative measures that were called for in 2001 might have helped avoid this tragedy in the first place. While it isn't as simple as calling for a withdrawl from Iraq to save money to put into hurricane damage, we are a very wealthy nation, and should have been capable of handling this much better than we have.

On the other hand, I suppose it is a donation, and one is welcome to do with their money as they choose. I think someone in that thread even said that.

I'm glad to see other countries sending support, as well as individuals. Organizations like the Red Cross rely on that money. But just think what they could do if the US Government were to realistically fund them for a disaster like this.

So punish those that need the help because there government fails to spend our money wisely.. Great. Got it. Thanks.

There ya go, that's exactly what I said. Go back and read the second paragraph, that wasn't my point at all.

There's a sad lesson in what's going on - our government failed to heed warnings and failed to offer timely support, and after the fact left it to foreign and domestic donations to help supply the needed aid through a volunteer organization. At no time did I suggest help should be withheld.
